Leptin can indirectly regulate fatty-acid metabolism and synthesis in muscle in vivo and directly in incubated muscle ex vivo. In addition, non-synonymous mutations in the bovine leptin gene (LEP) are associated with carcass intramuscular fat (IMF) content. However, the effects of LEP on lipid synthesis of adipocytes have not been clearly studied at the cellular level.

Skeletal muscle is an important component of livestock and poultry organisms. The proliferation and differentiation of myoblasts are highly coordinated processes, which rely on the regulation of miRNA. MiRNAs are widely present in organisms and play roles in various biological processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis.

Chinese Holstein in South China suffer heat stress for a long period, which leads to evolutionary differences from Chinese Holstein in North China. The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters of fertility traits for Chinese Holstein in South China. A total of 167,840 Chinese Holstein heifers and cows from Guangming Animal Husbandry Co.

The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) family is highly conserved in mammals, and is involved in a variety of physiological phenomena like regeneration, development, cell proliferation, and differentiation. In this study, 13 MAPK genes were identified in cattle and their corresponding protein properties were characterized using genome-wide identification and analysis. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the 13 BtMAPKs were cluster grouped into eight major evolutionary branches, which were segmented into three large subfamilies: ERK, p38 and JNK MAPK.

Several microRNAs (miRNAs) are known to participate in adipogenesis. However, their role in this process, especially in the differentiation of bovine preadipocytes, remains to be elucidated. This study was intended to clarify the effect of microRNA-33a (miR-33a) on the differentiation of bovine preadipocytes by cell culture, real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR (qPCR), Oil Red staining, BODIPY staining, and Western blotting.

Carcass weight, as a measure of meat yield, and body measurements are directly correlated traits in livestock. However, longitudinally collected phenotype records of local breeds are not comprehensive. The research was performed on Qinchuan bull population to understand their growth and development, and data from Qinchuan bull that was weighed and measured at birth, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months of age was analyzed.

The stability of internal reference genes is crucial to the reliability of gene expression results using real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR). Inappropriate reference genes may lead to inaccurate results or even wrong conclusions. This study aims to identify stable reference genes for analyzing the expression of proliferation-related and differentiation-inducing genes in bovine primary preadipocytes (BPPs) in vitro.

Qinchuan cattle has gradually improved in body shape and growth rate in the long-term breeding process from the draft cattle to beef cattle. As the head of the five local yellow cattle in China, the Qinchuan cattle has been designated as a specialized beef cattle breed. We investigated the selection signatures using whole genome sequencing data in Qinchuan cattle.

Astaxanthin (AST) is a red pigment of carotenoid and is considered a high-quality keto-carotenoid pigment with food, livestock, cosmetic, therapeutic and nutraceutical proposes. Astaxanthin exists naturally in fish, crustacean, algae, and birds that naturally exists, principally as fatty acid esters. Many investigations have exhibited the beneficial impacts of astaxanthin when utilized as a pharmaceutical agent in animal nutrition.

Background: Weaning stress of piglets causes a huge economic loss to the pig industry. Balance and stability of the intestinal microenvironment is an effective way to reduce the occurance of stress during the weaning process. Clostridium butyricum, as a new microecological preparation, is resistant to high temperature, acid, bile salts and some antibiotics.

The development of hair follicle in cashmere goats shows significant periodic change, as with mice and humans. However, for cashmere goat with double-coat, the periodic change may be due to other regulatory molecules and signal pathways. To understand the mechanism of periodic development of hair follicle, we performed a weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) to mine key genes and establish an interaction network by utilizing the NCBI public dataset.

Although numerous studies investigated the effect of UASMS2 polymorphism in leptin gene on cattle production, a consensus has not yet been reached. Therefore, we reviewed and meta-analyzed the effects of UASMS2 on cattle. We searched potentially relevant studies from seven databases (to December 25, 2019).

Bone morphogenic protein and activin membrane-bound inhibitor (BAMBI) is a transmembrane protein that affects the growth, development and muscle regeneration of the body by regulating the TGF-β, BMP and Wnt signaling pathways. Studies have found that BAMBI has important regulatory functions in skeletal muscle and preadipocytes in vivo and in vitro. However, research on this protein in cattle is lacking.

This study investigated the effect of ELOVL6 (elongation of very long chain fatty acids protein 6) and its underlying mechanism on lipid metabolism in bovine adipocytes. The ELOVL6 gene was overexpressed in bovine adipocytes by adenoviruses, and RNA sequencing was performed. Overexpression of ELOVL6 showed reduced proportions of C14:0 (Myristic) and C16:0 (palmitate) fatty acids and increased proportions of C18.

The gene family with sequence similarity 13 member A () has recently been identified as a marker gene in insulin sensitivity and lipolysis. In this study, we first analyzed the expression patterns of this gene in different tissues of adult cattle and then constructed a phylogenetic tree based on the FAM13A amino acid sequence. This showed that subcutaneous adipose tissue had the highest expression in all tissues except lung tissue.
