Synaptic plasticity is a key cellular model for learning, memory and chronic pain. Most previous studies were carried out in rats and mice, and less is known about synaptic plasticity in non-human primates. In the present study, we used integrative experimental approaches to study long-term potentiation (LTP) in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) of adult tree shrews.

Migraines are a common medical condition. From a basic science point of view, the central mechanism for migraine and headache is largely unknown. In the present study, we demonstrate that cortical excitatory transmission is significantly enhanced in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC)-a brain region which is critical for pain perception.

Article Synopsis
  • Ultra-widefield fundus (UWF) imaging offers a 200° view of the retina, helping detect peripheral lesions better than traditional methods, but lacks strong diagnostic capabilities.
  • This study developed an automated model using YOLOX to identify and locate six common peripheral retinal lesions from UWF images, facilitating early screening and rapid diagnosis.
  • The model achieved high accuracy rates (up to 96.64%) and maintained excellent sensitivity and specificity across multiple datasets, indicating its effectiveness in diagnosing retinal lesions.

Long-term potentiation (LTP) is a key cellular mechanism for learning and memory, and recent studies in the hippocampus found that LTP was impaired in aged animals. Previous studies of cortical LTP have focused primarily on the homosynaptic plasticity in adult mice, while fewer studies have looked at heterosynaptic plasticity-such as synaptic tagging in aged mice. In the present study, we investigated synaptic tagging in adult and middle-aged mice's anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) using the 64-channel multielectrode dish (MED64) recording system.

Objective: This study investigated the effects of 12 weeks of specifically designed physical activity intervention on working memory and motor competence in preschool children and explored the correlation between working memory changes and motor competence changes by the intervention.

Methods: Four classes of preschool children were grouped into an intervention group and a control group. Children in the intervention group received a 12-week physical activity intervention, while children in the control group followed their daily routine as usual.

Can mice recognize themselves in a mirror? The answer is unclear. Previous studies have reported that adult mice - when shown itch-like videos - demonstrated itch empathy. However, this was proven to be unreproducible in other studies.

Background: The intelligent diagnosis of thyroid nodules in ultrasound image is an important research issue. Automatically locating the region of interest (ROI) of thyroid nodules and providing pre-diagnosis results can help doctors to diagnose faster and more accurate.

Objectives: This study aims to propose a model, which can detect multiple nodules stably and accurately in order to avoid missed detection and misjudgment.

The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is located in the frontal part of the cingulate cortex, and plays important roles in pain perception and emotion. The thalamocortical pathway is the major sensory input to the ACC. Previous studies have show that several different thalamic nuclei receive projection fibers from spinothalamic tract, that in turn send efferents to the ACC by using neural tracers and optical imaging methods.

Cortical long-term potentiation (LTP) serves as a cellular model for chronic pain. As an important subtype of adenylyl cyclases (ACs), adenylyl cyclase subtype 1 (AC1) is critical for the induction of cortical LTP in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Genetic deletion of AC1 or pharmacological inhibition of AC1 blocked behavioral allodynia in animal models of neuropathic and inflammatory pain.

Long-term potentiation (LTP) is an important molecular mechanism for chronic pain in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a key cortical region for pain perception and emotional regulation. Inhibiting ACC LTP via various manipulations or pharmacological treatments blocks chronic pain. Long-term depression (LTD) is another form of synaptic plasticity in the ACC, which is also proved to be involved in the mechanisms of chronic pain.

Iron is an essential element for crucial biological function; whereas excess iron sedimentation impairs the main functions of tissues or organs. Cumulative researches have shown that the disturbances in iron metabolism, especially iron overload is closely concatenating with bone loss. Nevertheless, the specific process of iron overload-induced apoptosis in osteoblasts has not been thoroughly studied.

Itch contagion has been reported in human when people watch someone scratching in a video. The basic mechanism of contagious itch induced by scratching video is still being investigated. A recent study has reported that adult mice showed itch like responses after watching itch-like video or mice showing itching responses.

Human and animal studies indicate that some brain regions are activated during painful and pleasant situations, such as the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). In the present study, we wanted to determine if some of the same neurons in the ACC may be activated by both pain and pleasure. We labeled neurons activated by two stimuli by using two immediate early genes (IEGs), Arc and Homer1a, and detected the intranuclear transcription of the IEG mRNA in situ.

Innovative scaffold fabrication, angiogenesis promotion, and dynamic tissue culture techniques have been utilized to improve delivery of media into the core of large tissue constructs in tissue engineering. We have developed here an intra-tissue perfusion (ITP) system, which incorporates an array of seven micron-sized needles as a delivery conduit, to improve mass transfer into the core of thick liver tissues slices (>>300 microm mass transport limit). The ITP system improves the uniformity and distribution of media throughout the tissue, resulting in improved cell viability over the static-cultured controls.
