Unlabelled: Plastic surgery is based on improving esthetic for the patient. In most services, the surgery outcome is evaluated in a subjective manner.

Aim: to objectively assess the degree of patient satisfaction one year after rhinoplasty using the Rhinoplasty Outcome Evaluation questionnaire at a referral academic center.

Recommended curriculum for subspecialty training in transplant infectious disease on behalf of the American Society of Transplantation Infectious Diseases Community of Practice Educational Initiatives Working Group.

The American Society of Transplantation Infectious Diseases (ID) Community of Practice has established an education workgroup to identify core components of a curriculum for training specialists in transplant ID. Clinical, laboratory, and research training form the triad of components on which an additional year of ID training, dedicated to the care of solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients, should be based. The recommended training environment would have access to adequate numbers of transplant patients, along with qualified faculty committed to teaching specialized fellows in this area.

Outcomes from pandemic influenza A H1N1 infection in recipients of solid-organ transplants: a multicentre cohort study.

Background: There are few data on the epidemiology and outcomes of influenza infection in recipients of solid-organ transplants. We aimed to establish the outcomes of pandemic influenza A H1N1 and factors leading to severe disease in a cohort of patients who had received transplants.

Methods: We did a multicentre cohort study of adults and children who had received organ transplants with microbiological confirmation of influenza A infection from April to December, 2009.

Cytomegalovirus disease among donor-positive/recipient-negative lung transplant recipients in the era of valganciclovir prophylaxis.

Background: Valganciclovir prophylaxis is advocated for lung transplant recipients, but its efficacy is unknown.

Methods: Retrospective review was done of 109 donor-positive/recipient-negative lung transplant patients who received alemtuzumab induction and valganciclovir for cytomegalovirus prophylaxis.

Results: Median duration of follow-up after transplant was 27 months.

Voriconazole exposure and geographic location are independent risk factors for squamous cell carcinoma of the skin among lung transplant recipients.

Background: Skin cancer, in particular squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), is the most common malignancy after solid-organ transplantation. SCC has been reported in immunosuppressed patients receiving voriconazole, but the agent has not been shown to be a risk factor. Universal voriconazole prophylaxis and alemtuzumab induction are standard in our lung transplant program.

[Experience with 100 pancreas transplants].

Report our experience with 100 pancreas transplants performed in a period of seven years. METHODS. Between January 2001 and January 2008, 100 patients underwent pancreatic transplantation at our center, 88 simultaneous pancreas kidney transplantation (SPK) and 12 pancreas transplantation alone (PTA).

A prospective study on the dynamics of the clinical and immunological evolution of human Leishmania (L.) infantum chagasi infection in the Brazilian Amazon region.

This prospective study was carried out from October 2003 to December 2005 and involved a cohort of 946 individuals of both genders, aged 1-89 years, from an endemic area for American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL), in Pará State, Brazil. The aim of the study was to analyze the dynamics of the clinical and immunological evolution of human Leishmania (L.) infantum chagasi infection represented by the following clinical-immunological profiles: asymptomatic infection (AI); symptomatic infection (SI=AVL); subclinical oligosymptomatic infection (SOI); subclinical resistant infection (SRI); and indeterminate initial infection (III).

Carbonyl groups: Bridging the gap between sleep disordered breathing and coronary artery disease.

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is related to coronary artery disease (CAD), but the mechanisms are uncertain. SDB is characterized by periods of intermittent hypoxia and free radical formation. This study tested the hypothesis that carbonylation can be the link between SDB and CAD.

In vitro paradoxical growth of Pythium insidiosum in the presence of caspofungin.

Pythium insidiosum is a zoosporic organism which causes pythiosis in humans and animals. This study aimed to report the paradoxical growth of Brazilian P. insidiosum strains when submitted to in vitro susceptibility tests with caspofungin.

Peptostreptococcus infective endocarditis and bacteremia. Analysis of cases at a tertiary medical center and review of the literature.

Peptostreptococcus infective endocarditis is rare but associated with high morbidity. We report two cases and evaluate all positive blood cultures for Peptostreptococcus at our institution, followed by a review of the literature. This organism causes a subacute presentation and cardiac valve pathology is a risk factor.

Skin lesions in envenoming by cnidarians (Portuguese man-of-war and jellyfish): etiology and severity of accidents on the Brazilian coast.

This work attempts to establish dermatological identification patterns for Brazilian cnidarian species and a probable correlation with envenoming severity. In an observational prospective study, one hundred and twenty-eight patients from the North Coast region of São Paulo State, Brazil were seen between 2002 and 2008. About 80% of these showed only local effects (erythema, edema, and pain) with small, less than 20 cm, oval or round skin marks and impressions from small tentacles.

The presence of methylation of the p16INK4A gene and human papillomavirus in high-grade cervical squamous intraepithelial lesions.

Methylation is a chemical modification in which a methyl group (CH3) is added to the cytosine in the promoter region of the gene. It involves a very frequent epigenetic event that is found in many human cancers. Currently, there is no consensus on whether methylation of the p16 gene could be used as a biomarker in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.

Periapical repair in dog teeth: root canal adhesive filling by using the Resilon System.

Introduction: New filling biomaterials with better physicochemical properties would create a favorable biologic environment for the healing of periapical tissues. The aim of this study was to evaluate periapical repair after biomechanical preparation and root filling with an adhesive system compared with the gold standard material (gutta-percha+sealer) in dog teeth.

Methods: The pulp of 25 root canals was removed.

Impact of mold infections in explanted lungs on outcomes of lung transplantation.

Introduction: Little is known about the incidence or significance of mold infections in the explanted lungs of lung transplant recipients.

Method: We reviewed the histopathology of the explanted lungs from 304 patients who underwent lung transplantation at our institution from 2005 to 2007 and received alemtuzumab induction therapy and posttransplant voriconazole prophylaxis.

Results: Invasive mold infections were present in the explanted lungs of 5% (14 of 304) of patients, including chronic necrotizing pneumonias (n=7), mycetomas (n=4), and invasive fungal pneumonias (n=3).

One hundred pancreas transplants performed in a Brazilian institution.

After decades of controversy surrounding the therapeutic validity of pancreas transplantation, the procedure has become accepted as the preferred treatment for selected patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Between January 2001 and January 2008, 100 patients underwent pancreatic transplantation at our center: 88 simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation and 12 pancreas transplantations alone. Pancreas graft management of the exocrine drainage technique involved enteric drainage in 8 (all simultaneous pancreas-kidney) and the bladder in 92 cases.

Further evidences on a new diagnostic approach for monitoring human Leishmania (L.) infantum chagasi infection in Amazonian Brazil.

This was a prospective study carried out during a period over 2 years (May/2006-September/2008) with a cohort of 1,099 individuals of both genders, aged 1 year old and older, from an endemic area of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) in Pará state, Brazil. The object was to analyze the prevalence and incidence of human Leishmania (L.) infantum chagasi infection as well as the dynamics evolution of its clinical-immunological profiles prior identified: (1) asymptomatic infection (AI); (2) symptomatic infection (SI = AVL); (3) sub-clinical oligosymptomatic infection (SOI); (4) sub-clinical resistant infection (SRI) and; (5) indeterminate initial infection (III).

Periapical cemental dysplasia in twin sisters: a case report.

The aim of this study was to report a case of periapical cemental dysplasia affecting the mandibular incisors in 38-year-old twin sisters. The major concern is failure to recognize the nature of the lesion, which may result in unnecessary root canal treatment or extractions on the assumption that the lesion represents inflammatory periapical pathosis.

Interspecies spread of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase gene in a single patient.

Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing K. pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Serratia marcescens were sequentially identified in a patient who underwent small bowel transplantation. Molecular typing and plasmid analysis suggested that the KPC gene was acquired by E.

[Depressive and anxious symptoms in mothers of newborns with and without malformations].

Purpose: the main goal of this study is to evaluate the emotional conditions among mothers of newborns with visible malformation (Group M) and mothers of eutrophic newborns (Group E) soon after birth.

Methods: twenty-two mothers from the Group M were matched by age and number of children to 22 mothers of the Group E. They were assessed through the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI).

Predictors of hospital mortality in hemodynamically stable patients with pulmonary embolism.

Background: Pulmonary embolism is associated with high mortality in patients with hypotension or circulatory shock. However, the association between some clinical variables and mortality is still unclear in hemodynamically stable patients.

Objectives: To derive an in-hospital mortality risk stratification model in hemodynamically stable patients with pulmonary embolism.

Mycoplasma hominis pericarditis in a lung transplant recipient: review of the literature about an uncommon but important cardiothoracic pathogen.

Purulent pericarditis due to Mycoplasma hominis is rare, and is usually associated with mediastinitis or pleuritis following cardiothoracic surgery. We report the first case to our knowledge of isolated purulent pericarditis caused by M. hominis in a lung transplant recipient and review previously reported cases of this disease.

Ex vivo and in vivo biological behavior of Leishmania (Viannia) shawi.

Since the first description of Leishmania (Viannia) shawi, few studies were performed with this parasite. In the present work, the in vivo and ex vivo behavior of L. (Viannia) shawi infection was studied using murine model.

Evaluation of the toxic and genotoxic potential of landfill leachates using bioassays.

Landfill leachates are liquid effluents with elevated concentrations of chemical compounds that can cause serious environmental pollution. In the south of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, a sanitary landfill was installed that employs a system of anaerobic/facultative lagoons for the treatment of its leachate. The present work examined the toxic and genotoxic potential of untreated and treated landfill leachates using bioassays.

Endodontic re-treatment associated with the elimination of amalgam root-end filling through sinus tracts: a report of two cases.

Two patients presented with complaints of recurrent drainage of purulent exudate from sinus tracts, inflammation and pain after endodontic re-treatment of the maxillary left (Case 1) and right (Case 2) lateral incisors. The periapical lesions persisted after apical curettage, apicectomy and root-end filling with silver amalgam. Radiographic examination exposed the poor quality of the endodontic treatments and the silver amalgam root-end fillings, which were associated with periapical radiolucent areas in both teeth.
