Objective: Bradykinin (BK) induces differentiation of lung fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, which play an important role in extracellular matrix remodeling in the airways of asthmatic patients. It is unclear whether this process is affected by antiasthma therapies. Here, we evaluated whether a glucocorticoid, budesonide (BUD), and a long-acting β2-agonist, formoterol (FM), either alone or in combination, modified BK-induced lung fibroblast differentiation, and affected the BK-activated intracellular signaling pathways.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of respiratory tract infection in infants and young children throughout the world. Although preterm birth has been considered for years the major risk factor for severe disease and hospitalization, recent findings indicate that prematurity is not a necessary condition, but one of the independent risk factors for severe RSV infection, together with chronic lung diseases, congenital heart disease and immunodeficiency. Furthermore, over 50% of infants hospitalized for RSV infections during the first year of life are healthy, full-term newborns, suggesting that other environmental and individual factors may be involved.

The new research survey "Okkio alla salute", conducted in children in the 3rd year of elementary school, has confermed the worrisome phenomenon of the high number of obese and overweight children. Therefore, it is necessary, also in light of the few available resources, to fight back against this phenomenon that has been demonstrated to be a cause of disabling illnesses in adults. There must therefore be collaboration between Departments of Prevention and Hygiene and Nutrition services (SIAN) to build valid and efficient pathways.

Background: In children with asthma, discrepancies between objective indicators of airway obstruction and symptom perception are often observed. Although visual analogue scale (VAS) has been proposed as a useful tool for assessing accurate symptom perception, previous studies conducted in children with asthma included only small cohorts. A study was therefore designed to investigate the usefulness of VAS in establishing a reliable relationship between breathlessness perception and lung function in a large cohort of children with clinical diagnosis of asthma.

The rise in the frequency of detecting prednisolone in bovine urine from northern Italy has come into focus of attention in recent years. The possibility that neo-formation of prednisolone or that prednisone may occur in urine after collection of samples was therefore investigated. Cow urine collected for official routine controls in Lombardy containing more than 80 ng/ml cortisol, and prednisolone and prednisone below the decision limit (CCα) of the method (0.

Exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) has been associated with bronchial eosinophilia and with airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in mild stable asthma. We previously demonstrated in a large project that allergen exposure is able to raise FeNO and to worsen AHR to bradykinin. We postulated that allergen-induced increase in FeNO could be related to heightened mucosal eosinophils and AHR to bradykinin in atopic asthma.

Background: In analogy with other areas of laboratory diagnostics, the pre-analytical phase is the leading source of variability also in urinalysis. We carried out a multicentric study for comparing results obtained from first-voided and mid-stream urine samples.

Methods: Each of the six hospital-based clinical laboratories participating to this study recruited 50 healthy subjects among laboratory staff and/or their relatives.

Rationale: Strong physical activities are often associated with large lung volumes and relatively reduced flow, which may represent a physiological variant but also an obstructive abnormality. Competitive swimmers have also spirometric values even larger than other athletes, although they are at increased risk for asthma or airway hyperresponsiveness.

Aim: We aimed to investigate whether lung volumes increase with duration of swimming training and are related to an obstructive abnormality associated with airway hyperresponsiveness and asthma-like symptoms.

Background: Coronary stents have evolved over time, from bare-metal stents to drug-eluting stents, and now to bioactive stents.

Aims: We sought to explore the immediate outcome of the titanium-nitride-oxide-coated bioactive stent, Titan2(®), in real-world practice, and the incidence of major cardiac events at follow-up.

Methods: Consecutive patients admitted for percutaneous intervention for at least one significant (≥50%) lesion in a native coronary artery were treated with Titan2(®) stent implantation.

Large cell carcinomas (LCCs) of the lung are heterogeneous and may be of different cell lineages. We analyzed 56 surgically resected lung tumors classified as LCC on the basis of pure morphologic grounds, using a panel of immunophenotypic markers (adenocarcinoma [ADC]-specific, thyroid transcription factor-1, cytokeratin 7, and napsin A; squamous cell carcinoma [SQCC]-specific, p63, cytokeratin 5, desmocollin 3, and Δnp63) and the quantitative analysis of microRNA-205 (microRNA sample score [mRSS]). Based on immunoprofiles 19 (34%) of the cases were reclassified as ADC and 14 (25%) as SQCC; 23 (41%) of the cases were unclassifiable.

Background: Ciclesonide, an inhaled corticosteroid with almost no affinity for the glucocorticoid receptor, is highly effective in downregulating in vitro pro-inflammatory activities of airway parenchymal cells when converted into the active metabolite desisobutyryl-ciclesonide.

Objective: We evaluate whether ciclesonide could effectively downregulate also antigen- or allergen-induced activation of peripheral blood mononuclear cell and of allergen-specific T-cell blasts.

Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated from non atopic and atopic asthmatic children sensitized to Phleum pratense (PhlP5).

The effect of processing on mycotoxin content in milling fractions has been investigated in 10 samples of durum wheat contaminated with T-2 and HT-2 toxins at levels ranging from 97 to 5,954 μg/kg (sum of T-2 and HT-2 toxins). Either naturally contaminated samples or samples artificially inoculated with Fusarium sporotrichioides under field conditions were used. A method based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry coupled with immunoaffinity column cleanup was validated in-house for the simultaneous analysis of both toxins in a variety of matrices, including uncleaned wheat, cleaned wheat, screenings, bran, red dog, fine middlings, and semolina.

In the near future, it is likely that 3-dimensional (3D) surgical endoscopes will replace current 2D imaging systems given the rapid spreading of stereoscopy in the consumer market. In this evaluation study, an emerging technology, the autostereoscopic monitor, is compared with the visualization systems mainly used in laparoscopic surgery: a binocular visor, technically equivalent from the viewer's point of view to the da Vinci 3D console, and a standard 2D monitor. A total of 16 physicians with no experience in 3D interfaces performed 5 different tasks, and the execution time and accuracy of the tasks were evaluated.
