A group of ninety-five infants was followed from birth to one year of age, and the total serum IgE concentration was studied. The infants were fed on breast milk, home-prepared cow's milk formula, or proprietary infant milk formula. Solid foods were introduced at 3.

We studied flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) saturation of erythrocyte glutathione reductase, which should reflect riboflavin nutritional status, in 28 healthy newborns, and followed 37 newborns with hyperbilirubinemia prior to the start of and during phototherapy. The results indicate that healthy newborns on human milk feeding, relatively poor in riboflavin, have evidence of a transient riboflavin depletion soon after birth.

Mild iron deficiency by laboratory criteria and by response to iron medication was common. The children with biopsy evidence of flat mucosa or intraepithelial lymphocytosis had a greater iron loss in their stools than those patients with normal, or almost normal, histology.

The labelled proteins were separated by polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis and visualized by fluorography. Surface glycoprotein patterns discriminatory for acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) were found.

The infants were weaned at different ages either to a proprietary infant milk formula or to a home-prepared cow's milk formula. Solid foods were introduced at 3.

15 cases of congenital haemolytic anaemia have thus far been attributed to hexokinase (HK) deficiency in erythrocytes. We report some clinical, biochemical and genetic findings from 5 members of a Finnish family with this deficiency. The proband, a 1-year-old girl, was the only patient with anaemia.

The present investigation is the first longitudinal study of the concentration of iron in breast milk and is based on 229 milk samples obtained from 27 mothers during their period of lactation up to 9 months. The samples were collected at the beginning and at the end of each feed during a 24-h period to reflect as accurately as possible the actual concentration of iron. The median value declined during the course of lactation from 0.

We followed up 238 infants on 7 occasions during their first year of life. The diets of the infants were systematically either supplemented or not supplemented with iron. Developmental changes in serum ferritin were determined from a group with adequate intake of iron and without evidence of iron deficiency by three laboratory criteria: hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume and transferrin saturation.

We followed a group of small preterm infants without iron supplementation who were either exclusively breast-fed or weaned early to industrial infant milk formula or home-prepared cow's milk formula. The gain of iron was compared within the milk groups on the basis of hemoglobin and serum ferritin concentrations at the ages of 3 and 4 mth when only trace amounts of solid foods had been given.

The normal values were obtained from a selected group of healthy, term infants who were receiving continuous iron supplementation during a period of one year while normal values for transferrin saturation and serum ferritin were being maintained. The data indicated marked developmental changes in red blood cell counts and indices during the first year of life that are independent of iron intake.

In order to accurately determine when this depletion occurs, we measured the hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, serum iron/iron-binding capacity, and serum ferritin in 117 low-birth-weight infants (1,000 to 2,000 gm) from 0.5 until 6 months of age.

Thirty healthy infants, aged 11-13 months, were studied with regard to the iron absorption from proprietary milk formula. The infants were divided into three groups (I-III) depending on the concentration of iron in the formula: 0.8 (I), 6.

Twenty of these patients used clozapine (Leponex). The clastogenic effects of clozapine in vitro were studied in the lymphocyte cultures of three patients--one free of hematologic disease and two who 6 months earlier had had agranulocytosis attributed to the use of clozapine.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the concentration of SF in children with a variety of malignancies correlated with the activity of their disease. Patients with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) at initial diagnosis (n = 11) and relapse (n = 15) had a mean SF of 238 and 338 ng/ml, respectively, compared to the normal mean of 31 ng/ml and range of 7 to 140 ng/ml in children.

The relationship of breast and cow milk feeding to absorption of iron and to iron status was investigated in a total of 45 term infants at about six months of age. Iron absorption was measured by total body counting.

Before treatment, 41% of the children had concentrations of serum ferritin below normal, 18% had a subnormal serum transferrin saturation, and 26% were anemic. After supplementation, only 6% had a subnormal serum ferritin concentration.

Rats were provided with either an iron-deficient diet or an identical control diet with added ferrous sulphate starting at 10 d of age and continuing after weaning at 21 d. At 28 d or 48 d of age the deficient animals received 5 mg of iron (iron dextran) i.
