Prior infections can provide protection or enhance susceptibility to a subsequent infection through microorganism's interaction or host immunomodulation. Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and Cryptococcus gattii (CG) cause lungs infection, but it is unclear how they interact in vivo. This study aimed to study the effects of the primary SA lung infection on secondary cryptococcosis caused by CG in a murine model.

The aim of this study was to phenotypically and genotypically identify coagulase-negative (CoNS) recovered from the nostrils of waste workers and from dental waste; 135 strains were recovered and was the prevailing species. Genetic similarity (100%) was observed between the two isolated from different employees on the same shift and 85% similarity between the recovered from an employee's nostril and from waste. The gene was found in 20 CoNS, and 20% were also found to possess the gene.

Probiotics form a promising strategy to maintain intestinal health. Milks fermented with probiotic strains, such as the Lactobacillus paracasei ST11, are largely commercialized in Brazil and form a low-cost alternative to probiotic pharmaceutical formulations. In this study, we assessed the probiotic effects of milk fermented by L.

The aim of this study was to characterize resistance aspects of CNS isolated from patients with bloodstream infections acquired in hospitals in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil. Staphylococcus strains were characterized using repetitive sequence-based polymerase chain reaction (rep-PCR) fingerprinting with (GTG) primer.

We studied 245 children (142 H.

Because children are a target group for human vaccination and Th17/T(reg) cells have intrinsically linked and antagonic commitments, we compared the gastric levels of Th17- and T(reg)-associated cytokines of children and adults. IL-6, IL-10 and TGF-β1 levels and Foxp3(+) cell numbers were higher, but IL-1β, IL-17A and IL-23 were lower in infected children than in infected adults.
