The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of early extubation and non-invasive mechanical ventilation in patients with severe respiratory failure due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), using an improved Glasgow coma scale (GCS) score of 15 as a critical trigger for transitioning care.
Conducted as a prospective control study, 20 COPD patients who underwent intubation were compared to a control group of 19 patients who underwent standard weaning protocol, measuring various outcomes such as invasive ventilation duration and incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP).
Results showed that patients in the treatment group had significantly shorter lengths of invasive ventilation, total mechanical ventilation time, and hospital stays, along with a lower rate of VAP, although
