Objectives: The application of rifaximin, a non-absorbable antibiotic, in hepatic encephalopathy (HE) has been well established; however, its effect on other complications in cirrhotic patients with previous gastroesophageal variceal bleeding (GEVB) remains unclear. Therefore, we performed a pilot randomized controlled trial aiming to evaluate the impact of rifaximin on cirrhosis-related complications and changes in gastric microbiota.

Methods: Eighty cirrhotic patients who received prophylactic endoscopic treatment for variceal rebleeding were randomly assigned to the control or rifaximin treatment group (rifaximin 400 mg twice daily for 8 weeks).

Introduction: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is used for treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (MDD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but there are few studies on patient outcomes in Southeast Asia. In this study, we describe the clinical profile and outcome of patients with MDD and OCD treated with rTMS in Singapore.

Method: A naturalistic retrospective study of 71 patients (inpatient and outpatient) who received rTMS treatment between June 2018 and April 2023 was conducted.

Background: The prognostic association between dysnatremia and outcomes in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is not well understood. Given hypernatremia is associated with poor outcomes in critical illness and hyponatremia may exacerbate cerebral edema, we hypothesized that dysnatremia on OHCA hospital admission would be associated with worse neurological outcomes.

Methods: We studied adults (≥19 years) with non-traumatic OHCA between 2009 and 2016 who were enrolled in the British Columbia Cardiac Arrest Registry and survived to hospital admission at 2 quaternary urban hospitals.

Commercial carriers have been used to prepare monolithic NaBH hydrolytic catalysts, but the fixed structure and material limit the application scope and design freedom. Herein, the RuO-CoP catalyst is coated on the surface of fibrous sepiolite (RuO-CoP@aSep) by in-situ deposition, annealing in air and phosphating, which is constructed into the aerogel with cellulose nanofiber (CNF) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by freeze drying process. The hydrogen generation rate (HGR) of RuO-CoP@aSep increases from 3655 to 10713mLming by adjusting the mass ratio of cobalt to ruthenium in RuO-CoP.

A tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA)-functionalized nano-FeO magnetic composite material (nFeO@TEPA) was synthesized by a facile one-pot solvothermal method. It was characterized by elementary analysis (EA), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The results show that the nFeO@TEPA has an average size of ∼20 nm, with a saturation magnetization intensity of 48.

Human genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have shown that genetic variation at >130 gene loci is associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D). We asked if the expression of the candidate T2D-associated genes within these loci is regulated by a common locus in pancreatic islets. Using an obese F2 mouse intercross segregating for T2D, we show that the expression of ~40% of the T2D-associated genes is linked to a broad region on mouse chromosome (Chr) 2.
