The interface between magnetic material and superconductors has long been predicted to host unconventional superconductivity, such as spin-triplet pairing and topological nontrivial pairing state, particularly when spin-orbital coupling (SOC) is incorporated. To identify these unconventional pairing states, fabricating homogenous heterostructures that contain such various properties are preferred but often challenging. Here, we synthesized a trilayer-type van der Waals heterostructure of MnTe/BiTe/Fe(Te, Se), which combined s-wave superconductivity, thickness-dependent magnetism, and strong SOC.

Article Synopsis
  • In itinerant magnetic systems, a spin density wave (SDW) can be triggered by electron interactions and Fermi surface nesting, but its relationship with charge density waves (CDW) is not fully understood.
  • Using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy, researchers observed long-range spin modulation on Cr(001) surface that aligns with the known SDW of bulk Cr, showing a 6.0 nm period and anti-phase behavior between planes.
  • The study reveals a coexisting CDW with half the period of the SDW, indicating strong correlation between the two and suggesting that the CDW may be influenced by the SDW, along with an unusual density-of-states behavior below a specific energy level.
