Fuzzy cognitive map in differential diagnosis of alterations in urinary elimination: a nursing approach.

Purpose: To develop a decision support system to discriminate the diagnoses of alterations in urinary elimination, according to the nursing terminology of NANDA International (NANDA-I).

Methods: A fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) was structured considering six possible diagnoses: stress urinary incontinence, reflex urinary incontinence, urge urinary incontinence, functional urinary incontinence, total urinary incontinence and urinary retention; and 39 signals associated with them. The model was implemented in Microsoft Visual C++(®) Edition 2005 and applied in 195 real cases.

Studies have shown an exacerbated increase in proinflammatory markers during and after muscle injury. In this way, interventions that reduce inflammatory activation appear to be of great interest in muscle injury therapy. Thus, the preset study evaluated the effect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) on the proinflammatory molecules in an animal model of traumatic muscle injury.

Effects of in utero conditions on adult feeding preferences.

The fetal or early origins of adult disease hypothesis states that environmental factors, particularly nutrition, act in early life to program the risks for chronic diseases in adult life. As eating habits can be linked to the development of several diseases including obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, it could be proposed that persistent food preferences across the life-span in people who were exposed to an adverse fetal environment may partially explain their increased risk to develop metabolic disease later in life. In this paper, we grouped the clinical and experimental evidence demonstrating that the fetal environment may impact the individual's food preferences.

Impact of Perinatal Different Intrauterine Environments on Child Growth and Development in the First Six Months of Life--IVAPSA Birth Cohort: rationale, design, and methods.

Background: In the last twenty years, retrospective studies have shown that perinatal events may impact the individual health in the medium and long term. However, only a few prospective studies were designed to address this phenomenon. This study aims to describe the design and methods of the Impact of Perinatal Environmental Variations in the First Six Months of Life - the IVAPSA Birth Cohort.

[The development and evaluation of software to verify diagnostic accuracy].

This article describes the development and evaluation of software that verifies the accuracy of diagnoses made by nursing students. The software was based on a model that uses fuzzy logic concepts, including PERL, the MySQL database for Internet accessibility, and the NANDA-I 2007-2008 classification system. The software was evaluated in terms of its technical quality and usability through specific instruments.

Evaluation of a multimedia online tool for teaching bronchial hygiene to physical therapy students.

Background: Advances in information technology have been widely used in teaching health care professionals. The use of multimedia resources may be important for clinical learning and we are not aware of previous reports using such technology in respiratory physical therapy education.

Objectives: Our approach was to evaluate a conventional bronchial hygiene techniques (BHTs) course with an interactive online environment, including multimedia resources.

Detection of vertical root fractures by conventional radiographic examination and cone beam computed tomography - an in vitro analysis.

Objectives:  This study compared the ability of conventional radiographic and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) examinations to detect vertical root fractures (VRF) in teeth with or without root canal treatment and metallic posts. Furthermore, the influence of using different voxel sizes from CBCT images was assessed.

Methodology:  Sixty single-rooted human teeth were randomly divided into two groups: experimental and control.

Materials And Methods: Animals were divided in nine groups: sham (uninjured muscle); muscle injury without treatment; muscle injury + DMSO; muscle injury + GNP; muscle injury + DMSO + GNP; muscle injury + TPU; muscle injury + TPU + DMSO; muscle injury + TPU + GNP; muscle injury + TPU + DMSO + GNP.

Effects of low-level laser therapy (GaAs) in an animal model of muscular damage induced by trauma.

It has been demonstrated that reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and oxidative damage markers are increased after muscle damage. Recent studies have demonstrated that low-level laser therapy (LLLT) modulates many biochemical processes mainly those related to reduction of muscular injures, increment of mitochondrial respiration and ATP synthesis, as well as acceleration of the healing process. The objective of the present investigation was to verify the influence of LLLT in some parameters of muscular injury, oxidative damage, antioxidant activity, and synthesis of collagen after traumatic muscular injury.

Effects of different physical training protocols on ventricular oxidative stress parameters in infarction-induced rats.

Aim: Physical exercise is important in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, controversy remains around type and intensity of effort required for significant biochemical protective changes. This study evaluated the hypothesis that neutral (APN) and dipeptidyl-IV (DPPIV) aminopeptidase activity levels would be critical for the susceptibility to arthritis in collagen-induced model (CIA). The macroscopic signs of arthritis in CIA rats were checked and peripheral blood, synovial fluid and synovial tissue from knee joint were withdrawn. This study was carried out to ascertain the effects of maternal separation (3 h per day) of mothers from their pups in the neonatal period in rats, which has been suggested to induce a depressive-like state, would have long lasting effects on different parameters including hippocampal Na(+), K(+)-ATPase activity, NO production, free radical production and antioxidant enzymes activities in dams. Recent advances in the study of avian malaria: an overview with an emphasis on the distribution of Plasmodium spp in Brazil.

Avian malaria parasites (Plasmodium) have a worldwide distribution except for Antarctica. They are transmitted exclusively by mosquito vectors (Diptera: Culicidae) and are of particular interest to health care research due to their phylogenetic relationship with human plasmodia and their ability to cause avian malaria, which is frequently lethal in non-adapted avian hosts. However, different features of avian Plasmodium spp, including their taxonomy and aspects of their life-history traits, need to be examined in more detail.

The multidimensional evaluation and treatment of anxiety in children and adolescents: rationale, design, methods and preliminary findings.

Objective: This study aims to describe the design, methods and sample characteristics of the Multidimensional Evaluation and Treatment of Anxiety in Children and Adolescents - the PROTAIA Project.

Method: Students between 10 and 17 years old from all six schools belonging to the catchment area of the Primary Care Unit of Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre were included in the project. It comprises five phases: (1) a community screening phase; (2) a psychiatric diagnostic phase; (3) a multidimensional assessment phase evaluating environmental, neuropsychological, nutritional, and biological factors; (4) a treatment phase, and (5) a translational phase.

Worldwide experience with the Endurant Stent graft: review of the literature.

The Endurant Stent-graft System (Medtronic Vascular, Santa Rosa, CA) is a next-generation device intended to expand the applicability of endovascular aortic repair (EVAR). To date, the Endurant has been evaluated in 9 short- and intermediate-term studies, several in patients presenting with challenging aneurysm anatomies. Consistently, the device in these studies has been shown to be safe and effective, with an excellent rate of deployment success and with very low rates of type I/III endoleaks and reinterventions.
