Child marriages in Senegal: Qualitative study on the perceptions of adolescents in Kaolack and Gossas.

An estimated 650 million girls worldwide are married before their 18th birthday. The phenomenon is recurrent in sub-Saharan Africa with a prevalence of 18% and particularly in Senegal where one in three girls is married before the age of 18, i.e.

Adolescents' accessibility and use of sexual and reproductive health services in Kaolack and Gossas, Senegal.

In Senegal, the needs for care related to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) among adolescents are significant. This study evaluates the accessibility and use of gender-related SRHR services by adolescents in the municipalities of Kaolack and Gossas. It is based on quantitative and qualitative data from 2,263 adolescents in the 2 sites, 84 in-depth individual interviews, 12 focus groups with adolescents and sexual reproductive Health actors, and 4 interviews with key informants.

Development of a maturity assessment tool to evaluate and strengthen National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs).

As dozens of new National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs) were established worldwide in the past decade, and as existing NITAGs continued to play an important role in vaccine policy, global NITAG partners recognized a need for a standardized assessment tool to evaluate and strengthen their functions. This article describes the development of the NITAG Maturity Assessment Tool (NMAT), a stepwise evaluation tool that assesses NITAGs on seven key indicators of structure and process. A draft tool was developed through an iterative, consensus-based process with an expert working group before it was piloted with an economically and geographically diverse convenience sample of NITAGs.

Region-wide assessment of National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs) using the NITAG Maturity Assessment Tool (NMAT) - Experience from the Eastern Mediterranean Region of the World Health Organization, 2023.

National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs) are independent bodies that help improve national immunization programmes in decision making on immunization policy. The new NITAG Maturity Assessment Tool (NMAT) provided an opportunity to conduct a region-wide assessment to improve NITAG capacity and foster institutional growth. We share experience of the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) of the World Health Organization (WHO) in using NMAT and the use of findings to develop improvement plans.

COVID-19 vaccination implementation in 52 African countries: trajectory and implications for future pandemic preparedness.

Introduction: To end the COVID-19 pandemic, the WHO set a goal in 2021 to fully vaccinate 70% of the global population by mid-2022. We projected the COVID-19 vaccination trajectory in 52 African countries and compared the projected to the 'actual' or 'observed' coverage as of December 2022. We also estimated the required vaccination speed needed to have attained the WHO 70% coverage target by December 2022.

The Hidden Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Routine Childhood Immunization Coverage in Cameroon.

: The third round of the global pulse survey demonstrated that the abrupt and rapid progression of the COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted childhood immunization in many countries. Although Cameroon has reported over 120,000 COVID-19 cases, the reported national childhood vaccination coverage during the pandemic seems to have increased compared to that during the pre-COVID-19 period. Indeed, the first dose of the diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis-containing vaccine (DTP-1) coverage increased from 85.

Evidence-informed vaccination decision-making in countries: Progress, challenges and opportunities.

Countries face an increasingly complex vaccination landscape. As well as ever-changing infectious disease epidemiology, the number and diversity of vaccine-preventable diseases, vaccine products, and vaccine technologies continue to increase. To ensure that vaccination decision-making is transparent, country-owned and informed by sound scientific evidence, many countries have established national immunization technical advisory groups (NITAGs) to provide independent expert advice.

Intersectional stigmas and HIV-related outcomes among a cohort of key populations enrolled in stigma mitigation interventions in Senegal.

Objectives: The current study aims to assess longitudinal differences in stigma and HIV outcomes among key populations at risk for and living with HIV.

Design: Key populations enrolled into two parallel prospective cohorts; one for female sex workers and one for sexual and gender minorities (SGMs). Participants were recruited from three urban areas in Senegal; were followed for 24 months; and had the option to participate in an integrated stigma mitigation intervention.

Adherence to ready-to-use food and acceptability of outpatient nutritional therapy in HIV-infected undernourished Senegalese adolescents: research-based recommendations for routine care.

Background: Ready-to-use food (RUF) is increasingly used for nutritional therapy in HIV-infected individuals. However, practical guidance advising nutrition care to HIV-infected adolescents is lacking, so that little is known about the acceptability of such therapy in this vulnerable population. This study assesses the overall acceptability and perception of a RUF-based therapy and risk factors associated with sub-optimal RUF intake in HIV-infected undernourished adolescents in Senegal.

Improving the informed consent process among HIV-infected undisclosed minors participating in a biomedical research: insights from the multicentre nutritional SNACS study in Senegal.

Objectives: Providing research information in a manner accessible to minors participating in biomedical research is a major challenge. Guidance is dramatically lacking regarding best practices for seeking informed consent among undisclosed minors enrolled in HIV-related research. We implemented an improved informed consent process (IICP) and identified factors associated with understanding of the information presented to HIV-infected minors prior to their enrolment in a study.
