Article Synopsis
  • Osteosclerosis (OSC) is an under-researched complication in sickle cell disease (SCD), and this study aimed to assess the prevalence and features of high bone mineral density (BMD) in adult SCD patients.
  • Conducted over nearly a decade, the study included 135 adult SCD patients, finding that 15% had high BMD, particularly among those with certain SCD genotypes (e.g., S/beta).
  • The research concluded that high BMD in SCD is linked to older age and specific genotypes, indicating it may become increasingly common as the patient population ages.
