Race and Superfund site remediation.

Superfund is a federal program established in 1980 to manage the cleanup of hazardous waste sites across the United States. Given the health and economic costs borne by people living near these sites, any demographic disparities within the Superfund program are issues of environmental justice. We investigate whether racial demographics local to a Superfund site are associated with its cleanup status, and if so, how.

Comparative study of the interaction of some meso-substituted anionic cyanine dyes with human serum albumin.

Spectral-fluorescent properties of the meso-substituted anionic cyanine dye 3,3'-di-(γ-sulfopropyl)-4,5,4',5'-dibenzo-9-methylthiacarbocyanine betaine (DMC) were studied in solutions and in the presence of human serum albumin (HSA). The properties of DMC were compared with those of the previously studied meso-substituted anionic dyes 3,3'-di(γ-sulfopropyl)-4,5,4',5'-dibenzo-9-ethylthiacarbocyanine betaine (DEC), 3,3'-di-(γ-sulfopropyl)-9-methylthiacarbocyanine betaine (MTC) and 3,3'-di-(γ-sulfopropyl)-5,5'-diphenyl-9-ethyloxacarbocyanine betaine (OCC), which were studied here in more detail. In aqueous solutions, DMC, like DEC, is prone to dimerization; it also forms H- and J-aggregates.

[Hemostasis in influenza and acute respiratory viral infections in the middle-aged and elderly].

Hemostasis was examined over time in 168 patients with influenza and ARVI. There were 53 elderly patients, 54 senile patients and 4 long-livers. 57 patients under 60 years made up a reference group.

[Hemostatic changes in various clinical courses of influenza].

Data are given on the changes in the hemostatic system in 42 patients with uncomplicated influenza and in complications (pneumonia, bronchitis, aggravation of ischemic heart disease). In the acute period of the disease they were characterized by hypercoagulation which was most pronounced in patients with influenza complicated by pneumonia. In cases of aggravation of ischemic heart disease functional platelet activity during convalescence decreases but the plasma link of hemostasis remains activated and fibrinolytic blood activity inhibited.

[Pathogenesis and surgical tactics in the extrahepatic form of portal hypertension in children].

The correlation analysis of different parameters of the oxygen regimen of the liver, its blood circulation and angioarchitectonics were used in 44 patients in order to reveal different ways of the compensation of blood flow depending on the form of blockade (in thrombosis of the portal vein--at the expense of the hepatic artery, in its malformation--at the expense of the formation of porto-portal collaterals). The operation of choice is thought to be gastrotomy with ligation of varicose veins of the stomach and esophagus from the side of mucosa. It was used in 110 patients and in 88% of the cases recurrent bleedings were prevented for the period up to 15-20 years.

[Combined morphologic evaluation of the efficacy of progestin therapy of primary endometrial cancer].

A complex morphologic procedure for evaluating the effect of synthetic progestin treatment in 136 cases of primary endometrial cancer was analysed. Changes in structural and functional characteristics of tumor testifying to the elevated degree of cell differentiation were observed in 89.7 +/- 6.

[Effect of Vitalact humanized milk varying in carbohydrate composition on the development of intestinal bifid flora in nursing infants].

[Hormonal transformation characteristics of endometrial adenoacanthoma in the process of progestin treatment].

Changes in the histological structure of endometrial adenoacanthoma, as a result of treatment with 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone capronate, are discussed. The biopsy and resected material obtained from 11 patients was studied. It was shown that hormono-therapy results in an increased structural and functional differentiation of the glandular and squamous-cell components of tumor.
