Widespread, convenient access to COVID-19 testing has been challenging in the United States. We make a case for provisioning COVID-19 tests through the United States Postal Service (USPS) facilities and demonstrate a simple method for selecting locations to improve access. We provide quantitative evidence that even a subset of USPS facilities could provide broad access, particularly in remote and at-risk communities with limited access to health care.

Article Synopsis
  • - Rapid diagnostic testing for COVID-19 is crucial for effective social distancing and managing disease spread, but many US communities still lack adequate testing access.
  • - Research shows that if COVID-19 testing were available at all US pharmacies, about 94% of the population would be willing to travel for it, but different regions have varying needs for testing locations.
  • - Using a facility location optimization model, it’s found that strategically selecting pharmacies for testing can greatly increase access, potentially reaching 29 million more people compared to just choosing based on population density.
