Background: Clinical decision-making regarding diagnosis and management largely depends on comparison with healthy or 'normal' values. Physiotherapists and researchers therefore need access to robust patient-centred outcome measures and appropriate reference values. However there is a lack of high-quality reference data for many clinical measures.

Synthesis of novel tetrahydrobenzazepine derivatives and their cytoprotective effect on human lymphocytes.

Cytoprotective compounds such as amifostine play an important role in chemo- and radiotherapy due to their ability to reduce the side effects of these treatments. Our work was initiated with the intention to design, synthesise and test a new class of heterocyclic compounds that would have an antioxidative profile with the potential to be further developed as cytoprotective agents. The design was based on the privileged tetrahydrobenzazepine scaffold found in many natural products with a wide range of biological properties.

Exercise for osteoarthritis of the knee.

Background: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a major public health issue because it causes chronic pain, reduces physical function and diminishes quality of life. Ageing of the population and increased global prevalence of obesity are anticipated to dramatically increase the prevalence of knee OA and its associated impairments. No cure for knee OA is known, but exercise therapy is among the dominant non-pharmacological interventions recommended by international guidelines.

Optimisation of isolation procedure for pyrrolizidine alkaloids from Rindera umbellata Bunge.

Procedure for isolation of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) from Rindera umbellata Bunge plant species was optimised. Different extraction media (methanol, ethanol and sulphuric acid), concentration and volume of sulphuric acid, pH of PA solution for alkaline extraction, extraction time and techniques (maceration, ultrasonic and overhead rotary mixer assisted extraction) were investigated. The yields of six PAs (7-angeloyl heliotridane, 7-angeloyl heliotridine, lindelofine, 7-angeloyl rinderine, punctanecine and heliosupine) were monitored by GC-MS/FID.

Do exercises used in injury prevention programmes modify cutting task biomechanics? A systematic review with meta-analysis.

Objective: Some injury prevention programmes aim to reduce the risk of ACL rupture. Although the most common athletic task leading to ACL rupture is cutting, there is currently no consensus on how injury prevention programmes influence cutting task biomechanics. To systematically review and synthesise the scientific literature regarding the influence of injury prevention programme exercises on cutting task biomechanics.

Determinants of MSK health and disability: lifestyle determinants of symptomatic osteoarthritis.

It is frequently considered that, for many people, symptomatic osteoarthritis involving the lower limb joints is a largely preventable 'lifestyle disease'. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the most recent scientific evidence examining the effect of various lifestyle factors, such as physical activity, obesity, diet, smoking, alcohol and injury, on the development of symptomatic knee or hip osteoarthritis. The strengths and weaknesses of various studies are discussed, the magnitude of any demonstrated risks presented and current overall conclusions drawn.

HSF-1-mediated cytoskeletal integrity determines thermotolerance and life span.

The conserved heat shock transcription factor-1 (HSF-1) is essential to cellular stress resistance and life-span determination. The canonical function of HSF-1 is to regulate a network of genes encoding molecular chaperones that protect proteins from damage caused by extrinsic environmental stress or intrinsic age-related deterioration. In Caenorhabditis elegans, we engineered a modified HSF-1 strain that increased stress resistance and longevity without enhanced chaperone induction.

A transcriptional mechanism integrating inputs from extracellular signals to activate hippocampal stem cells.

The activity of adult stem cells is regulated by signals emanating from the surrounding tissue. Many niche signals have been identified, but it is unclear how they influence the choice of stem cells to remain quiescent or divide. Here we show that when stem cells of the adult hippocampus receive activating signals, they first induce the expression of the transcription factor Ascl1 and only subsequently exit quiescence.

Association of KIBRA rs17070145 polymorphism with episodic memory in the early stages of a human neurodevelopmental disorder.

A common T/C polymorphism within the ninth intron of the KIBRA gene (rs17070145) is thought to influence memory in humans. Since cognitive impairment, including memory, is a core feature of schizophrenia, we attempted to investigate this association in an independent sample of adolescent patients with early-onset schizophrenia (EOS; onset before age 18) probands and their healthy siblings. In a sample of 25 pairs of EOS proband-healthy full sibling, we sought to investigate the association of KIBRA with memory performance.

Multidimensional optimization of signal space distance parameters in WLAN positioning.

Accurate indoor localization of mobile users is one of the challenging problems of the last decade. Besides delivering high speed Internet, Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) can be used as an effective indoor positioning system, being competitive both in terms of accuracy and cost. Among the localization algorithms, nearest neighbor fingerprinting algorithms based on Received Signal Strength (RSS) parameter have been extensively studied as an inexpensive solution for delivering indoor Location Based Services (LBS).

Occupational exposures to blood and body fluids among health care workers at university hospitals.

Introduction: Occupational exposure to blood and body fluids is a serious concern of health care workers and presents a major risk of transmission of infections such as human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV).

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and circumstances of occupational blood and body fluid exposures among health care workers.

Methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted in three university hospitals in Belgrade.

Survival and neonatal morbidity among extremely preterm born infants in relation to gestational age based on the last menstrual period or ultrasonographic examination.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the potential impact of gestational age (GA) estimation on the basis of the last menstrual period (LMP) in comparison with GA based on ultrasound examination on rates of survival and neonatal morbidity among extremely preterm infants.

Methods: The Swedish national registry of infants born extremely preterm (Extremely Preterm Infants in Sweden Study), including infants born before 27 weeks of gestation, was used to identify 645 infants with available information. Incidences of stillbirth, survival, small for GA (SGA), and major neonatal morbidity were calculated in relationship to the GA estimated by each of the approaches.

Proteostasis and aging of stem cells.

The accumulation of misfolded or damaged proteins is an important determinant of the aging process. Mechanisms that promote the homeostasis of the proteome, or proteostasis, can slow aging and decrease the incidence of age-related diseases. Adult stem cell function declines during the aging process of an organism.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids and fatty acids from the endemic plant species Rindera umbellata and the effect of lindelofine-N-oxide on tubulin polymerization.

The examination of the aerial parts, roots, and seeds of the endemic plant Rindera umbellata is reported in this paper for the first time. Phytochemical investigation of R. umbellata led to the isolation and characterization of ten pyrrolizidine alkaloids and eleven fatty acids in the form of triglycerides.

Severe road traffic injuries and youth: a 4-year analysis for the city of Belgrade.

The objective of this study is to describe severe road traffic injuries (RTIs) in the population under 18 years in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. We analysed both severe non-fatal and fatal RTIs in children and adolescents under 18 years old in the Belgrade area, during the period 2008-2011. Data sources were the official statistics of the Public Health Institute in Belgrade and forensic-medical records from two paediatric university hospitals and five university hospitals for adults.

Altering foot progression angle in people with medial knee osteoarthritis: the effects of varying toe-in and toe-out angles are mediated by pain and malalignment.

Objectives: To evaluate if altering the foot progression angle (FPA) by varying magnitudes during gait alters the external knee adduction moment (KAM), knee flexion moment (KFM), knee extension moment (KEM) and/or symptoms in people with medial knee osteoarthritis (OA). Potential influence of pain and knee malalignment on load-modifying effects of FPA was investigated.

Design: Participants (n = 22) underwent 3-dimensional gait analysis to measure KAM peaks, KAM impulse, KFM and KEM peaks.

Stimulative influence of germination and growth of maize seedlings originating from aged seeds by 2,4-D potencies.

Background: The 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) is using as a growth regulator in tissue culture media. Maize seeds have poor ability to maintain germination rate in the long term.

Objective: To examine the possible restorative effect of homeopathic 2,4-D potencies on maize seedlings originating from seeds damaged by accelerated aging.

Factitious proteinuria - the most dominant feature in a young female patient with Munchausen syndrome.

Munchausen syndrome is a factitious disorder with predominantly physical signs and symptoms, resulting from the patient's high motivation for assuming a sick role, without any external incentives or boundaries. We report the case of a young female patient with factitious proteinuria in the nephrotic range and a fairly eventful medical history. After performing many expensive and unnecessary investigations and procedures,the real origin of the proteinuria was determined;it was found to be caused by the patient carefully adding calibrated egg albumin to her urine samples.

Medial arch supports do not significantly alter the knee adduction moment in people with knee osteoarthritis.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the immediate effects of medial arch supports on indices of medial knee joint load (the peak external knee adduction moment (KAM) and knee adduction angular (KAA) impulse) and knee pain during walking in people with medial knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Design: Twenty-one people with medial compartment OA underwent gait analysis in standardised athletic shoes wearing (1) no medial arch supports and (2) prefabricated medial arch supports, in random order. Outcomes were the first and second peaks in the external KAM, the KAA impulse and severity of knee pain during testing.

Knowledge and attitudes towards tuberculosis in non medical students University of Belgrade.

Background: Population's knowledge on tuberculosis (TB) is crucial in early seeking of medical care. Delay in diagnosis for any reason contributes to advanced forms and TB transmission in the community. Knowledge about TB in general population of Serbia is poor, including vulnerable groups.

Toxin-antitoxin (TA) modules are small operons associated with stress response of bacteria. F-plasmid CcdB(F) was the first TA toxin for which its target, gyrase, was identified. Plasmidic and chromosomal CcdBs belong to distinct families.

Trunk lean gait modification and knee joint load in people with medial knee osteoarthritis: the effect of varying trunk lean angles.

Objective: To evaluate whether increased lateral trunk lean toward the symptomatic lower extremity during gait in people with medial knee osteoarthritis (OA) immediately alters symptoms or medial knee load, as measured by the external knee adduction moment (KAM).

Methods: Participants with medial knee OA (n = 22) underwent 3-dimensional gait analysis to measure KAM peaks (early and late stance) and KAM impulse. Following the analysis of natural gait, participants were trained to lean their trunk toward the symptomatic leg during ipsilateral stance over 3 randomly ordered conditions (6°, 9°, and 12° lean).

Evaluation of a cognitive remediation therapy group for adolescents with anorexia nervosa: pilot study.

Objective: Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) has been used with adults with anorexia nervosa (AN) in individual and group formats; however, evaluation of CRT with adolescents in this population is very limited.

Method: Seven CRT groups were carried out with a total of 30 adolescents with AN. Adolescents' cognitive flexibility and motivation was assessed before and after the group, and they completed qualitative questionnaires after the group to determine their perceptions.

The effect of cognitive behavior therapy on decision making in adolescents who self-harm: a pilot study.

Research shows poor decision making in adolescents who self-harm and a positive correlation between decision-making abilities and duration since last self-harm episode. This exploratory study investigated whether decision making in self-harming adolescents could be improved through treatment with a novel cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). It also investigated whether improvement in decision making following treatment was linked to self-harm cessation.
