We studied the relationship between anemia and chronic diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract in patients with CHD. Patients with CHD and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) had the lowest hemoglobin levels and erythrocyte counts in the absence of pronounced independent effect of GERD. This finding suggests common pathogenesis of CHD, GERD and anemia in patients with coronary problems.

The Polycomb (PcG) and Trithorax (TrxG) group proteins are essential for development in all multicellular organisms. Mutations of the PcG and TrxG genes act as early embryonic lethals, while their overexpression correlates with malignancies. Comparative genome analysis showed that PcG and TrxG form a binary regulatory system that functions as an epigenetic rheostat to determine the threshold levels of extracellular signals affecting the expression levels of key developmental genes.

From bioethics and contemporary medical legislation viewpoints, the authors consider a topic of periodic medical examinations and possibility of concordance between doctor and patient. Opinion is that in order to gain concordance and higher efficiency of the examinations, the doctor should separate occupational examination function from medical function.

Purpose: To determine interrelationship between lower limb varicosity, the clinical grade of non-differentiated dysplasia of the connective tissue and atrial fibrillation in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD).

Material And Methods: Altogether 156 coronary patients were examined. Persistent atrial fibrillation was present in 58 and chronic in 38 patients.

The influence of tumor necrosis factor a (TNF-alpha) and media, conditioned by activated macrophages and lymphocytes and containing a complex of biologically active compounds (including cytokines), on the parameters of lipid metabolism in macrophages was studied. The addition of recombinant TNF-alpha and immunocompetent cell-conditioned media to mouse peritoneal macrophages culture stimulated labelled oleate incorporation into cholesterol esters and triglycerides, as well as labelled glycerine incorporation into cholesterol esters, but inhibited labelled cholesterol incorporation into cholesterol esters. One of the mechanisms of the influence of activated immunocompetent cells on cholesterol metabolism in macrophages was, supposedly, the stimulation of sphigmomyelinase activity by a complex of anti-inflammatory cytokines produced by these cells on their activation.

The specific features of myocardial repolarizing processes and heart rate variability (HRV) were studied in 67 patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) concurrent with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) (a study group), in 72 patients with CHD and in 46 patients with GERD (comparison groups). Patients with concomitant diseases showed a significant asynchronism of repolarizing processes and decreased HRV. A relationship was established between the presence and magnitude of inflammatory lower esophageal third changes, and the severity of myocardial repolarizing processes, and decreased HRV in patients with CHD + GERD.

Modification of Drosophila transformation vector pCaSper3 with the P element was used to construct a new vector, pFRT. The vector contains two tandem FRT sites flanked with several unique restriction sites and separated by a polylinker of five restriction sites, and allows easy cloning of DNA fragments between or close to the FRT sites. FRT-mediated excision of DNA sequences cloned between the FRT sites was demonstrated in vivo.

We investigated the course of myocardial repolarization processes and cardiac rate disturbances in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) combined with ischemic heart disease (IHD). It was established that among patients with IHD GERD is revealed more often in patients with unstable angina. Asynchronism of myocardial repolarization processes is much higher in patients with combined pathology than in patients with GERD or IHD only, which indicates a higher risk of fatal arrhythmias and cardiac deaths in patients of this group.

In this study we investigated the effects of zymosan and prodigiozan, the macrophage stimulators, and GdCl3, a macrophage inhibitor, on blood lipoprotein composition, activities of liver cholesterly ester (CE) metabolising enzymes, incorporation of [14C]cholesterol (C) into bile acids and accumulation and synthesis of CE in peritoneal macrophages (PM) of rats fed with C-enriched diet for 7 days. The increase of number of phagocyte cells quantity in liver and blood colony-stimulating activity in rats pretreated with intravenous injection of zymosan and prodigiozan was accompanied by reduced C content in blood low density and very low density lipoproteins (LDL and VLDL), increase of liver lysosomal CE hydrolase activity (without change of acyl-CoA:C acyltransferase and cytoplasmatic CE hydrolase activities) and incorporation of labeled C into bile acids and decrease of CE formation and accumulation in PM in rats with hypercholesterolemia. In contrast, reduction of phagocyte population in liver caused by intravenous injection of GdCl3 was accompanied by enhancement of C and CE level in blood LDL and VLDL and decrease of lysosomal CE hydrolase activity and incorporation of C into bile acids in liver of C-feeding rats.

Allelic polymorphism at a hypervariable locus mapped to the 5'-region of the gene cluster encoding JH segments of human immunoglobulin heavy chain H (IgH-VNTR) was typed in 462 unrelated individuals living in the Urals, Siberia, and Northern Kazakhstan. Molecular characteristics of the three previously unknown IgH-VNTR alleles is presented. The observed genotype frequencies were concordant with those expected under the Hardy-Weinberg distribution.

Using electron microscopic (EM) data on the formation of a novel band from the P-element material after its insertion in the interband and the procedure of P-target rescue, DNA interband regions 3A5/A6, and 60E8-9/E10 of Drosophila melanogaster polytene chromosomes were cloned and sequenced. EM analysis of the 3C region have shown that the formation of the full-size 3C5-6/C7 interband requires a 880-bp DNA sequences removed by deletion Df(1)faswb. A comparison of DNA sequences of six bands, two of which were obtained in the present work and four were described earlier, demonstrated the uniqueness of each of them in the Drosophila genome and heterogeneity of their molecular organization.

This study was aimed at investigation of a relationship between the parameters of hypoxia and platelet function and the antiaggregation activity of the vascular wall in patients with acute coronary failure. Seventy-four patients aged 31 to 78 with unstable angina were examined. Prior to the treatment capillary and venous blood gases, activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, levels of malonic dialdehyde and diene conjugates, and red cell peroxide resistance were measured.

In the period from Jan. 1988 to Jan. 1991 operations for the formation of an aortocoronary shunt were carried out in 437 patients at the Department of Combined Affections of the Coronary and Peripheral Arteries, Bakulev Research Institute.

Since January 1988 till June 1990 145 patients with combined coronary and vascular pathology have been operated on. Concomitant damage of aortic arch branches was observed in 54 patients (37.2%), and aortocoronary bypass surgery was performed in 40 patients without correction of the carotid vascular bed pathology.

In rats with CCl4-induced liver cirrhosis the clearance rate of colloid carbon particles was more than 2 times lower than in control animals. Simultaneously the uptake capacity of liver Kupffer calls falls. The number of phagocytizing liver macrophages decreased.
