Speckle Strain Analysis of Left Ventricular Dysfunction in Paediatric Patients with Bicuspid Aortic Valve-A Pilot Study.

Background/objectives: Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a prevalent congenital heart defect that continues to present a significant challenge in the management of paediatric patients. The assessment of left ventricle systolic function is typically conducted through the measurement of the left ventricular ejection fraction. Currently, left ventricle global longitudinal strain (LV GLS) is regarded as a more sensitive indicator, enabling the quantitative assessment of global and segmental ventricular function through the determination of myocardial deformation.

Histidine-Tryptophan-Ketoglutarate Cardioplegia Yields Different Results in Aortic Valve Surgery Depending on Patient Gender: A Pilot Study.

Background: Histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) cardioplegia induces cardiac arrest through membrane hyperpolarization. Aortic valve pathology leads to pathophysiological changes in left ventricular vascularization that may prevent adequate cardioplegic distribution. The objective of the study was to ascertain whether the use of Bretschneider cardioplegia in aortic valve surgery yields different outcomes for male and female patients.

RAF-1 Mutation Associated with a Risk for Ventricular Arrhythmias in a Child with Noonan Syndrome and Cardiovascular Pathology.

Introduction: Noonan syndrome (NS) is a dominant autosomal disease, caused by mutations in genes involved in cell differentiation, growth and senescence, one of them being RAF1 mutation. Congenital heart disease may influence the prognosis of the disease.

Case Presentation: We report a case of an 18 month-old female patient who presented to our institute at the age of 2 months when she was diagnosed with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, pulmonary infundibular and pulmonary valve stenosis, a small atrial septal defect and extrasystolic arrhythmia.

Implantation of Covered Stent for Coarctation of the Aorta and Secondary Hypertension in Adolescents-Case Report.

Introduction: Coarctation of the aorta represents a narrowing of the thoracic aorta. Hypertensive patients with blood pressure differences ≥20 millimetres of mercury have an indication for surgical or interventional treatment. Implantation of a covered stent became the preferred therapy for the management of this pathology in adolescents/adults.
