Association Between Inappropriate Prescribing According to the 2023 Beers Criteria and Different Health Outcomes: A 1-Year Longitudinal Study in Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the association between the 2023 Beers criteria for inappropriate prescribing and different health outcomes among community-dwelling older individuals after a 1-year follow-up period and to assess the use and factors associated with inappropriate prescribing.

Methods: This longitudinal population study spanning from 2017 to 2018 included 490 community-dwelling older adults (≥60 years old) receiving care from family medicine teams in the city of São João del-Rei, Brazil. The 2023 Beers criteria was used to identify potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs).

Red Sea elasmobranch populations are facing alarming declines. Effective conservation efforts require management strategies informed by extensive datasets and by developing an understanding of distribution patterns within the basin, which is currently lacking. This study introduces CERSE (Central and Eastern Red Sea Elasmobranchs), a comprehensive compilation of elasmobranch observations in the central and eastern Red Sea basin following the route of the Red Sea Decade Expedition.

Integrating OMICS-based platforms and analytical tools for diagnosis and management of pancreatic cancer: a review.

Cancer remains the second leading cause of death worldwide, surpassed only by cardiovascular disease. From the different types of cancer, pancreatic cancer (PaC) has one of the lowest survival rates, with a survival rate of about 20% after the first year of diagnosis and about 8% after 5 years. The lack of highly sensitive and specific biomarkers, together with the absence of symptoms in the early stages, determines a late diagnosis, which is associated with a decrease in the effectiveness of medical intervention, regardless of its nature - surgery and/or chemotherapy.

Assessment of the Radiographic Angular Parameters in the Coronal Plane of the Lower Limbs in Subjects without Knee Osteoarthritis in a Reference Hospital of the Brazilian Unified Health System.

 The present study aims to demonstrate the radiological angular parameters of a sample of patients treated at our institution and to compare the radiological abnormalities with other classifications or parameters from the literature.  We evaluated a sample of patients submitted to panoramic radiographic examinations of the lower limbs. The inclusion criteria were: (1) Patients without knee osteoarthritis as assessed by an orthopedist.

Assessment of Reproducibility and Agreement of the IDEAL Classification for Distal Radius Fractures.

 To analyze the reproducibility and intra- and interobserver agreement of the IDEAL classification for distal radius fractures.  This qualitative, analytical study evaluated 50 pairs of radiographs in two views of patients with distal radius fractures. There were ten observers with different levels of orthopedic training who assessed the radiographs in three different evaluations.

Characterization and analysis of the bioactivity of the Piper rivinoides Kunth essential oil and its components myristicin and elemicin, against opportunistic fungal pathogens.

Candidiasis is an infectious disease caused by some fungi of the genus Candida. In Brazil, the incidence rate is higher than in European countries and the United States, and health problems occur mainly due to the virulence factors of the fungi, which have made treatment with commercial drugs difficult. Considering the context, plants rich in phenolic compounds, such as those of the genus Piper, have been studied due to their antimicrobial properties.

Stroke in Brazil: prevalence, activity limitations, access to healthcare, and physiotherapeutic treatment.

Background:  Stroke remains a public health problem, reported as the third cause of disability. Among survivors, the ability to perform usual daily activities may be reduced, requiring rehabilitation.

Objective:  To investigate the prevalence of self-reported stroke, the accessibility of healthcare, and the degree and percentage of patients with limitations in usual activities who are unassisted by physiotherapeutic treatment in different regions of the country.

Effect of modified intravascular laser irradiation of blood in the oral and systemic conditions during dental treatment-A systematic review.

The aim of this study was to investigate the scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of modified-ILIB (intravascular laser irradiation of blood) in the control of systemic conditions and/or oral changes during dental care. This systematic literature review study aimed to answer the question, "Is modified-ILIB an effective adjuvant therapy in the control of systemic conditions and/or oral changes in children and adults during dental treatment?". The protocol for this systematic review was registered in the PROSPERO database under number CRD42023493800.

Enhanced Oral Bioavailability and Biodistribution of Voriconazole through Zein-Pectin-Hyaluronic Acid Nanoparticles.

Nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems offer a solution to the pharmacokinetic limitations of voriconazole (VRC), including saturable metabolism and low oral bioavailability. This study developed zein/pectin/hyaluronic acid nanoparticles (ZPHA-VRC NPs) to improve VRC's pharmacokinetics and biodistribution. The nanoparticles had a spherical morphology with an average diameter of 268 nm, a zeta potential of -48.

Non-surgical endodontic retreatments in Brazil's public dental services: a 15-year nationwide register-based study.

The objective of this study was to analyze the provision of non-surgical endodontic retreatments in Brazil's public dental services from 2008 to 2022. A time series was outlined for this purpose. The annual numbers of non-surgical endodontic retreatments were retrieved from the Brazilian National Outpatient Information System and adjusted per 100,000 inhabitants to obtain the incidence between 2008 and 2022.

Long-term chronic infection of a young immunocompromised patient by the SARS-CoV-2 P.2 VOI.

An immunocompromised patient was infected by the SARS-CoV-2 variant of interest named Zeta (P.2) in February 2021. More than one year later, he suffered from symptomatic COVID-19 and sequencing revealed the same variant, which accumulated 23 substitutions.

Efficacy of treatment with tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes as adoptive cell therapy: an integrative review.

Objective: This integrative review article examines the efficacy of adoptive cell therapy using tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, with a particular focus on the treatment of melanomas and other solid tumors.

Methods: The methodology encompasses theme definition, comprehensive database searches, and a critical review of pertinent literature. Of the 1,947 articles initially identified, 15 were meticulously selected based on stringent inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Complexities of nursing in healthcare waste management in hospitals.

Objectives: to understand how healthcare waste management is developed by nursing professionals in hospitals.

Methods: qualitative research, whose theoretical and methodological frameworks were Complexity Theory and Grounded Theory. Thirty-two nursing professionals from a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro participated in the study.

Association of remimazolam with delirium and cognitive function: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

Background And Study Objective: Delirium is an organic mental syndrome significantly associated with long-term cognitive decline, increased hospital stays and higher mortality. This systematic review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) with meta-analysis assesses the association of remimazolam with postoperative cognitive function and delirium compared with non-benzodiazepine hypnotics.

Oral pemphigus vulgaris diagnostic characteristics and treatment: a systematic review.

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a rare, potentially fatal, immune-mediated chronic disease characterized by the presence of bullous intraepithelial lesions on mucous membranes and skin. This study aimed to perform a systematic literature review covering PV clinical and histopathological aspects and treatment. The literature searches were carried out in the Pubmed, Periódicos Capes, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science and Scielo databases.

Changes in population genetic structure of serotype 19A Streptococcus pneumoniae after universal childhood use of the 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in Brazil.

Background: The introduction of the 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) for nationwide childhood immunization in 2010 led to a significant reduction in colonization and invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) by vaccine serotypes in young. However, non-vaccine serotypes have emerged, and serotype 19A is now the leading cause of IPD in Brazil.

Methods: We analyzed 32 serotype 19A isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae recovered from children and adults who attended different health facilities in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between 2010 and 2023.

Gene editing without ex vivo culture evades genotoxicity in human hematopoietic stem cells.

Gene editing the BCL11A erythroid enhancer is a validated approach to fetal hemoglobin (HbF) induction for β-hemoglobinopathy therapy, though heterogeneity in edit allele distribution and HbF response may impact its safety and efficacy. Here, we compare combined CRISPR-Cas9 editing of the BCL11A +58 and +55 enhancers with leading gene modification approaches under clinical investigation. Dual targeting of the BCL11A +58 and +55 enhancers with 3xNLS-SpCas9 and two single guide RNAs (sgRNAs) resulted in superior HbF induction, including in sickle cell disease (SCD) patient xenografts, attributable to simultaneous disruption of core half E-box/GATA motifs at both enhancers.

Proper activity of the age-dependent miR156 is required for leaf heteroblasty and extrafloral nectary development in Passiflora spp.

Passion flower extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) protrude from leaves and facilitate mutualistic interactions with insects; however, how age cues control EFN growth remains poorly understood. Here, we examined leaf and EFN morphology and development of two Passiflora species with distinct leaf shapes, and compared the phenotype of these to transgenics with manipulated activity of the age-dependent miR156, which targets several SQUAMOSA PROMOTER-BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE (SPL) transcription factors. Low levels of miR156 correlated with leaf maturation and EFN formation in Passiflora edulis and P.

Quality of reporting on psychological interventions in psychedelic treatments: a systematic review.

Although studies of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy are accumulating, there is no consensus regarding best practice of the psychotherapeutic component. In this systematic review, we summarised the quality of reporting on psychological interventions in research about psychedelic treatments. The design followed PRISMA guidelines and was preregistered in PROSPERO (CRD42022319221).

Efficacy of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy in endodontics of primary teeth: a scoping review.

The objective of this study was to identify, describe and synthesize the data published about the effectiveness of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in the pulpectomy of primary teeth. A search was conducted in six electronic databases and the gray literature in June and July 2023, without restrictions on language or date of publication. The search strategy included indexed terms (MeSH terms) and your synonyms.

Characterization of dark septate endophytic fungi Periconia macrospinosa isolated from roots of sugarcane in São Paulo, Brazil.

Dark Septate Endophytic (DSE) fungi can benefit plants by optimizing nutrient uptake, biosynthesis of phytohormones-like compounds, and stress relief such as toxic metals. The objective was to characterize in vitro 57 strains of the DSE Periconia macrospinosa isolated from sugarcane roots, indicating the most promising in solubilizing phosphate sources, growing in different metal and vinasse contents, and producing molecules related to indoleacetic acid (IAA). The strains were from the Embrapa Agrobiology Fungi Collection.

Antimicrobial activity of PMMA enriched with nano-clay loaded with metronidazole and chlorhexidine.

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) materials are highly susceptible to microbial colonization, predisposing patients to oral infections. To address this concern, we loaded PMMA samples with montmorillonite clay (MMT), a crystalline nanoparticle, in combination with chlorhexidine (CHX) or metronidazole (MET) targeting improved antimicrobial action. PMMA samples were prepared with or without MMT loaded with either CHX or MET, establishing the following groups: control (acrylic resin without the addition of nanoparticles), MMT/CHX (acrylic resin with 5% by weight of MMT loaded with CHX), and MMT/MET (acrylic resin with 5% by weight of MMT loaded with MET).

Understanding Behavior Change in Clinical Practice Guideline Implementation: A Qualitative Study.

Background And Purpose: Growing numbers of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are available to neurologic physical therapists to guide and inform evidence-based patient care. Adherence to CPG recommendations often necessitates behavior change for therapists and patients. The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain insight into the experiences, perspectives, and drivers of behavioral change for therapists working to improve adherence to a CPG.
