Getting breastfeeding started under pandemic visiting restrictions: lessons learned in Germany.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic contact restrictions considerably changed maternal visiting contacts during the time in which breastfeeding is initiated. We wanted to know how maternity ward staff and mothers rated the conditions of starting breastfeeding under contact restrictions.

Methods: In the Breastfeeding in North Rhine-Westphalia (SINA) study, Germany, 2021/22, chief physicians as well as ward staff from 41 (out of 131) maternity hospitals (82 members of the healthcare sector in total) were surveyed by telephone concerning structural and practical conditions for breastfeeding support before and during the pandemic; 192 (out of 426 eligible) mothers answered an online-questionnaire about their breastfeeding experiences at 2 weeks and 2 months after birth.

Methods And Results: The RECOVER III study is an observational, prospective, multicenter, single-arm, postapproval study of patients with acute myocardial infarction with cardiogenic shock undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention with Impella support.

Adherence to recommendations for nutrient supplementation related to pregnancy in Germany.

Supplementation of certain micronutrients is recommended to ensure their adequate supply during pregnancy and lactation. In Germany, this applies particularly to folic acid and iodine. There is no nationwide data on adherence to the supplementation guidelines.

Inundative, Dry-Powder, Inhaled Measles Vaccination to Prevent Deaths of Young Children in War-torn Regions.

Children living in war-torn and geographically remote regions often die from measles due to undervaccination. Protective community immunity could be safely improved through the comprehensive use of small, inexpensive, easy-to-use, dry-powder aerosolized measles vaccination inhalers. Influential local community members could be engaged to provide risk counseling and inform their peers of measles risks to inspire vaccine uptake.

Incentivized self-vaccination for global measles eradication.

Measles-we've become inured to its cruel, insidious impact as it kills over 100,000 children yearly because of suboptimal vaccination coverage. It does not have to be this way. A familiar, safe, exceptionally effective measles vaccine saves lives and permanent, global measles eradication is within reach.

A Chemical Biology Primer for NMR Spectroscopists.

Among structural biology techniques, NMR spectroscopy offers unique capabilities that enable the atomic resolution studies of dynamic and heterogeneous biological systems under physiological and native conditions. Complex biological systems, however, often challenge NMR spectroscopists with their low sensitivity, crowded spectra or large linewidths that reflect their intricate interaction patterns and dynamics. While some of these challenges can be overcome with the development of new spectroscopic approaches, chemical biology can also offer elegant and efficient solutions at the sample preparation stage.

The study of moral judgements often centres on moral dilemmas in which options consistent with deontological perspectives (that is, emphasizing rules, individual rights and duties) are in conflict with options consistent with utilitarian judgements (that is, following the greater good based on consequences). Greene et al. (2009) showed that psychological and situational factors (for example, the intent of the agent or the presence of physical contact between the agent and the victim) can play an important role in moral dilemma judgements (for example, the trolley problem).

The role of breastfeeding promotion in German hospitals for exclusive breastfeeding duration.

Breastfeeding promotion and support in hospitals is expected to have a positive impact on maternal breastfeeding outcomes. The objective of this study is to examine the association between breastfeeding promotion in maternity hospitals in Germany and exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) rates during the first 4 months. Thus, a nationwide cross-sectional web-based survey of breastfeeding promotion was conducted in 103 hospitals.

Breast-feeding promotion in hospitals and prospective breast-feeding rates during the first year of life in two national surveys 1997-1998 and 2017-2019 in Germany.

Objectives: The present study aimed to assess the current state of breast-feeding promotion in hospitals and the prevalence of breast-feeding during the first year of life in Germany and to compare the results with a study 20 years earlier.

Design: In the studies on 'breast-feeding and infant nutrition in Germany' named 'SuSe', a cross-sectional survey in hospitals was combined with a subsequent prospective survey of breast-feeding and infant nutrition during the first year of life (0·5, 2, 4, 6 and 12 months after birth) in mother-infant pairs who were recruited in the hospitals. Written questionnaires and phone calls were used in SuSe I and web-based questionnaires in SuSe II.

Phase I Study of the CD47 Blocker TTI-621 in Patients with Relapsed or Refractory Hematologic Malignancies.

Purpose: TTI-621 (SIRPα-IgG1 Fc) is a novel checkpoint inhibitor that activates antitumor activity by blocking the CD47 "don't eat me" signal. This first-in-human phase I study (NCT02663518) evaluated the safety and activity of TTI-621 in relapsed/refractory (R/R) hematologic malignancies.

is a rod-shaped gram-negative obligate anaerobe; this organism, and other anaerobes, are usually not a part of the culture performed for a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample. To date, four cases of meningitis in adults have been published. We report successful treatment of a case of primary meningitis due to in an otherwise healthy 72-year-old male.

Targeting CD47 in Sézary syndrome with SIRPαFc.

Sézary syndrome (SS), the leukemic variant of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, has limited treatment options and rare occurrences of long-term remission, thus warranting research into new treatment approaches. CD47 has emerged as a promising target for multiple tumor types, but its role in SS remains unknown. Here, we show that CD47 is highly expressed on Sézary cells in the peripheral blood and skin, and the high level of CD47 expression correlates with worse overall survival (OS) in patients with SS.

Cultural Competence and Global Health: Perspectives for Medical Education - Position paper of the GMA Committee on Cultural Competence and Global Health.

Routine medical care in Germany, Austria and Switzerland is being increasingly impacted by the cultural and linguistic diversity of an ever more complex world. Both at home and as part of international student exchanges, medical students are confronted with different ways of thinking and acting in relation to health and disease. Despite an increasing number of courses on cultural competence and global health at German-speaking medical schools, systematic approaches are lacking on how to integrate this topic into medical curricula.

Background: Despite the undeniable benefits, breastfeeding in public has led in the past to controversies that gained a lot of media coverage. For this reason, the attitudes of the general population towards breastfeeding in public and the experiences of mothers who breastfeed in public were examined.

Objective: The objectives were to collect current data on the perception and acceptance of breastfeeding in public.

[Breastfeeding and potential sensory imprinting].

Breastmilk provides well-known nutritional and functional advantages and in addition a greater sensory variety as compared to infant formula. Volatile and soluble sensory components from the mother's diet are transmitted prenatally into the amniotic fluid and postnatally into breastmilk and can be detected by the fetus and infant. Breastfeeding is suggested to serve as a bridge from prenatal flavor experiences to the varied sensory world of complementary feeding and family diet afterwards.

[Monitoring breastfeeding in Germany-the current need for action and perspectives].

Breastfeeding monitoring is understood to be the systematic assessment of current, comprehensive and precise data on breastfeeding rates, breastfeeding behaviour and relevant framework conditions at a national and regional level, with the aim of optimal breastfeeding support. For this purpose, in 2009, the National Breastfeeding Committee in Germany presented an integrative monitoring concept that included different assessment instruments and assessment fields. The hitherto fragmented implementation is still insufficient; in particular, the implementation of longer-term and sustainable concepts within the structures of the healthcare system is still lacking.

Investigation of a Large-Scale Gopher Tortoise ( Gopherus polyphemus) Mortality Event on a Public Conservation Land in Florida, USA.

In August 2015, a gopher tortoise ( Gopherus polyphemus) mortality event was documented on a 40-ha area of Lake Louisa State Park, Lake County, Florida, US. To quantify the extent of the die-off and the seroprevalence of Mycoplasma agassizii and Mycoplasma testudineum, two causative agents of mycoplasmal upper respiratory tract disease (URTD), we conducted a tortoise shell survey on 25 and 26 August 2015 and collected blood samples from live tortoises on 2-4 September 2015 and 1-13 August 2016 within the area of documented mortality. We discovered 94 shells and measured the degree of disarticulation to estimate time since mortality.

TTI-621 (SIRPαFc): A CD47-Blocking Innate Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor with Broad Antitumor Activity and Minimal Erythrocyte Binding.

The ubiquitously expressed transmembrane glycoprotein CD47 delivers an anti-phagocytic (do not eat) signal by binding signal-regulatory protein α (SIRPα) on macrophages. CD47 is overexpressed in cancer cells and its expression is associated with poor clinical outcomes. TTI-621 (SIRPαFc) is a fully human recombinant fusion protein that blocks the CD47-SIRPα axis by binding to human CD47 and enhancing phagocytosis of malignant cells.
