Small-molecule antivirals that prevent the replication of the SARS-CoV-2 virus by blocking the enzymatic activity of its main protease (Mpro) are and will be a tenet of pandemic preparedness. However, the peptidic nature of such compounds often precludes the design of compounds within favorable physical property ranges, limiting cellular activity. Here we describe the discovery of peptide aldehyde Mpro inhibitors with potent enzymatic and cellular antiviral activity.

Article Synopsis
  • Hyperacusis is a condition where people experience extreme sensitivity to everyday sounds, and a surgical procedure using temporalis fascia was developed for patients who don't respond to conservative treatments.
  • A study involved 73 adults who underwent this surgery, categorized into two groups based on their preoperative Loudness Discomfort Levels (LDLs), with significant improvements noted post-surgery.
  • The results showed that patients with higher LDLs (>70 dB) had a greater improvement in sound tolerance and quality of life, with 80.8% of them recommending the surgery, while those in the lower LDL group also improved but to a lesser extent.

Disability is a well-established risk factor for sexual violence victimization among both male and female children. Some research indicates that adolescent females with disabilities are at higher risk of experiencing minor sex exchange (a form of minor sex trafficking victimization) compared to females without disabilities, but there is a dearth of similar research among adolescent males. This study investigates whether physical disability and low cognitive ability are related to sex exchange among minor adolescent males.

Refractory hypothyroidism has been increasingly identified worldwide. Primary hypothyroidism is considered refractory when there is a persistent elevation of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) above the upper limit of normal despite escalating doses of levothyroxine with or without the persistence of hypothyroid symptoms. Further escalation of levothyroxine to supratherapeutic doses could be associated with potential complications such as iatrogenic hyperthyroidism, cardiac failure, and other conditions.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a devastating, progressive neurodegenerative disease resulting in memory loss and a severe reduction in the ability to perform activities of daily living. Ethnicity-related genetic factors promoting the development of dementias among African Americans (AA) and increased risk among women for developing AD indicates that AA women with a parental history of AD are at great risk for developing AD. This phase I study assessed the impact of a 12 week, 20-lesson adapted Argentine Tango intervention ( = 24) to a no-contact control group ( = 10) on measures of plasma inflammatory markers, cognition, and motor and psychosocial performance in middle-aged AA woman at increased risk for AD by virtue of parental history.

Introduction: Globally, an estimated 30% of new HIV infections occur among adolescents (15-24 years), most of whom reside in sub-Saharan Africa. Moreover, HIV-related mortality increased by 50% between 2005 and 2012 for adolescents 10-19 years while it decreased by 30% for all other age groups. Efforts to achieve and maintain optimal adherence to antiretroviral therapy are essential to ensuring viral suppression, good long-term health outcomes, and survival for young people.

After nearly 20 years of study, the origin of the spin-liquid state in Tb2Ti2O7 remains a challenge for experimentalists and theorists alike. To improve our understanding of the exotic magnetism in Tb2Ti2O7, we synthesize a chemical pressure analog: Tb2Ge2O7. Substitution of titanium by germanium results in a lattice contraction and enhanced exchange interactions.

Exhibiting rich magnetic behaviour and potentially multiferroic properties, the dugganites, a Te(6+) containing subgroup of the langasite series, are an attractive family of compounds for future study. It was recently shown that Pb-bearing members of the dugganite series undergo distortions away from the P321 symmetry that is characteristic of the langasites. Here, we detail the consequences these distortions have on the magnetism exhibited by Pb3TeCo3V2O14 and Pb3TeCo3P2O14, solving the magnetic structures of both compounds with respect to a new supercell.
