Disruption of cell membranes is a fundamental host defense response found in virtually all forms of life. The molecular mechanisms vary but generally lead to energetically favored circular nanopores. Here, we report an elaborate fractal rupture pattern induced by a single side-chain mutation in ultrashort (8-11-mers) helical peptides, which otherwise form transmembrane pores.

Membrane Binding of Antimicrobial Peptides Is Modulated by Lipid Charge Modification.

Peptide interactions with lipid bilayers play a key role in a range of biological processes and depend on electrostatic interactions between charged amino acids and lipid headgroups. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) initiate the killing of bacteria by binding to and destabilizing their membranes. The multiple peptide resistance factor (MprF) provides a defense mechanism for bacteria against a broad range of AMPs.

Aim: To report the change in visual acuity and central macular thickness (CMT) following treatment with intravitreal aflibercept injections in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) with suboptimum response to ranibizumab.

The impact of personalisation on people from Chinese backgrounds: qualitative accounts of social care experience.

The limited research that considers people from black and minority ethnic communities' experiences of personalisation tends to focus on personal budgets rather than personalisation per se. This article provides an opportunity to hear the voices of people from Chinese backgrounds and their experiences of personalisation. The study used individual semi-structured interviews and focus groups to collect data from physically disabled people from Chinese backgrounds who lived in England, were aged between 18 and 70, and received social care.

One of society's most vulnerable groups? A systematically conducted literature review exploring the vulnerability of deafblind people.

The vulnerability of deafblind people is considered axiomatic; they are seen not only as a vulnerable group but also as one of the most vulnerable. This paper aims to synthesise existing knowledge to determine what is known about such vulnerability. A comprehensive literature search was undertaken between April 2013 and May 2014.

A safety audit of the first 10 000 intravitreal ranibizumab injections performed by nurse practitioners.

Purpose: To evaluate the safety of a nurse practitioner (NP)-delivered injection service for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration (wAMD) with ranibizumab.

Methods: An evaluation of medical staffing resources for providing an injection service for wAMD highlighted difficulties covering lists. An alternative strategy of an NP-delivered injection service was evaluated.

Introduction: The use of alpha-1a receptor antagonists (tamsulosin) is widely accepted in the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). It has previously been implicated as a causative agent in intra-operative floppy iris syndrome due to its effects on the smooth muscle. We report a case of lower lid entropion that may be related to a patient commencing treatment of tamsulosin.

A case of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae causing bilateral endogenous endophthalmitis.

This report describes a case of bilateral endogenous endophthalmitis caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, an occupational zoonotic pathogen, which was successfully treated with intravenous penicillin G followed by oral linezolid. This is believed to be the first report of E rhusiopathiae causing endogenous endophthalmitis.

Local anaesthetic cataract surgery: factors influencing perception of pain, anxiety and overall satisfaction.

To assess factors influencing perception of pain, anxiety and overall satisfaction during local anaesthetic cataract surgery an audit was carried out at the West of England Eye Unit. Patients receiving sub-Tenons after previous peribulbar anaesthesia had significantly higher pain scores. Patient satisfaction was significantly higher when a handholder was present in theatre.
