Critical-size bone defects pose a formidable challenge in clinical treatment, prompting extensive research efforts to address this problem. In this study, an inorganic-organic multifunctional composite hydrogel denoted as PLG-g-TA/VEGF/Sr-BGNPs is developed, engineered for the synergistic management of bone defects. The composite hydrogel demonstrated the capacity for mineralization, hydroxyapatite formation, and gradual release of essential functional ions and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and also maintained an alkaline microenvironment.

Polypeptide-based injectable hydrogels have attracted the attention of biomedical researchers due to their unique biocompatibility and biodegradability, tunable residue chirality, and secondary conformation of polypeptide chains. In the present study, four types of poly(ethylene glycol)--poly(glutamic acid)s with different topological structures and residue chirality of polypeptide segments were developed, which were grafted with tyramine side groups for further cross-linking. The results demonstrated that the covalent conjugation between the tyramine groups in the presence of horseradish peroxidase and hydrogen peroxide could form porous hydrogels rapidly.

A field mesocosm experiment with Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) seedlings was conducted in Chenda State-Owned Forest Farm, Sanming, Fujian Province. The effects of soil warming (ambient +5 ℃) on specific respiration rates and nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) concentrations in fine roots were measured by the ingrowth core method, to reveal the belowground responses and the adaptability of Chinese fir to global warming. The results showed that soil warming caused significant changes of fine root NSC in the second year.

A precipitation exclusion experiment was set up in Cunninghamia lanceolata seedling plots in Chenda State-Owned Forest Farm, Sanming, Fujian Province, which included 50% precipi-tation reduction and ambient precipitation (control). In order to determine how the diameter class length distribution (DCLD) of fine roots of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) would be affected by soil warming, nitrogen addition and their interaction, a factorial experiment of soil warming (ambient, +5 ℃) and nitrogen addition (ambient, +4 and +8 g N·m·a) was carried out in the Chenda State-owned Forest Farm in Sanming, Fujian Province. Resveratrol possesses anti-tumor activities against central nervous system (CNS) tumors in vitro but has not yet been used clinically due to its low bioavailability, particularly in the CNS. This study thus aimed to elucidate brain bioavailability of trans-resveratrol by monitoring brain concentrations and dwell times following administration of resveratrol through intragastric, intraperitoneal, external carotid artery/ECA and intrathecal routes. Alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ) is a widely used wood preservative. This study evaluated leachate volume generation and contaminant leaching from ACQ-treated lumber during rainfall events in comparison to untreated lumber. This study developed a simple numerical model for nitrogen removal in biofilters, which was designed to enhance simultaneous nitritation and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox). It is the first attempt to simulate anammox together with two-step nitrification in natural treatment systems, which may have different kinetic parameters and temperature effects from conventional bioreactors. Prediction accuracy was improved by adjusting kinetic coefficients over the startup period of the biofilters.

Aim: To investigate the effects of American ginseng on neurocognitive function and glucose regulation in senescence-accelerated mice.

Methods: Male senescence-resistant inbred strains (SAMR1) and senescence-prone inbred strains (SAMP10) mice were divided into five groups and fed either a control diet or an American ginseng-supplemented diet (1% or 2% g/g) from 6 weeks to 10 months of age. Bodyweight, levels of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and grading scores were monitored every month and neurocognitive functions were evaluated at 9 months of age with a KUROBOX apparatus using a stress-free positive cue task.
