Importance: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative joint disease in aging populations. Knee OA is difficult to cure and requires ongoing management. Thread embedding acupuncture (TEA) is a popular Korean medical treatment for knee OA.

Liver organoids: Current advances and future applications for hepatology.

The creation of self-organizing liver organoids represents a significant, although modest, step toward addressing the ongoing organ shortage crisis in allogeneic liver transplantation. However, researchers have recognized that achieving a fully functional whole liver remains a distant goal, and the original ambition of organoid-based liver generation has been temporarily put on hold. Instead, liver organoids have revolutionized the field of hepatology, extending their influence into various domains of precision and molecular medicine.

Cryo-EM Structure of Human Hyaluronidase PH-20.

PH-20 is a specific type of hyaluronidase that plays a critical role in the fertilization process by facilitating the initial binding of sperm to the glycoprotein layer surrounding the oocyte and subsequently breaking down hyaluronic acid polymers in the cumulus cell layer. PH-20 contains an epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like domain, which may be involved in the recognition of the glycoprotein layer in addition to the catalytic domain. Herein, we report the structure of human PH-20 determined by cryogenic electron microscopy.

Mechanistic Analysis of Peptide Affinity to Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes and Volatile Organic Compounds Using Chemiresistors.

Peptides, due to their diverse and controllable properties, are used as both liquid and gas phase recognition elements for both biological and chemical targets. While it is well understood how binding of a peptide to a biomolecule can be converted into a sensing event, there is not the same mechanistic level of understanding with regard to how peptides modulate the selectivity of semiconductor/conductor-based gas sensors. Notably, a rational, mechanistic study has not yet been performed to correlate peptide properties to the sensor response for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as a function of chemical properties.

Catalytic Aerobic Carbooximation of Alkenes Using Secondary Nitroalkanes as Both α-Nitro Alkyl Radical and Nitrogen Monoxide Sources.

Aerobic nitro-nitrite isomerization of secondary nitroalkanes is postulated to proceed via the intermediacy of the α-nitro alkyl radical, where the corresponding Nef-type products, ketones, and nitrogen monoxide can be obtained as byproducts. To explore the catalytic aerobic carbooximation of alkenes using secondary nitroalkanes, phase-transfer catalysis of KSeCN and TBAI has been developed. The current aerobic carbooximation of alkenes utilizes nitroalkanes as both radical and nitrogen monoxide sources in water without external oxidants and prefunctionalized nitroalkanes.

Phosphatidic Acid Signaling in Modulating Plant Reproduction and Architecture.

Phosphatidic acid (PA) is an important class of signaling lipids involved in various biological processes in plants. Functional characterization of the mutants of PA's metabolizing enzymes coupled with lipidomics and protein-lipid interaction analyses have revealed that PA signaling is involved in plant response to biotic and abiotic stress. Moreover, PA and its metabolizing enzymes have been found to affect various reproductive steps, including gametogenesis, pollen tube growth, self-incompatibility, haploid embryo formation, embryogenesis, and seed development.

Access to Care and the Hispanic Paradox Among Hispanic Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Purpose: Despite the disproportionate impact of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) on Hispanic patients, reported outcomes are limited, particularly among subpopulations. Our study aimed to evaluate outcomes in access to care and survival among racial and ethnic Hispanic subpopulations.

Methods: The National Cancer Database was then utilized to identify patients diagnosed with HCC between 2004 and 2020.

Nasal absorption of oxycodone predicted using a novel computational fluid dynamics-physiologically based pharmacokinetic model.

Oxycodone hydrochloride (HCl) extended release (ER) tablet is an abuse-deterrent formulation that uses a physical barrier to make it more difficult to crush tablets prior to abuse via various routes. A previously conducted in vivo pharmacokinetics (PK) study showed that particle size exhibited significant effects on PK. Here, a computational modeling study using a novel combined computational fluid dynamics and physiologically based PK model was applied to better understand the mechanisms that produce differences in PK according to particle size and formulation type for nasally insufflated oxycodone HCl immediate release (IR) and ER tablets.

Femoral or Radial Secondary Access in TAVR: A Subanalysis From the Multicenter PULSE Registry.

Background: Transradial secondary access (TR-SA) may serve as an alternative to the traditional femoral secondary access (TF-SA) for pigtail placement in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of secondary access-related vascular complications after TR-SA or TF-SA in TAVR.

Methods: The PULSE (Plug or sUture based vascuLar cloSurE after TAVR) registry retrospectively evaluated data of 10,120 patients who underwent transfemoral TAVR at 10 heart centers from 2016 to 2021.

Integrating Hydrogels and Biomedical Plastics via In Situ Physical Entanglements and Covalent Bonding.

Both rigid plastics and soft hydrogels find ample applications in engineering and medicine but bear their own disadvantages that limit their broader applications. Here, a robust adhesion strategy is proposed to integrate highly entangled tough hydrogels and diverse plastics with high interfacial adhesion energy and strength.

A Three-In-One Heptamethine Cyanine Dye Induces Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress and Apoptosis in Colorectal Cancer.

One of the most significant challenges for image-guided cancer-targeted therapy is to develop multifunctional optical contrast agents enabling simultaneous targeting and therapy. Herein, a feasible strategy is based on the incorporation of therapeutic moieties into the non-delocalized structure of polymethine indocyanines, known as the "structure-inherent targeting" concept. By possessing a rigid chloro-cyclohexenyl ring in the heptamethine cyanine backbone, a new type of multifunctional near-infrared fluorescent dye, Ph790H, that targets tumor without the need for additional targeting ligands is synthesized.

Prevalence and outcomes of nonmass lesions detected on screening breast ultrasound based on ultrasound features.

Purpose: To determine how often non-mass lesions are seen in screening breast ultrasounds, and analyze their ultrasound features according to the ultrasound lexicon to find features suggestive of malignant non-mass lesions.

Methods: This study is a single center retrospective study for nonmass lesions on screening breast ultrasound. Among 21,604 patients who underwent screening breast US, there were 279 patients with nonmass lesions.

Enhancing nature's palette through the epigenetic breeding of flower color in chrysanthemum.

Flower color is an important character of ornamental plants and one of the main target traits for variety innovation. We previously identified a CmMYB6 epigenetic allele that affects the flower color in chrysanthemum, and changes in flower color are caused by the DNA methylation level of this gene. However, it is still unknown which DNA methyltransferases are involved in modifying the DNA methylation levels of this gene.

Factors Associated With Medical Expenses Among Long-Term Care Insurance Recipients Aged 65 Years or Older in Korea.

This study examined the factors associated with medical expenses among LTCI (long-term care insurance) recipients in Korea. Secondary data analysis was performed using the 2019 Korea National Health Insurance (KNHI) reimbursement data of I metropolitan city. Data from 52 434 older adults who were LTCI recipients and living in I metropolitan city areas were included.

The dorsal approach to the middle hepatic vein from the hilar plate in laparoscopic hemihepatectomy (with video).

Background: Although laparoscopic hemihepatectomy has gained prominence, one of the critical challenges in this procedure is the approach to the middle hepatic vein (MHV). The MHV, which runs in the midplane of the liver, is situated above the hilar plate and serves as an anatomical landmark in hemihepatectomy. We have introduced dorsal approach to the MHV from the hilar plate in laparoscopic hemihepatectomy under the laparoscopic caudo-dorsal view.

Formyl-methionine-mediated eukaryotic ribosome quality control pathway for cold adaptation.

Protein synthesis in the eukaryotic cytosol can start using both conventional methionine and formyl-methionine (fMet). However, a mechanism, if such exists, for detecting and regulating the incorporation of fMet (instead of Met) during translation, thereby preventing cellular toxicity of nascent fMet-bearing (fMet-) polypeptides, remains unknown. Here, we describe the fMet-mediated ribosome quality control (fMet-RQC) pathway in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Outcomes of Acute Subdural Hematoma in Adults with a GCS Score of 3 : An Analysis from Five Regional Trauma Centers.

Objective: Acute Subdural Hematoma (A-SDH) in patients with a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 3 presents significant challenges in clinical decision-making owing to high mortality rates and the likelihood of severe disability. Here, we analyzed data to assess the number of surgical treatments and overall treatment outcomes for patients with A-SDH admitted in a comatose state and discussed the value of such aggressive surgical interventions based on these findings.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted using data from five regional trauma centers in Korea registered with the Korean Neurotrauma Data Bank System.
