Detection of hydrazine is particularly important given its toxicity and extensive application in various industries. In the present paper, a colorimetric fluorescent probe NI-CIN based on 1,8-naphthalimide derivative was rationally designed and simply synthesized for specific detection of hydrazine based on the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism. Upon the addition of hydrazine, a significant fluorescence enhancement at 556 nm could be observed within 4 min with a distinct color change from colorless to bright yellow, readily observed by naked eye.

Article Synopsis
  • Hydrazine is highly toxic and poses a risk to the environment and living organisms, making it crucial to monitor its levels for human health.
  • A new fluorescent probe called PC-N H has been developed, which effectively detects hydrazine with great specificity, a low limit of detection (88 nM), and functions across a wide pH range (6-12).
  • The probe demonstrates a significant increase in red fluorescence upon interacting with hydrazine and has been successfully implemented for visual testing in water samples and imaging in biological models like HeLa cells and zebrafish.
