A 36-year-old pregnant woman with a prior history of depression and recent gunshot wounds presented with sudden deterioration in her mental status. Clinical examination revealed psychosis, hallucinations, and lack of orientation, with an otherwise normal neurological and cardiorespiratory examination. Computed tomographic scan of her head was normal, and she was diagnosed with acute psychosis and excited delirium.

Ground-level ozone (O) affects trees through visible leaf injury, accelerating leaf senescence, declining foliar chlorophyll content, photosynthetic activity, growth, carbon sequestration, predisposing to pests attack and a variety of other physiological effects. Tree crown defoliation is one of the most important parameters that is representative of forest health and vitality. Effects of air pollution on forests have been investigated through manipulative experiments that are not representative of the real environmental conditions observed in the field.

To artificially simulate the impacts of ground-level ozone (O) on vegetation, ozone FACE (Free Air Controlled Exposure) systems are increasingly recommended. We describe here a new-generation, three-dimensional ozone FACE, with O diffusion through laser-generated micro-holes, pre-mixing of air and O, O generator with integral oxygen generator, continuous (day/night) exposure and full replication. Based on three O levels and assumptions on the pre-industrial O levels, we describe principles to calculate relative yield/biomass and estimate impacts even at lower-than-ambient O levels.

In the Romanian forest ecosystems, the first measurements of ambient ozone (O(3)) concentrations started in 1997 in 6 of 26 locations established in a trans-Carpathian Network. Furthermore, three additional ozone and other phytotoxic pollutant (NO(x), SO(2) and NH(3)) monitoring networks were installed in 2000 in Retezat (11 locations) and during 2006-2009 in Bucegi-Piatra Craiului (22 locations) LTER Sites. Since 2007, in four Intensive Forest Monitoring plots (level II), measurements of ozone concentrations were developed.

Air pollution, bulk precipitation, throughfall, soil condition, foliar nutrients, as well as forest health and growth were studied in 2006-2009 in a long-term ecological research (LTER) network in the Bucegi Mountains, Romania. Ozone (O(3)) was high indicating a potential for phytotoxicity. Ammonia (NH(3)) concentrations rose to levels that could contribute to deposition of nutritional nitrogen (N) and could affect biodiversity changes.

Avian reoviruses (ARV) are less well understood than their mammalian counterparts. ARV are ubiquitous in commercial poultry and frequently isolated from acutely infected chickens. We previously described isolation of ARV temperature-sensitive (ts) mutants after nitrosoguanidine mutagenesis of wild-type ARV138, their assignment to 7 recombination groups (A-G), and genetic mapping of mutants in groups A-D to specific gene segments.
