Circadian clocks control immunity and virus replication, as well as pharmacokinetics and efficacy therapeutics. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent of these relationships by measuring circadian gene expression in primary human-derived dermal fibroblast cultures (HDF) after remdesivir exposure. In the current study, we analysed circadian gene expression in a cohort of participants without a neuropsychiatric diagnosis.

Introduction: Whipple's disease (WD) can mimic chronic inflammatory rheumatism leading to incorrect prescription of tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFI). Several complicated cases of WD have been reported during TNFI treatment which is strongly suspected to modify the host-pathogen relationship. Tropheryma whipplei asymptomatic carriage is high in the general population, making the diagnosis of WD more difficult face to unexplained arthritis.

Background: The skin-sparing effect of megavoltage-photon beams in radiotherapy (RT) reduces the target coverage of superficial tumours. Consequently, a bolus is widely used to enhance the target coverage for superficial targets. This study evaluates a three-dimensional (3D)-printed customized bolus for a very irregular surface, the outer ear.

The main obstacle to bottom ash (BA) being used as a recycling aggregate is the content of salts and potential toxic elements (PTEs), concentrated in a layer that coats BA particles. This work presents a dry treatment for the removal of salts and PTEs from BA particles. Two pilot-scale abrasion units (with/without the removal of the fine particles) were fed with different BA samples.

Human dirofilariosis is a clinical entity caused by infection with nematode species of the genus Dirofilaria. The traditional picture depicts the disease as a sporadic event associated with the presence of a single immature worm causing a nodular lesion. With the aim to reassess this paradigm, establishing a more accurate picture of the disease and homogenize criteria, a scoping review was conducted by searching, screening and analysing published clinical cases of human dirofilariosis worldwide during the 21st century.

Adverse local tissue reactions (ALTRs) are a prominent cause of hip implant failure. ALTRs are characterized by aseptic necrosis and leukocyte infiltration of synovial tissue. The prevalence of ALTRs in hips with failing metal implants, with highest rates occurring in patients with metal-on-metal articulations, suggests a role for CoCrMo corrosion in ALTR formation.

Article Synopsis
  • This text discusses a study evaluating the safety and effectiveness of the oral drug fexinidazole for treating early stages of human African trypanosomiasis (g-HAT), which typically requires more invasive procedures like lumbar punctures and intravenous therapy.
  • The study involved recruiting patients from eight treatment centers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, focusing on those with stage 1 or early stage 2 g-HAT who met specific health criteria, while excluding those with severe health issues or contraindications.
  • The goal of the research is to make treatment more accessible and less burdensome for patients in rural areas affected by this disease, highlighting the potential of fexinidazole as a convenient oral treatment option.

The circadian rhythm is essential for the interaction of all living organisms with their environments. Several processes, such as thermoregulation, metabolism, cognition and memory, are regulated by the internal clock. Disturbances in the circadian rhythm have been shown to lead to the development of neuropsychiatric disorders, including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The purpose of the present study was to determine clinical and radiographic outcomes in patients treated with limited-open retrograde intramedullary headless screw fixation for metacarpal neck and shaft fractures (group I) versus percutaneous antegrade and retrograde intramedullary double pinning linked by a connector (group II). We designed a retrospective comparative study, with the inclusion of two groups (20 patients each) of metacarpal unstable fractures. Both groups showed similar outcomes at the final follow-up, except for extension lag (significantly better in group II) and return to sport (significantly better in group I).

Objective: Microtia is a congenital auricular malformation, often part of a syndromic form (35%-55% of cases). The accurate prevalence of associated malformations remains to be determined with regard to the heterogeneous results of the previous studies. This study aims to describe in a large population cohort the abnormalities associated with microtia and to determine the most suitable assessment for these children.

Background: Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare type of aggressive lymphoma of the central nervous system. Treatment strategies improved significantly over the past decades differ regionally but mainly consist of rituximab and high-dosed methotrexate (MTX)-based therapies.

Methods: We assessed clinical outcomes of 100 patients with newly diagnosed PCNSL between 2010-2020 at the University Hospital of Cologne, Germany.

The potential consequences of the COVID-19 outbreak are multifarious and remain largely unknown. Deaths as a direct result of the condition are already in the millions, and the number of indirect deaths is likely to be even higher. Pre-existing historical inequalities are compounded by the virus, driving increased rates of infection and deaths amongst people who use drugs and alcohol, those belonging to racial-ethnic minority groups, poorer communities, LBGTQ+ populations, healthcare workers, and other members of the care economy; all of whom are already at increased risk of adverse mental health effects.

Introduction: The current new SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has had a profound impact on medical practice. The objective was to analyse the ethical questions raised by the French ENT community during the first wave of COVID-19 infections.

Methods: Four open-ended questions concerning ethical considerations in ENT were sent out in April 2020: (i) difficulties to care for COVID-19 positive patients; (ii) impact of the health crisis on COVID-19 negative patients; (iii) communication within the healthcare teams and with hospital staff; and (iv) management of information by the press, or national ENT societies.

Background: In low-income and middle-income countries, affordable direct-acting antivirals are urgently needed to treat hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. The combination of ravidasvir, a pangenotypic non-structural protein 5A (NS5A) inhibitor, and sofosbuvir has shown efficacy and safety in patients with chronic HCV genotype 4 infection. STORM-C-1 trial aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of ravidasvir plus sofosbuvir in a diverse population of adults chronically infected with HCV.

Purpose: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a frequent, quality-of-life (QOL) impairing disease in pediatrics. The SN-5 is a reliable, sensitive and reproductible QOL questionnaire, validated in English for evaluation of CRS disease-specific QOL in children. This study aims to adapt and validate the French version of this test.

X-ray-activated near-infrared luminescent nanoparticles are considered as new alternative optical probes due to being free of autofluorescence, while both their excitation and emission possess a high penetration efficacy . Herein, we report silicon carbide quantum dot sensitization of trivalent chromium-doped zinc gallate nanoparticles with enhanced near-infrared emission upon X-ray and UV-vis light excitation. We have found that a ZnGaO shell is formed around the SiC nanoparticles during seeded hydrothermal growth, and SiC increases the emission efficiency up to 1 order of magnitude due to band alignment that channels the excited electrons to the chromium ion.

A general method to carry out the fluorination of metal oxides with poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE, Teflon) waste by spark plasma sintering (SPS) on a minute scale with Teflon is reported. The potential of this new approach is highlighted by the following results. i) The tantalum oxyfluorides Ta O F and TaO F are obtained from plastic scrap without using toxic or caustic chemicals for fluorination.

The chikungunya virus (CHIKV) originated from Africa and has spread worldwide. Since 2017, multiple chikungunya outbreaks have been reported in the Horn of Africa, without molecular characterization. In November 2019, an autochthonous acute chikungunya infection was diagnosed in a French patient living in Djibouti, marking the re-emergence of the virus in the country.
