Previously, we reported that transplantation of regeneration-associated cells (RACs) via the ipsilateral external carotid artery reduced stroke volume in mice with permanent occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCA). However, intracarotid arterial transplantation is invasive and requires skill, and severe complications may occur, such as thromboembolism, infection, and decreased cerebral blood flow. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of intravenous injection of RACs in reducing stroke volume and increasing anti-inflammatory and angiogenic factors in mice with focal cerebral ischemia.

Introduction: Dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease with various neurological manifestations. Corneal endothelial degeneration and optic atrophy have been reported separately; however, there are no reports of corneal endothelial degeneration with optic atrophy.

Cases: Herein, we present four related patients with DRPLA: two patients (69-year-old woman and 80-year-old man) who exhibited both corneal endothelial degeneration and optic atrophy and another two (49- and 51-year-old women, respectively) who exhibited only corneal endothelial degeneration.

Article Synopsis
  • * The accumulation of GlucA might be caused by genetic variations in the aldo-keto reductase family one member A1 (AKR1A1) enzyme, which is responsible for its reduction.
  • * Researchers discovered a specific genetic variant (c.753G > A) associated with schizophrenia, leading to a dysfunctional AKR1A1 protein, reduced enzyme activity, and higher GlucA levels, potentially contributing to treatment-resistant forms of the illness.

Objective: Stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) is a comorbidity of ischemic stroke related to clinical outcomes. Early enteral nutrition (EEN; within 48 hours) reduces the incidence of infection and length of intensive care unit (ICU)/hospital stay. The relationship between EEN and critical care outcomes, including SAP, in patients with ischemic stroke has been insufficiently studied.

Background And Aim: We determined to investigate the incidence and clinical impact of new cerebral microbleeds after intravenous thrombolysis in patients with acute stroke.

Methods: The THAWS was a multicenter, randomized trial to study the efficacy and safety of intravenous thrombolysis with alteplase in patients with wake-up stroke or unknown onset stroke. Prescheduled T2*-weighted imaging assessed cerebral microbleeds at three time points: baseline, 22-36 h, and 7-14 days.

Previously, we identified a subpopulation of schizophrenia (SCZ) showing increased levels of plasma pentosidine, a marker of glycation and oxidative stress. However, its causative genetic factors remain largely unknown. Recently, it has been suggested that dysregulated posttranslational modification by copy number variable microRNAs (CNV-miRNAs) may contribute to the etiology of SCZ.

Advanced glycation end products play a key role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Cognitive impairment is one of the central features of schizophrenia; however, the association between advanced glycation end products and cognitive impairment remains unknown. This study investigated whether advanced glycation end products affect the cognitive domain in patients with schizophrenia.

Objective: Despite the high frequency of depression in the first year following stroke, few studies have predicted risk of depression after the acute and subacute stroke periods. The aim of this study was to identify, in the acute and subacute periods, measures that would predict major depression during the first year after stroke.

Methods: Study subjects were inpatients with ischemic stroke aged 20-85 years within 6 weeks of onset.

Background and Purpose- We aimed to compare outcomes of ischemic stroke patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation between earlier and later initiation of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) after stroke onset. Methods- From data for 1192 nonvalvular atrial fibrillation patients with acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack in a prospective, multicenter, observational study, patients who started DOACs during acute hospitalization were included and divided into 2 groups according to a median day of DOAC initiation after onset. Outcomes included stroke or systemic embolism, major bleeding, and death at 3 months, as well as those at 2 years.

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is well known to be caused by insufficient cerebral vascular formation. However, the essential pathogenesis has not yet been identified. Using our recently developed technique of generating vasculogenic and anti-inflammatory cultures, we investigated endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) expansion and differentiation under the cytokine milieu generated by the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNCs) of the operated and non-operated MMD patients.

Computed tomography angiography (CTA) immediately after diagnosis of intracerebral hematoma (ICH) on noncontrast CT in the emergency room has benefits, which consist of early diagnosis of secondary ICH and prediction of hematoma growth using the spot sign in primary ICH, but CTA also involves possible risks of acute kidney injury (AKI) and adverse reactions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the benefits and risks of CTA. A total of 1423 consecutive adult patients diagnosed with ICH who were admitted within 3 days of onset between 2010 and 2017 were retrospectively analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • * A systematic review and the modified Delphi method were used to create 29 QIs, and we found that measuring adherence to 6 of these QIs was feasible based on data from over 396,000 stroke patients.
  • * The study revealed significant variation in adherence rates among hospitals, indicating that the DPC database can efficiently collect data for evaluating stroke care quality at a lower cost.

Background: Nonvitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are considered superior, or at least noninferior, to warfarin in preventing stroke or systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Here, we recruited acute ischemic stroke patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation and at least one cerebral microbleed (CMB), and evaluated the proportion of patients who had an increased number of CMBs (%) after receiving anticoagulant therapy with NOACs or with warfarin for 12 months.

Methods: This was a multicenter, prospective, observational cohort study at 20 centers, conducted between 2015 and 2017, in which we recruited 85 patients with at least one CMB detected by 1.

Various cell-based therapeutic strategies have been investigated for vascular and tissue regeneration after ischemic stroke. We have developed a novel cell population, called regeneration-associated cells (RACs), by quality- and quantity-controlled culture of unfractionated mononuclear cells. RACs were trans-arterially injected into 10-week-old syngeneic male mice at 1, 3, 5 or 7 days after permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) to determine the optimal timing for administration in terms of outcome at day 21.
