Purpose: In the care for oesophageal cancer, symptom assessment was mainly carried out from the perspective of the total score using scales, which ignored individual differences in symptom experience among patients. To provide personalized symptom management, individual differences among patients with oesophageal cancer warranted further investigation. The objective was to identify the different symptom profiles of patients after oesophagectomy and examine the risk factors affecting the symptom profiles.

In this work, the functional activities including α-glucosidase, α-amylase, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity, and antioxidant activity of mixed grains (mung beans, cowpeas, and quinoa) fermented with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SY07 were investigated. The volatile flavor of the mixed grains collected every 12 h during 72 h-fermentation were further detected as well. The inhibition on α-glucosidase and α-amylase reached up to 89.

The Duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV) was first reported in China in 2010 and has since caused substantial economic losses in the poultry breeding industry. In the autumn of 2022, an outbreak of an infectious disease resembling DTMUV was reported in Guangdong Province, China, which caused significantly high mortality in goose embryos, and decreased egg production. This study identified one strain of the new subgenotype 3 of DTMUV, designated as DTMUV GDZQ2022, responsible for these effects.

Purpose: This study investigated whether professional identity predicts learning burnout among Chinese nursing students, and whether resilience moderates this relationship.

Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 635 students from a nursing college at a medical university in Hefei, China. Data were collected using the professional identity questionnaire, learning burnout scale for college students, and 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale.

Equid herpesvirus type 8 (EqHV-8) is known to cause respiratory disease and miscarriage in horses and donkeys, which is a major problem for the equine farming industry. However, there are currently limited vaccines or drugs available to effectively treat EqHV-8 infection. Therefore, it is crucial to develop new antiviral approaches to prevent potential pandemics caused by EqHV-8.

A novel brominated flame retardant decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) poses a potential threat to animals, but its effects on cephalopods remain unknown. In this study, Amphioctopus fangsiao, a common octopus in China, was exposed to DBDPE (0, 1, 50, 100, 300 μg/L) for 28 days. Chemical analysis revealed that the digestive gland bore a greater burden of DBDPE compared with other tissues.

Acute radiation esophagitis (ARE) is a common complication in patients with esophageal cancer undergoing radiotherapy. Therefore, it is important to construct an effective ARE risk-prediction model for clinical treatment. The present study performed a retrospective analysis of 225 patients with esophageal cancer who received radiotherapy at the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University (Hefei, China) from January 2018 to December 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • Quercetin, a plant flavonoid with known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, may pose a risk of heart-related toxicities, particularly by inhibiting hERG currents which could lead to serious cardiac arrhythmias.
  • The study utilized patch clamp techniques, molecular docking, and biochemical analyses to examine how quercetin affects hERG channel behavior and its degradation pathway.
  • Results indicated that quercetin binds to a specific amino acid in the hERG channel, leading to increased degradation and significantly prolonging action potential duration in heart cells, highlighting its potential dangers in a therapeutic context.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute kidney injury (AKI) significantly raises the risk of in-hospital mortality in cirrhotic patients, highlighting the need for effective early prognosis prediction.
  • Researchers developed the PHM-CPA model using machine learning techniques to predict in-hospital mortality risk based on data from cirrhotic patients with AKI, validating it against multiple datasets.
  • The PHM-CPA model outperformed traditional logistic regression models and 25 previously reported models, demonstrating its effectiveness in predicting mortality using common clinical variables.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) and classical swine fever virus (CSFV) are both economically important pathogens threatening the pig industry in many countries. The triple-gene-deleted variant of PRV, herein referred to as rPRVTJ-delgE/gI/TK, has exhibited pronounced efficacy and safety profiles. This underscores its viability as a prospective vaccine vector.

Article Synopsis
  • Equine breeding significantly contributes to the economic development in various countries, particularly experiencing rapid growth in China, but large-scale donkey farms are struggling with high pregnancy loss rates.
  • There is a lack of systematic research on abortion causes in equine breeding, which include both infectious agents like viruses and bacteria, and non-infectious factors such as transportation stress and hormonal issues.
  • This review highlights the need for early detection and management of the causes of pregnancy losses in equines while stressing the importance of ongoing research and effective control measures to mitigate this issue.

Introduction: Observational investigations have examined the impact of glucosamine use on the risk of cancer and non-neoplastic diseases. However, the findings from these studies face limitations arising from confounding variables, reverse causation, and conflicting reports. Consequently, the establishment of a causal relationship between habitual glucosamine consumption and the risk of cancer and non-neoplastic diseases necessitates further investigation.
