Strategic dam planning and the deployment of decentralized renewable technologies are two elements of the same problem, yet normally addressed in isolation. Here, we show that an integrated view of the power system capacity expansion problem could have transformative effects for Southeast Asia's hydropower plans. We demonstrate that Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia have tangible opportunities for meeting projected electricity demand and CO emission targets with less hydropower than currently planned-options range from halting the construction of all dams in the Lower Mekong to building 82% of the planned ones.

Background: The benefit of probiotics in newborn children in relation to allergy and general morbidity later in life appears to be controversial. Allergic diseases represent an increasingly important health problem worldwide in recent years. This is evident in all age groups.

Objectives: Abdominal pain-related functional gastrointestinal disorders in children include functional dyspepsia, functional abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome, and abdominal migraine. We aimed to evaluate a possible association between functional abdominal pain disorders and Helicobacter pylori infection and faecal calprotectin level.

Methods: Prospective observational study including consecutive children with functional gastrointestinal disorders fulfilling Rome III criteria (cases) and age/sex-matched healthy controls.

The aims of our study were to evaluate plasma levels of gut hormones in children with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in comparison with healthy controls and to correlate plasma concentrations of gut hormones with blood biochemistry, markers of metabolic control and with anthropometric parameters. We measured postprandial levels of specific gut peptide hormones in T1DM children. Amylin, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), ghrelin, leptin, pancreatic polypeptide (PP), and polypeptide YY (PYY) were assessed in 19 T1DM children and 21 healthy reference controls.

Aim: The aim of the study is to evaluate faecal calprotectin (f-CP) in children ≤3 years of age with acute gastroenteritis (AG) as an early predictor of bacterial inflammation.

Methods: We prospectively analysed f-CP levels and diagnostic workup in 107 consecutive children (66 AG, 41 controls).

Results: Children with bacterial AG (BAG) was found to have higher diarrheal frequency (p < 0.

A recently discussed cardiovascular risk factor, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), is known to act as an endogenous inhibitor of endothelial nitric oxide synthase. The aim of this study was to establish 1) the relationship between ADMA and ultrasonographically or biochemically determined endothelial dysfunction in children, and 2) the effect of folate supplementation on these parameters. The study cohort included 32 children with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), 30 with diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM1) and 30 age-matched healthy children as the control group.

Objectives: Our pilot study aimed to determine the effect of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) 308 G-->A promoter single-nucleotide polymorphism in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), its influence on inflammatory activity and the clinical manifestations.

Methods: We obtained genomic DNA from 164 subjects, 82 with long-standing IBD aged 8 to 18 years: 46 with Crohn disease (CD) and 36 with ulcerative colitis (UC). Eighty-two healthy children served as the control population.

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of regular daily consumption of white wine on oxidative stress and cardiovascular risk markers. Forty-two healthy male volunteers consumed 375 ml of white wine daily. Each participant provided three venous blood samples (before wine consumption, following the wine consumption period and again a month later).

Goals: To determine the efficacy of triple therapy supplemented with a specially designed fermented milk product containing specific probiotic Lactobacillus casei (L. casei) DN-114 001 strain on Helicobacter pylori eradication in children.

Background: Lactobacillus species possess in vitro activity against H.

The aim of this study was to observe the effect of folate and antioxidants alone on homocysteine levels and oxidative stress markers, and to evaluate whether their co-administration promotes their effects. One hundred patients with hyperhomocysteinemia were randomized into four equal groups, which were then treated with folate, antioxidants or folate plus antioxidants for 2 months; group IV was a control group. Serum homocysteine, folate and oxidative stress markers were measured before the study, at the end of folate and/or antioxidants administration and 3 months later.

Diabetes mellitus is considered to be one of a rank of free radical diseases. The existence of hyperglycemia produces increased oxidative stress (OS) via non-enzymatic glycation, glucose autoxidation, and alterations in polyol pathway activity with subsequent influences on the whole organism. In childhood, Type 1 diabetes prevails and is characterized by its autoimmune character with progressive destruction of beta cells and lack of insulin in genetically predisposed patients.

Oxidative stress is probably a pathophysiological process leading to disadvantageous outcomes in diabetic pregnancies. We aimed to map a complex of potential markers of oxidative stress in this condition. Diabetic mothers had significantly higher concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in the plasma [TBARS] both before (p<0.

Objective: There is currently no data available in children on possible relationships among Helicobacter pylori, gastric motility and gastric inflammation. This is a prospective study of gastric emptying (GE) in symptomatic children with and without H. pylori who met symptom-based criteria for non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD).
