BACKGROUND Compartment syndrome of the forearm has been associated with a variety of etiologies, including fractures, snake bites, complications of certain infections, and, very rarely, spider bites. Loxoscelism is the venom-related clinical manifestation of the bite of spiders of the genus Loxosceles, also called brown or fiddler (violinist) spiders. It manifests locally/regionally with pain, erythema, and edema, with subsequent necrotic plaque formation at the site of the bite.

Computer-Supported Collaborative Design of Standardized Clinical Cases: Algorithm Development and Validation.

Background: The creation of computer-supported collaborative clinical cases is an area of educational research that has been widely studied. However, the reuse of cases and their sharing with other platforms is a problem, as it encapsulates knowledge in isolated platforms without interoperability. This paper proposed a workflow ecosystem for the collaborative design and distribution of clinical cases through web-based computing platforms that (1) allow medical students to create clinical cases collaboratively in a dedicated environment; (2) make it possible to export these clinical cases in terms of the Health Level 7 (HL7) Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) interoperability standard; (3) provide support to transform imported cases into learning object repositories; and (4) use e-learning standards (eg, Instructional Management Systems Content Packaging [IMS-CP] or Sharable Content Object Reference Model [SCORM]) to incorporate this content into widely-used learning management systems (LMSs), letting medical students democratize a valuable knowledge that would otherwise be confined within proprietary platforms.

While immunostaining and imaging techniques have improved to allow for identification of synapses in tissue, analysis and identification of these appositions are not facile, and there has been a lack of tools to accurately identify these appositions.

APOBEC3G (A3G) is a single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) cytosine deaminase that can restrict HIV-1 infection by mutating the viral genome. A3G consists of a non-catalytic N-terminal domain (NTD) and a catalytic C-terminal domain (CTD) connected by a short linker. While the CTD catalyzes cytosine deamination, the NTD is believed to provide additional affinity for ssDNA.

Clinical Feasibility and Airway Deposition of Nebulized Voriconazole in Healthy Horses.

Voriconazole (VRC) is a potential treatment for pneumomycosis in horses. The objectives of this study were to determine if the delivery of Vfend using a Flexineb nebulizer produced clinically significant [VRC] in lower airways. The hypothesis was that [VRC] after delivery by nebulization would be greater in the pulmonary epithelial lining fluid than plasma.

According to the WHO, the poorest and the ethnic minorities are the groups most affected by this indicator. Acute narrow-angle glaucoma induced by topiramate with acute myopia and macular striae: A case report.

We report the case of a 29-year-old epileptic woman who had been on treatment with topiramate 25mg/day for 9 days. She was referred to the Emergency Department due to reduction in far visual acuity (VA) after increasing the dose to 50mg/day two days before. The ocular examination showed bilateral acute angle closure glaucoma (AACG) and macular striae in both eyes (AO) observed by Retinography and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).

Crystal structure of the catalytic domain of HIV-1 restriction factor APOBEC3G in complex with ssDNA.

The human APOBEC3G protein is a cytidine deaminase that generates cytidine to deoxy-uridine mutations in single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), and capable of restricting replication of HIV-1 by generating mutations in viral genome. The mechanism by which APOBEC3G specifically deaminates 5'-CC motifs has remained elusive since structural studies have been hampered due to apparently weak ssDNA binding of the catalytic domain of APOBEC3G. We overcame the problem by generating a highly active variant with higher ssDNA affinity.

Rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor of the fourth ventricle. Two cases report and literature review.

Rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor of the fourth ventricle is a primary central nervous system tumor introduced in the group of glioneuronal tumors in the WHO classification of 2007. Initially it was described around the fourth ventricle, but recently have been published cases in different locations. We present 2cases of this rare tumor, both surgically treated.

Impact of the 2015 El Niño-Southern Oscillation on the Abundance and Foraging Habits of Guadalupe Fur Seals and California Sea Lions from the San Benito Archipelago, Mexico.

The abundance of California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) (CSLs) and Guadalupe fur seals (Arctocephalus philippii townsendi) (GFSs) from the San Benito Archipelago (SBA) was determined through nine monthly surveys in 2014-2015. Assessment of their foraging habits was examined based on the isotopic analysis of pups (maternal indicators) (SIAR/SIBER-R). Environmental variability between 2014 and 2015 was also analyzed, in terms of sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll (Chl-a) concentration.

Subfoveal perfluorocarbon liquid. Removal after three months.

Clinical Case: A case of surgical removal of a subfoveal perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL) bubble that remained trapped inside the subretinal space. PFCL bubble extraction was performed by performing a therapeutic and vacuum PFCL bubble macular retinal detachment.

Discussion: The elapsed time before subfoveal PFCL extraction seems to influence the visual result.

[Sclerochoroidal calcification associated with hypovitaminosis D].

Case Report: A 69 year-old woman was referred for a routine visit, during which funduscopy revealed white-yellow subretinal lesions in the superotemporal mid-periphery of both eyes. A and B scan ultrasound showed hyperechogenic lesions located at scleral and choroidal level. Computed tomography revealed posterolateral sclerochoroidal calcifications.

Chronic angle-closure glaucoma related to paroxetine treatment.

Purpose: To present a unique case of a 33-year-old woman using paroxetine who presented with acute unilateral visual loss due to chronic angle-closure glaucoma.

Methods: Case report.

Results: A 33-year-old women who had been under paroxetine treatment for the past four months presented at the emergency room due to a sudden loss of visual acuity (VA) in the left eye (LE).

[Resistance to cefepime in Enterobacter cloacae isolates from hospitals in Bogotá, Colombia].

Objective: The aim of this research was to detect the presence of genes encoding beta-lactamases which can confer cefepime resistance on Enterobacter cloacae isolates, meaning that this antibiotic may be considered an important therapeutic alternative.

Materials And Methods: 28 E. cloacae isolates collected from 4 hospitals in Bogotá during 2003 were analysed.

[Idiopathic intracranial hypertension in childhood].

Introduction: We present the cases of idiopathic, intracranial hypertension (HII) in children studied in our hospital over the past 15 years (14 cases), reviewing the clinical features, complementary tests, associated causes, treatment and evolution.

Patients And Methods: Diagnosis of HII was based on a modification of Ahlskog's criteria (1982) (the child was sedated to avoid increased cranial pressure due to crying): no focal signs, CSF pressure greater than 200 mm of H2O, normal composition of CSF and normal neuro-imaging findings. Two groups were established according to age.

Objective: Because interruption of pallidal outflow signals by pallidotomy is believed to play an important role in the motor improvement in Parkinson's disease, the anatomical relationship of the two major pallidofugal tracts, namely the ansa lenticularis (AL) and the fasciculus lenticularis (FL) to the Leksell pallidotomy target (LPT) were studied.

Methods: Magnetic resonance (MR) scans of 20 patients with Parkinson's disease were studied. The scans were obtained in the inversion recovery and fast spin echo sequences and viewed in the reverse video mode.
