The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has posed a major challenge to global health. The development of fast, accurate, and accessible diagnostic methods is essential in controlling the disease and mitigating its impacts. In this context, electrochemical biosensors present themselves as promising tools for the efficient monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Purpose: To characterize Vanishing White Matter Disease (VWM) cases from a Brazilian University Tertiary hospital, focusing on brain magnetic resonance image (MRI) aspects, clinical and molecular data.

Methods: Medical records and brain MRI of 13 genetically confirmed VWM patients were reviewed. Epidemiological data such as age at symptom onset, gender and main symptoms were analyzed, along with genetic mutations and MRI characteristics, such as the distribution of white matter lesions and atrophy.

This study was designed to characterize the dynamics of infection of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in naïve replacement gilts after introduction to positive systems. Ninety-eight naïve gilts were monitored in three positive commercial farms (A, B, and C). The näive gilts were housed for 21 days in pens adjacently located to older gilt cohorts (named seeders), which have been naturally exposed to the positive farms.

Antineoplastic treatment induces a type of gastrointestinal toxicity known as mucositis. Findings in animal models are usually easily reproducible, and standardized treatment regimens are often used, thus supporting translational science. Essential characteristics of mucositis, including intestinal permeability, inflammation, immune and oxidative responses, and tissue repair mechanisms, can be easily investigated in these models.

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3) viral load and histopathological findings in perinatal piglet tissues and to develop an immunohistochemical method for detecting the virus in lesions. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) cycle threshold (Ct) when amplifying PCV3 DNA and the area of perivascular inflammatory infiltrates in different organs [central nervous system (CNS), lung, heart, liver, spleen, and lymph nodes] were compared. To develop an immunohistochemistry technique, rabbit sera were produced against PCV3-capsid protein peptides selected using bioinformatic analyses.

Article Synopsis
  • * It involved 20 Caucasian participants receiving targeted PBM treatments both intranasally for smell and intraorally for taste, with specific laser settings and treatment sessions.
  • * Results indicated a significant improvement in both olfactory and gustatory functions, but more extensive research with larger groups is needed.

Oropharyngeal candidiasis/candidosis is a common and recurrent opportunistic fungal infection. Fluconazole (FLZ), one of the most used and effective antifungal agents, has been associated with a rise of resistant species in immunocompromised patients undergoing prophylactic therapy. Sulforaphane (SFN), a compound from cruciferous vegetables, is an antimicrobial with yet controversial activities and mechanisms on fungi.

Porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3) has been widely detected worldwide in healthy and sick pigs. Recently its association with clinical disease and reproductive failure has been proven through the detection of intralesional viral mRNA in affected pigs. This study aims to describe the occurrence of PCV3-associated reproductive failure (abortions) in sow herds in southern Brazil.

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a complex pathology characterized by visceral adiposity, insulin resistance, arterial hypertension, and dyslipidaemia. It has become a global epidemic associated with increased consumption of high-calorie, low-fibre food and sedentary habits. Some of its underlying mechanisms have been identified, with hypoadiponectinemia, inflammation and oxidative stress as important factors for MS establishment and progression.

Porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3) is widely distributed worldwide, and its association with clinical disease in pigs has been studied in recent years. This study describes a novel PCV3-associated clinical disease in piglets from Brazil. Since September 2020, we received 48 piglets with large caudally rotated ears, weakness, and dyspnea.

Visceral leishmaniasis is a reemerging neglected tropical disease with limitations for its diagnosis, including low concentration of antibodies in the serum of asymptomatic patients and cross-reactions. In this context, this work proposes an electrochemical immunosensor for the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis in a more sensitive way that is capable of avoiding cross-reaction with Chagas disease (CD). Crude antigens tested in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were methodologically standardized to best engage to the sensor.

Purpose: Optic pathway gliomas represent 5% of pediatric brain tumors and are typically low-grade lesions. Because of their unpredictable clinical course, adequate treatment approaches have been controversial, involving surveillance, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. In this study, we use volumetric imaging to compare evolution of optic chiasmatic-hypothalamic gliomas (OCHG) treated with and without chemotherapy, analyzing tumor volume variation during the overall period.

Background: Denticulate ligaments (DLs) are pial extensions on each side of the spinal cord, comprising about 20 to 21 pairs of fibrous structures connecting the dura mater to the spinal cord. These ligaments are significant anatomical landmarks in the surgical approach to intradural structures. To our knowledge, there is no previous study on the detection of DLs using MRI.

Background: Indoleamine 2, 3-dioxygenase (IDO) is an immunomodulatory molecule that has been implicated in several biological processes. Although IDO has been linked with some renal diseases, its role in renal fibrosis is still unclear. Because IDO may be modulated by TGF-β1, a potent fibrogenic molecule, we hypothesized that IDO could be involved in renal fibrosis, especially acting in the TGF-β1-induced tubular epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT).

Background And Purpose: Hemispheric dysplasia (HD) and hemimegalencephaly (HME) are both brain malformations with early clinical manifestation including developmental delay and intractable epilepsy. Sometimes the differentiation of these conditions is not simple. HME is an anomaly of cortical development caused by a combination of neural proliferation and cell migration dysfunction, showing lobar or hemispheric enlargement.

Unlabelled: X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is a recessive X-linked disorder associated with marked phenotypic variability. Female carriers are commonly thought to be normal or only mildly affected, but their disease still needs to be better described and systematized.

Objectives: To review and systematize the clinical features of heterozygous women followed in a Neurogenetics Clinic.

We evaluated the DTI changes in the deep gray nuclei and dorsal brain stem, which demonstrated abnormal T2 and/or diffusion signal intensity, in 6 patients with infantile spasm treated with vigabatrin compared with 6 age-matched controls. Regions of interest were placed in the globi pallidi, thalami, and dorsal brain stem; FA, trace, D(‖), and D(⊥) were measured. Patients on vigabatrin had significantly lower FA in both globi pallidi (P = .
