Prevalence and patterns of neuropathic pain in people with chronic post-surgical pain after total knee arthroplasty.

Aims: The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence and patterns of neuropathic pain over one year in a cohort of patients with chronic post-surgical pain at three months following total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Methods: Between 2016 and 2019, 363 patients with troublesome pain, defined as a score of ≤ 14 on the Oxford Knee Score pain subscale, three months after TKA from eight UK NHS hospitals, were recruited into the Support and Treatment After Replacement (STAR) clinical trial. Self-reported neuropathic pain and postoperative pain was assessed at three, nine, and 15 months after surgery using the painDETECT and Douleur Neuropathique 4 (DN4) questionnaires collected by postal survey.

The economic impact of surgically treated peri-prosthetic hip fractures on a university teaching hospital in Wales 7.5-year study.

The number of total hip replacements taking place across the UK continues to grow. In an ageing population, with people placing greater demands on their prostheses, the number of peri-prosthetic fractures is increasing. We studied the economic impact this has on a large teaching hospital.

Is clopidogrel stopped prior to hip fracture surgery--A survey of current practice in the United Kingdom.

Background: Clopidogrel is an anti-platelet agent which causes an increase in bleeding time. An increasing number of patients presenting with an acute femoral neck fracture take clopidogrel in combination with other anti-platelet agents as regular prescription medication. Such patients may be at higher risk of increased peri-operative bleeding.

The St. Leger total knee replacement. A false economy?

We reviewed the outcome of 53 primary St. Leger total knee replacement (TKR) implanted into 47 patients over a 2-year period from March 1995 and compared the outcome with age and sex matched controls with the Kinemax Plus TKR. All operations were performed to treat osteoarthritis of the knee.
