Background: Although active aging is widely accepted and applied in various countries, research on active aging has predominantly focused on environmental interventions, often overlooking the autonomy of older people. This study addresses this gap by using group psychological counseling technique to implement growth mindset interventions, aiming to stimulate older people's autonomy and foster their active aging behaviors.

Methods: This study employs a randomized controlled trial design with two groups: an autonomous intervention group and a usual control group.

Preservation of porcine semen is essential for artificial insemination and genetic improvement in pig breeding programs. However, the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lower levels of protein phosphorylation emerge as two challenges during semen preservation. Inspired by the innate ligand-receptor binding biofunction of dopamine, herein, a dual-task nano-protectant that combines ROS-scavenging and protein phosphorylation-regulating properties via incorporating the natural antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) into polydopamine nanoparticles (EGCG@PDA NPs) was proposed to enhance the quality of pig semen during storage at 4 ℃.

Riparian zones, which are critical interfaces between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, are essential for biodiversity, water quality, and landscape stability but are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic activities. The Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia, the riparian zones of which are highly affected by humans, however, they are less studied in terms of pollution change and distribution, which hinders efficient eco-environmental management. This study explored land use and nitrogen and phosphorus non-point source pollution variations in the middle and lower Yangtze River riparian zones from 1995 to 2015 and identified critical risky segments as management priorities.

Background: The fear of pain (FOP) and fear avoidance belief (FAB) play a crucial role in the occurrence and development of chronic pain. However, the dynamics of these factors in postsurgical pain appear to differ, with the FOP often learned from others rather than directly caused by painful experiences. Psychological resilience refers to an individual's capacity to adapt effectively to adversity, challenges, and threats, and may play a significant role in overcoming the FOP and avoidance behavior.

Type III interferons (IFNs) primarily act on epithelial cells and protect against virus infection of the mucosa, whereas type I IFNs act more systemically. To date, it has been unknown which epithelial subtypes in the upper airways, the primary site for initial infection for most respiratory viruses, primarily rely on type III IFN or type I IFNs for antiviral protection. To address this question, we performed a single-cell transcriptomics analysis of the epithelial IFN-mediated response focusing on the upper airways of mice.

Undifferentiated spermatogonia (Undiff-SPG) plays a critical role in maintaining continual spermatogenesis. However, the toxic effects and molecular mechanisms of maternal exposure to nanoplastics on offspring Undiff-SPG remain elusive. Here, we utilized a multiomics combined cytomorphological approach to explore the reproductive toxicity and mechanisms of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) on offspring Undiff-SPG in mice after maternal exposure.

Climate change, population growth, and agricultural intensification are increasing nitrogen (N) inputs, while driving the loss of inland water bodies that filter excess N. However, the interplay between N inputs and water body dynamics, and its implications for water quality remain poorly understood. Analyzing data from 1995 to 2015 across China, here, we find a 71% reduction in the area of small (<10 m) water bodies (SWB), primarily in high-N-input agricultural regions.

Background And Objective: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the lower limbs is a critical global vascular disease. Accurately assessing and predicting the efficacy of DVT treatment remains a significant challenge due to a lack of understanding of the mechanisms by which the level of patient-specific embolization and the rate of drug injection affect thrombolytic therapy.

Methods: In this study, we used the computed tomographic venography (CTV) clinical method to obtain patient-specific parameters, and the flow-solid interaction (FSI) method combined with biochemical response modeling of thrombolysis to analyze patient-specific hemodynamic and biomechanical characteristics and to quantitatively assess the effects of three vessel embolism levels (VEL) versus two drug injection rates (DIR) on bifurcated femoral venous thrombolytic therapy.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a natural antioxidant, plays a vital role in modulating sperm function, yet its protective impact on boar spermatozoa during liquid preservation at 4 °C remains elusive. This study aimed to investigate the beneficial effects of EGCG on boar semen preservation, and elucidate the potential mechanism. Multiple parameters including sperm quality, anti-oxidative status, protein phosphorylation levels, membrane receptor and cyclic adenosine monophosphate/protein kinase A (cAMP/PKA) signaling pathways were analyzed using computer-assisted semen analysis system, Western blot and molecular docking techniques.

Objective: Cyclic tensile stress (CTS) is known to induce osteogenesis of periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs), in which the molecular mechanism remains to be elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the role of the mechanosensitive calcium channel Piezo1 in the osteogenesis of PDLCs under tensile strain, as well as the signal regulation of the TAZ-Cbfα1 pathway in this process.

Design: PDLCs were isolated from periodontal ligament tissues and subjected to CTS.

Article Synopsis
  • The NLRP3 inflammasome is crucial in inflammatory diseases, and its activation is influenced by mitochondrial damage and oxidative stress.
  • The study shows that Nepetin (Nep), a natural flavonoid, enhances the process of mitophagy and inhibits NLRP3 inflammasome activation in macrophages, showcasing its antioxidant effects.
  • In mice with systemic inflammation or obesity, Nep improved survival, reduced organ damage, and lowered inflammation, supporting its potential as a therapeutic anti-inflammatory agent.

  • The study explores how dispositional mindfulness (DM) affects prosocial behavior across different cultures, focusing on the roles of empathy dimensions and cultural backgrounds.
  • It involved 683 university students from China and Indonesia, who completed various scales to measure mindfulness, empathy, and altruism, with analysis methods used to examine mediation and moderation.
  • Results showed that Chinese participants displayed higher DM levels and that empathy dimensions like perspective taking and empathic concern mediated the relationship between DM and prosocial behavior, particularly toward family, friends, and strangers, with cultural differences influencing these effects.

This study investigates the differences in peripheral blood parameters between patients with non-neurosyphilis and neurosyphilis, aiming to identify potential serum biomarkers to predict the occurrence of neurosyphilis and avoid unnecessary lumbar punctures. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 110 HIV-negative syphilis patients in this study. We found that the serum homocysteine (Hcy) levels in the non-neurosyphilis group, asymptomatic neurosyphilis group, and symptomatic neurosyphilis group were 12.

Cancer stem cells aggregate to form clusters, which have enhanced stem-like properties and metastasis potential. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the formation of cancer stem cell cluster-like structures with acquisition of stronger invasion and metastasis abilities remain unclear. Micropapillary carcinoma (MPC) is a subpopulation of small, merulioid, inverted, nonfibrous vascular clusters floating in the stroma present in a range of solid malignant tumors and characterized by frequent vascular/lymphatic vessel invasion and lymph node metastasis.
