Street fight videos on the internet may provide information about little known aspects of human physical aggression, but their reliability is unclear. Analyses of 100 dyadic fight videos addressing ethological, game theoretic and sex-differentiated questions derived from research on other animals found that prefight verbalizations or gestural signals of nonaggressive or aggressive intent loosely predicted who would strike first and who would win. The head is the preferred strike target.

Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are immunogenic self-adjuvanting vesicles produced by Gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. While the effects of OMVs on different antigens immune stimulation are not clear. In this study, we constructed recombinant Yersinia pseudotuberculosis ΔlpxL strain, with pBlue-PcrV and pBlue-OprF/I, and then purified ΔlpxL rOMVPcrV (rOMVyp2P)and ΔlpxL rOMVOprF/I (rOMVyp2F) and analyzed its effect on immune response and protection against Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 infection.

Background: Single-sample pathway enrichment analysis is an effective approach for identifying cancer subtypes and pathway biomarkers, facilitating the development of precision medicine. However, the existing approaches focused on investigating the changes in gene expression levels but neglected somatic mutations, which play a crucial role in cancer development.

Findings: In this study, we proposed a novel single-sample mutation-based pathway analysis approach (ssMutPA) to infer individualized pathway activities by integrating somatic mutation data and the protein-protein interaction network.

Background: The spread of COVID-19 has a huge impact on the medical system, affecting the normal order of routine patients, especially obvious effect on the Shenzhen Third People's Hospital as the designated hospital for COVID-19 patients. After the epidemic was loosened in early December 2022, the normal medical order gradually restored in China. How much was the impact on the admission and treatment of emergency trauma patients during and after the epidemic? This study aims to compare the differences between trauma patients admitted to the emergency department during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential macronutrient required for various vital processes in crop growth and development, including signal transduction, CO fixation, and photosynthetic phosphorylation. Phosphate transporters (PHTs) in plants play critical roles in the uptake, distribution, and internal transport of Phosphate (Pi). Among these transporters, the PHT4 family is widely distributed across plant species; however, the specific functions of many members within this family remain to be fully elucidated.

Offshore sediment serves as an important sink for traditional organophosphate esters (TOPEs) originating from terrestrial sources. However, the contamination characteristics of novel OPEs (NOPEs) and their hydrolyzed and hydroxylated transformation products (Di- and OH-OPEs) in marine sediment are still unknown. In this study, 34 OPE-associated contaminants were measured in six offshore sediment cores (71 samples) collected from Eastern China.

Background: Fatty acid binding protein 4 (FABP4) has been shown to increase cardiovascular disease. The FABP4 levels in serum and adipose tissue and the possible regulatory mechanisms during colorectal cancer surgery in elderly patients remain unknown.

Methods: Four hundred elderly patients with colorectal cancer were recruited, 200 underwent laparoscopic surgery (LS) and 200 underwent open surgery (OS).

Dissolved inorganic and organic phosphorus is a major factor in triggering the eutrophication of water bodies. At present, a novel Zr cross-linked sodium alginate encapsulated in Ce-UIO-66 microspheres (Zr-SA/Ce-UIO-66) was prepared and systematically characterized. Its ability for capture of phosphate and glyphosate in their single and binary systems has been investigated comprehensively.

Due to their defined structure and large molecular size, giant molecular acceptors (GMAs) have achieved significant progress in device efficiency and stability for organic solar cells. Unlike the classical synthesis of GMAs by Stille coupling, which still suffers from high cost and lack of environmental sustainability, this work develops three GMAs metal-free catalyzed reactions. By introducing varying quantities of malononitrile groups into the linker, the optoelectric properties of GMAs can be significantly regulated.

Background: Septic lung injury (SLI) is a severe condition with high mortality, and ferroptosis, a form of programmed cell death, is implicated in its pathogenesis. However, the explicit mechanisms underlying this condition remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate and validate key ferroptosis-related genes involved in the pathogenesis of SLI through bioinformatics analysis and experimental validation.

In this paper, the fatigue resistance of a full-scale Steel Catenary Riser (SCR) girth weld is investigated using the Strength-Number of cycles (-) curve method based on weld formation quality and fracture mechanics approaches. The test results, presented in the form of - curves, are superior to the design curve E in BS 7608. Compared with the - curve determined by a resonant bending rig, the analytical fracture mechanics, i.

DNA methylation serves as a powerful biomarker for disease diagnosis and biological age assessment. However, current analytical approaches often rely on linear models that cannot capture the complex, context-dependent nature of methylation regulation. Here we present MethylGPT, a transformer-based foundation model trained on 226,555 (154,063 after QC and deduplication) human methylation profiles spanning diverse tissue types from 5,281 datasets, curated 49,156 CpG sites, and 7.

Channeled modulated polarization imaging technology offers advantages owing to its simple structure and low cost. However, the loss of high-frequency information due to channel crosstalk and the filter demodulation method has consistently hindered the mature application of this technology. We analyzed the data structure of pictures detected using this technology and proposed a demodulation method using hybrid feature modulated autoencoders.

Article Synopsis
  • Single-photon LIDAR technology struggles with 3D reconstruction due to high noise, low accuracy, and slow processing times, making traditional statistical methods insufficient.
  • While CNNs show some improvement over traditional approaches, they fail to effectively capture long-range and global data features necessary for accurate reconstruction.
  • To overcome these challenges, the paper presents a new model using vision transformers and generative adversarial networks, which enhances feature extraction and overall reconstruction quality, demonstrating significant improvements in noisy real-world scenarios.

  • The study investigates how resilience among frontline nurses in China changes over time during public health emergencies, focusing on internal and external factors that influence these changes.
  • It surveyed 258 nurses at three points (2020 and 2022) using various resilience and coping assessment tools, finding three distinct resilience categories: fragile, general, and high resilience.
  • Results indicate that support from hospital management and personal factors like emotional regulation are essential for maintaining resilience, highlighting the need for early interventions and ongoing support to aid nurses' mental health.

Antibiotic resistance genes are primarily spread through horizontal gene transfer in aquatic environments. Bisphenols, which are widely used in industry, are pervasive contaminants in such environments. This study investigated how environmentally relevant concentrations of bisphenol A and its substitute (bisphenol S, Bisphenol AP and Bisphenol AF) affect the spread of antibiotic resistance genes among Escherichia coli.

Objective: The aim was to investigate the relationship between metabolic indices and abnormal bone mass (ABM), analyse the association between osteoprotegerin (OPG) gene mutations and ABM, and explore the interaction effect of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and OPG gene mutations on bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women to provide a new supplementary index and a reliable basis for the early identification of osteoporosis (OP) in postmenopausal women in the clinical setting.

Methods: Postmenopausal women hospitalized within the Department of Endocrinology of the First Affiliated Sanatorium of Shihezi University from June 2021 to March 2023 were retrospectively analysed, and the bone mineral density of lumbar vertebrae 1-4 (BMD (L1-4)) of the studied subjects was measured once via twin-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The studied subjects were divided into a normal bone mass (NBM) group and an ABM group according to their bone mineral density, and the general data of the studied subjects were recorded once.
