In this paper, melting of long Al nanowires is studied using a phase field model in which deviatoric transformation strain described by a kinetic equation produces a promoting driving force for both melting and solidification and consequently, a lower melting temperature is resolved. The coupled system of the Ginzburg-Landau equation for solidification/melting transformation, the kinetic equation for the deviatoric transformation strain and elasticity equations are solved using the COMSOL finite element code to obtain the evolution of melt solution. A deviatoric strain kinetic coefficient is used which results in the same pressure as that calculated with the Laplace equation in a solid neglecting elastic stresses.

The locking compression plate (LCP) and screw sets are widely used as internal fixator assemblies to treat long bone fractures. However, the surgeon's critical challenge is choosing the implant set (plate and screws) for each patient. Density functional theory calculations are robust tools to explore the mechanical properties of pristine structures at their ground state but become exceedingly expensive for large systems at finite temperatures. Classical molecular dynamics (CMD) simulations offer the possibility to study larger systems at elevated temperatures, but they require accurate interatomic potentials. Herein the authors propose the concept of first-principles multiscale modeling of mechanical properties, where ab initio level of accuracy is hierarchically bridged to explore the mechanical/failure response of macroscopic systems.

In 2007 the Italian Ministry of Health/CCM promoted and funded the project "System of surveys of behavioral risks in ages 6-17", coordinated by the National Institute of Health. One of the aims of the project is the definition and implementation of a data collection system on the weight of primary school children, their eating habits, physical activity and school initiatives favoring the healthy growth of children, called "OKkio alla SALUTE". In 2008 the first survey of OKkio was conducted in 18 Italian regions.
