Siderophores are a class of small molecules renowned for their high iron binding capacity, essential for all life forms requiring iron. This article provides a detailed review of the diverse classifications, and biosynthetic pathways of siderophores, with a particular emphasis on siderophores synthesized via nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) and non-NRPS pathways. We further explore the secretion mechanisms of siderophores in microbes and plants, and their role in regulating bioavailable iron levels.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) in a grass species from alkaline grasslands in eastern Asia, highlighting its ability to produce root exudates that suppress nitrification in nitrogen-limited environments.
  • Results showed that this grass had a strong BNI capacity, reducing soil nitrification by 72.44%, outperforming a common nitrification inhibitor (DCD).
  • Additionally, the research revealed that the grass's BNI effects not only support its nutrient needs but also help it adapt to alkaline conditions, showing that its regulatory role is more significant than its nutritional function in such environments.

As functional nanomaterials with simulating enzyme-like properties, nanozymes can not only overcome the inherent limitations of natural enzymes in terms of stability and preparation cost but also possess design, versatility, maneuverability, and applicability of nanomaterials. Therefore, they can be combined with other materials to form composite nanomaterials with superior performance, which has garnered considerable attention. Carbon dots (CDs) are an ideal choice for these composite materials due to their unique physical and chemical properties, such as excellent water dispersion, stable chemical inertness, high photobleaching resistance, and superior surface engineering.
