Combined Theoretical and Experimental Studies Unravel Multiple Pathways to Convergent Asymmetric Hydrogenation of Enamides.

We present a highly efficient convergent asymmetric hydrogenation of / mixtures of enamides catalyzed by N,P-iridium complexes supported by mechanistic studies. It was found that reduction of the olefinic isomers ( and geometries) produces chiral amides with the same absolute configuration (enantioconvergent hydrogenation). This allowed the hydrogenation of a wide range of / mixtures of trisubstituted enamides with excellent enantioselectivity (up to 99% ).

Stereodivergent Synthesis of Trisubstituted Enamides: Direct Access to Both Pure Geometrical Isomers.

A stereodivergent strategy has been developed to access either ()- or ()-isomers of trisubstituted enamides. Starting from an extensive range of ketones, it was possible to synthesize and isolate the desired pure isomer by switching the reaction conditions. Lewis acid activation enables the formation of the ()-isomers in high stereoselectivity (>90:10) and good yields.

Robotic treatment of giant adrenal myelolipoma: A case report and review of the literature.

Treatment of Anterior Neck Aging without a Submental Approach: Lateral Skin-Platysma Displacement, a New and Proven Technique for Platysma Bands and Skin Laxity.

Background: A high rate of recurrence of anterior platysma bands and anterior skin laxity was reported at the 1-year follow-up of 150 patients who underwent complete neck undermining and full-width platysma transection for neck rejuvenation. The authors propose a new technique-lateral skin-platysma displacement-to treat these two aesthetic problems using only a lateral approach to avoid "opening" the anterior neck. The authors' objective was to compare outcomes following full-width platysma transection technique and lateral skin-platysma displacement technique in terms of patient satisfaction, complications, and long-term effectiveness in the treatment of bands and anterior skin laxity.

Robotic Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection in Advanced Stage Disease.

The Maltese cross technique: umbilical reconstruction after dermolipectomy.

A simple and easy technique for reconstruction of the umbilicus was devised, with emphasis on forming walls of the umbilicus and a depression in a caudal direction. A quite satisfactory result was obtained. A permanent and sufficient depression for the umbilicus can be expected as a result of three-dimensional formation of walls.

Obese and nonobese patients: complications of abdominoplasty.

We analyzed 80 patients who underwent abdominoplasty at the University of Tor Vergata "Policlinico Casilino", Rome to determine the effect of obesity on the incidence of complications after this surgery. The study patients were divided into 3 groups, obese, overweight, and normal weight, based on the degree to which their preoperative weights varied from their ideal body weight. A history of previous bariatric surgery was also analyzed to determine what impact that might have on subsequent abdominoplasty.

Smokers: risks and complications in abdominal dermolipectomy.

Cigarette smoke has many detrimental effects on health, with consequences such as cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, and tumors. Differential effects of recombinant interferon-alpha and 5-fluorouracil against colon cancer cells or against peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Comparative studies on the suppressive effects of recombinant interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha), 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), or IFN-alpha + 5-FU have been performed in vitro on colon carcinoma cells (HT-29 cell line) and PHA-stimulated mononuclear cells (MNC) of peripheral blood obtained from healthy donors. IFN-alpha was used at 500 U/ml against HT-29 cells and at 1000 U/ml against MNC on day 1 of culture; 5-FU was used at 250 microM against HT-29 and at 1400 microM against MNC on day 2 of culture. The results show that: (a) IFN-alpha inhibited MNC and HT-29 cells by 13.

Iatrogenic contact dermatitis to proparacaine: an ophthalmic topical anesthetic.

Allergic contact dermatitis to a topical ophthalmic anesthetic, proparacaine, is reported in a patient with refractory glaucoma. His ophthalmologist routinely used a preparation containing this anesthetic, which is an uncommon sensitizer, for measuring the patient's intraocular pressure. That the patient did not apply the medication himself resulted in added difficulty in discovering the iatrogenically induced contact allergy.
