Article Synopsis
  • Primary aldosteronism is marked by high aldosterone and low renin levels, making diagnosis complex when severe hydronephrosis coexists, which can falsely affect test results.
  • A 54-year-old man with a history of hypertension and severe hypokalemia faced misdiagnosis of primary aldosteronism due to consistently negative aldosterone-to-renin ratio tests stemming from coinciding severe hydronephrosis.
  • After conducting additional tests, including a saline stress test and adrenal vein sampling, the patient underwent successful laparoscopic removal of an adrenal adenoma, leading to initial renal issues but eventual recovery of renal function and potassium levels.

Quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles (QUAVs) have attracted significant research focus due to their outstanding Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) capabilities. This research addresses the challenge of maintaining precise trajectory tracking in QUAV systems when faced with external disturbances by introducing a robust, two-tier control system based on sliding mode technology. For position control, this approach utilizes a virtual sliding mode control signal to enhance tracking precision and includes adaptive mechanisms to adjust for changes in mass and external disruptions.

The temporal component of episodic memory has been recognized as a sensitive behavioral marker in early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. However, parallel studies in AD animals are currently lacking, and the underlying neural circuit mechanisms remain poorly understood. Using a novel App knock-in (APP-KI) rat model, the developmental changes of temporal order memory (TOM) and the relationship with medial prefrontal cortex and perirhinal cortex (mPFC-PRH) circuit were determined through in vivo electrophysiology and microimaging technique.

Fringe projection profilometry plays an important role for quality control in production line. However, it is facing challenges in the measurement of objects with intricate structures and high dynamic range that involved in precision manufacturing and semiconductor packaging. In this paper, a multi-view fringe projection profilometry system, which deploys a vertical telecentric projector and four oblique tilt-shift cameras, is presented to address the "blind spots" caused by shadowing, occlusion and local specular reflection.

Background: Adolescence is a period characterized by a high vulnerability to emotional disorders, which are modulated by biological, psychological, and social factors. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood.

Methods: Combining physical or emotional social defeat stress (PS and ES) and pair or isolation rearing conditions, we investigated the effects of stress type and social support on emotional behavior and central immune molecules in adolescent mice, including anxiety, social fear, and social interaction strategies, as well as changes in microglia-specific molecules (ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule 1 (Iba1) and a cluster of differentiation molecule 11b (CD11b)) in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), hippocampus (HIP), amygdala (AMY), and nucleus accumbens (NAc).

Manipulation of directional magnon propagation, known as magnon spin current, is essential for developing magnonic devices featuring nonvolatile functionalities and ultralow power consumption. Magnon spin current can usually be modulated by magnetic field or current-induced spin torques. However, these approaches may lead to energy dissipation due to Joule heating.

Two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures integrated into nanophotonic cavities have emerged as a promising approach towards novel photonic and opto-electronic devices. However, the thickness of the 2D heterostructure has a strong influence on the resonance frequency of the nanocavity. For a single cavity, the resonance frequency shifts approximately linearly with the thickness.

Flexible photodetectors are fundamental components for developing wearable systems, which can be widely used for medical detection, environmental monitoring and flexible imaging. However, compared with 3D materials, low-dimensional materials have degraded performance, a key challenge for current flexible photodetectors. Here, a high-performance broadband photodetector has been proposed and fabricated.

3D imaging and metrology of complex micro-structures is a critical task for precision manufacturing and inspection. In this paper, an accurate and flexible calibration method for 3D microscopic structured light system with telecentric imaging and Scheimpflug projector is proposed. Firstly, a fringe projection 3D microscopy (FP-3DM) system consisting of a telecentric camera and a Scheimpflug projector is developed, which can take full advantage of the depth of field (DOF) and increase the measurement depth range.

The liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) of layered black phosphorus (BP) material is essential in the field of electronics. -Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is one of the most promising precursors for obtaining BP nanosheets/nanoparticles, but the longer sonication time leads to smaller production of phosphorene. Herein, for the first time, the large lateral size fabrication of phosphorene was attained through NMP solvent by optimizing the process parameters.

The measurement accuracy of telecentric imaging technique straightforwardly depends on the calibration of the telecentric camera. We present a flexible and simple calibration method based on a telecentric imaging model and orthogonality of rotation matrix. First, we use the orthogonality of rotation matrix to solve the magnification.

Various micro-structure surface texturing methods have been used to produce optical functional surface in the grinding, such as the textured grinding wheel, wheel path control and off-spindle-axis grinding. However, those grinding technologies are inherently challenged to employ in large-scale surface grinding due to the extremely high requirement for wheel cutting profile dressing. In this study, a novel phase shift modulation based on wheel oscillation motion was proposed to generate the micro-structure array in ultra-precision grinding.

Merchants used frozen chicken to pass it off as chilled chicken, resulting in Economically Motivated Adulteration incidents. Here in this work, firstly, we established OPLS-DA and OPLS-R models based on metabolomics to obtain differential metabolites in chilled and frozen chicken (with different storage times), the PLS-DA model based on above differential compounds could achieve accuracy of 91% (training) and 100% (testing) for the adulteration identification of uncooked chilled and frozen chicken. Secondly, cooking study was carried out to identify the discrepancy of the cooked chilled and frozen chicken.

Natural antimicrobials (NAM) are promising candidates for the successful control of poultry-borne bacteria, carrying potent antimicrobial activity (AMA) against a wide range of multidrug-resistant pathogens. Individual activities of carvacrol, eugenol, trans-cinnamaldehyde, oregano, and thymol, along with the combined activity of paired compounds, were examined using broth microdilution and checkerboard techniques. The characteristic interactions between the compounds were calculated using an improved method, based on combination index (CI) values.

For the protection of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Sunite lamb, PGI Sunite lamb samples and lamb samples from two other banners in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region were distinguished by stable isotopes (δC, δN, δH, and δO) and two local modeling approaches. In terms of the main characteristics and predictive performance, local modeling was better than global modeling. The accuracies of five local models (LDA, RF, SVM, BPNN, and KNN) obtained by the Adaptive Kennard-Stone algorithm were 91.

Ultra-precision grinding is crucial for manufacturing high-end optics and molds, while the unbalanced wheel vibration is inevitable and becomes even more critical in surface generation, which resulted in undesired waviness and micro-texture on the ground surface. In this paper, to understand and control the micro-texture generation, a theoretical model has been developed to predict the deterministic surface micro-texture generation resulted from unbalanced tool vibration in ultra-precision grinding, in which the overlap trajectories of grinding wheel with an arc cutting edge were analyzed and calculated. The simulation work was performed and a double phase mechanism involved in deterministic textural pattern and structure has been revealed.

Graphene/silicon Schottky junctions have been proven efficient for photodetection, but the existing high dark current seriously restricts applications such as weak signal detection. In this paper, a thin layer of gadolinium iron garnet (GdFeO, GdIG) film is introduced to engineer the interface of a graphene/silicon Schottky photodetector. The novel structure shows a significant decrease in dark current by 54 times at a -2 V bias.
