In vitro ACE-1 inhibitory peptides were characterised previously from a number of microalgal species including (peptide IAPG), (peptides FDL, AFL, VVPPA), (peptide YMGLDLK), (peptides IW and LW) and indeed (peptides GMNNLTP and LEQ). The isolation of protein from using a combination of ammonium salt precipitation and xylanase treatment of resulting biomass combined with molecular weight cut off filtration to produce a permeate and characterisation of bioactive peptides is described. The Angiotensin-1-converting enzyme (ACE-1) IC value for the generated permeate fraction was 370 µg/mL.

The most frequently used method to harvest microalgae on an industrial scale is centrifugation, although this has very high energy costs. To reduce these costs, a continuous electrocoagulation process for harvesting Chlorella vulgaris was developed and tested using a pilot-scale 111 L working volume device consisting of an electrolyser with iron electrodes, aggregation channel and lamellar settler. The flow rate of the microalgal suspension through the device was 240 L/h.

Article Synopsis
  • Centrifugation is a common but costly method for harvesting microalgae like Chlorella vulgaris due to high energy consumption.
  • Researchers tested electrocoagulation with iron electrodes and found it can achieve over 95% harvesting efficiency while meeting food safety standards for iron content.
  • Using electrocoagulation before centrifugation significantly reduced energy costs to 0.136 kWh/kg of dry biomass, making it a more economical alternative.

Mercury is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant of dominantly anthropogenic origin. A critical concern for human health is the introduction of mercury to the food chain; therefore, monitoring of mercury levels in agricultural soil is essential. Unfortunately, the total mercury content is not sufficiently informative as mercury can be present in different forms with variable bioavailability.
