A pytochemical study on the constituents of the roots of Symphyotrichum subulatum led to the isolation of three new compounds including two diacetylenes, asterynes A (1) and B (2), and (E)-4-(3-acetoxyprop-1-enyl)-2-methoxyphenyl (S)-2-methylbutanoate (3) along with twelve known compounds. Their structures were elucidated with spectroscopic analyses. Compound 3 showed anti-inflammatory activity on LPS-induced NO production with an EC50 value of 15.

The antimicrobial properties of chitosan, a derivative of chitin, were investigated in the solid and liquid culture against bacteria associated with waterborne disease in order to assess the potential for using chitosan as a natural disinfectant. Six strains which included three gram-negative and three gram-positive bacteria were studied. The effects of the deacetylation degree, concentration, and molecular weight of chitosan on antibacterial activities were assessed.

Bioassay-directed fractionation of an ethanolic extract of stems of Vernonia cinerea has resulted in the isolation of two novel sesquiterpene lactones, vernolide-A and -B. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis. Biological evaluation showed that vernolide-A demonstrated potent cytotoxicity against human KB, DLD-1, NCI-661, and Hela tumor cell lines (ED(50)=0.

Bioassay-directed fractionation of extract of Arnebia euchroma led to the isolation of alkannin (1), shikonin (2), and their derivatives (3-8) as the active principles against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). The stereochemistry of alpha-methylbutyryl alkannin (8) is revealed for the first time, and the antimicrobial activity of 8 was compared with its corresponding diastereomer (9). The derivatives 3-9 showed stronger anti-MRSA activity [minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranged from 1.

A novel C-methylated biflavone, taiwanhomoflavone-B (1), together with known compounds, 7,4',7"-tri-O-methylamentoflavone, 6-C-methylnaringenin and apigenin-7-O-beta-glucoside were isolated from an ethanolic extract of Cephalotaxus wilsoniana. The structure of 1 was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis. Taiwanhomoflavone-B is cytotoxic with ED(50) values of 3.

A series of 4-(cyclic amido)-2H-naphtho[1,2-b]pyrans related to cromakalim (1) has been prepared and their vasorelaxant activities on isolated rat thoracic aorta precontracted with phenylephrine have been evaluated. The relaxant mechanism of 3a was found not through ATP-sensitive K(+) channels as cromakalim, but through opening voltage-sensitive K(+) channels.
