The prognostic value of cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) variables for major cardiovascular events in patients with heart failure (HF) is widely established. However, the prognostic value of these variables as predictors of appropriate implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapies has not been sufficiently well addressed. This study aimed to evaluate CPET variables such as peak oxygen uptake (VO peak), relationship between change in minute ventilation (VE) and carbon dioxide output (VCO) during incremental exercise (VE/VCO slope) and exercise-related periodic breathing (EPB) as appropriate ICD therapy predictors in HF patients.

Sediments represent complex mixtures and the impacts of their physical and chemical processes on biota are important for assessing potential health risks. We aimed to rank sediment samples from Guanabara Bay by developing an algorithm (quality ratio-QR), focusing on key sediment parameters (fine grain size, total organic carbon (TOC), metal concentrations) and enzymatic activities (dehydrogenase (DHA-energy production into cell) and esterases (EST-hydrolase organic matter outside the cell membrane)) of in situ microbial communities. Our QR is supported by quantitative information and significant correlations between geochemical and microbial processes.

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of calcium hydroxide (CH) associated with two different vehicles as a capping material for pulp tissue in primary molars, compared with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA).

Methodology: Forty-five primary mandibular molars with dental caries were treated by conventional pulpotomy using one of the following materials: MTA only (MTA group), CH with saline (CH+saline group) and CH with polyethylene glycol (CH+PEG group) (15 teeth/group). Clinical and periapical radiographic examinations of the pulpotomized teeth were performed 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment.

We describe the gross, microscopical, histochemical and immunohistochemical features of a sclerosing pneumopathic disease process resembling primary multicentric pulmonary low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma in a juvenile female leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). The animal was fresh, presented in good body condition and stranded dead in Aracaju, Sergipe state, Brazil, in September, 2017. Grossly, the lungs were enlarged bilaterally and the parenchyma was replaced by large, coalescing, white, firm masses that extended into the bronchi and bronchioles and to the pleura.

Intravascular hemolysis, in addition to reducing red cell counts, incurs extensive vascular inflammation and oxidative stress. One product of hemolysis, heme, is a potent danger associated molecular pattern (DAMP), activating leukocytes and inducing cytokine expression and processing, among other pro-inflammatory effects. We explored pathways by which heme-induced inflammation may be amplified under sterile conditions.

CADM2 has been associated with a range of behavioural and metabolic traits, including physical activity, risk-taking, educational attainment, alcohol and cannabis use and obesity. Here, we set out to determine whether CADM2 contributes to mechanisms shared between mental and physical health disorders. We assessed genetic variants in the CADM2 locus for association with phenotypes in the UK Biobank, IMPROVE, PROCARDIS and SCARFSHEEP studies, before performing meta-analyses.

The use of residue of sugarcane ethanol industry named vinasse in fertirrigation is an established and widespread practice in Brazil. Both non-concentrated vinasse (NCV) and concentrated vinasse (CV) are used in fertirrigation, particularly to replace the potassium fertilizer. Although studies on the chemical and organic composition of vinasse and their impact on nitrous oxide emissions when applied in soil have been carried out, no studies have evaluated the microbial community composition and diversity in different forms of vinasse.

Transgene product expression levels are measured in genetically engineered (GE) crops containing single transformation events and the measured expression levels are then utilized in food, feed, and environmental safety assessments as part of the requirements for de-regulation of the event. Many countries also require measurement of expression levels and safety assessments for GE breeding stacks, even though the breeding stacks are composed of single events that have been previously assessed. Transgene product expression levels were measured in tissues of maize, soybean, and cotton breeding stacks and each of their component single events.

Patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing proteins (PNPLAs) are involved in triglyceride hydrolysis and lipid-droplet homeostasis in mice, but the physiological significance of the PNPLAs for triglyceride metabolism in human hepatocytes is unclear. Here, we investigate the roles of PNPLA2, PNPLA3, and PNPLA4 in triglyceride metabolism of human Huh7 and HepG2 hepatoma cells using gene-specific inhibition methods. siRNA inhibition of PNPLA3 or PNPLA4 is not associated with changes in triglyceride hydrolysis, secretion of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs), or triglyceride accumulation.

Kinetic energy equipartition is a premise for many deterministic and stochastic molecular dynamics methods that aim at sampling a canonical ensemble. While this is expected for real systems, discretization errors introduced by the numerical integration may lead to deviations from equipartition. Fortunately, backward error analysis allows us to obtain a higher-order estimate of the quantity that is actually subject to equipartition.
