CRISPR/Cas9 methods are a powerful approach to edit the genome of . To convert existing lines to driver lines in a secondary school classroom setting, we applied the CRISPR-based genetic approach to a collection of 'driver' lines. The integration of the coat color marker into homology-assisted CRISPR knock-in (HACK) enabled visual selection of -to- conversions using brightfield stereo-microscopy available in a broader set of standard classrooms.

Case Series of Three Patients with Disseminated Gonococcal Infection and Endocarditis.

Introduction: The increasing incidence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections and emergence of cephalosporin-resistant strains means the threat of disseminated gonococcal infection and endocarditis needs to be reimagined into the differential diagnosis for patients treated in the emergency department (ED) for sexually transmitted infections and for endocarditis itself. Only 70 cases of disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI) with endocarditis had been reported through 2014.1-4 In 2019, however, an outbreak of DGI with one case of endocarditis was reported.

Hepatic Abscess in a Returning Traveler with Crohn's Disease: Differentiating Amebic from Pyogenic Liver Abscess.

Liver abscess is a rare but serious complication of Crohn's disease. Patients with Crohn's disease are at risk for pyogenic liver abscesses due to immunosuppressive therapy, fistulous disease, and intraabdominal abscesses. Inflammatory bowel disease patients are also known to have a greater prevalence of amebiasis compared to the rest of the population; however, a higher incidence of amebic liver abscess has not been reported.

Prevalence of Curable Sexually Transmitted Infections in Pregnant Women in Low- and Middle-Income Countries From 2010 to 2015: A Systematic Review.

Background: Current literature comparing the prevalence rates of curable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in pregnant women in various global regions is limited. As a result, antenatal screening practices for curable STIs in pregnant women, specifically Treponema pallidum (syphilis), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) vary around the world, differing by country and particular STI.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review of publications on STI prevalence among pregnant women in 30 different low- and middle-income countries.

Collaborative centralized reminder/recall notification to increase immunization rates among young children: a comparative effectiveness trial.

Importance: Reminder/recall notifications used by primary care practices increase the rates of childhood immunizations, but fewer than 20% of primary care practitioners nationally deliver such reminders. A reminder/recall notification conducted centrally by health departments in collaboration with primary care practices may reduce practice burden, reach children without a primary care practitioner, and decrease the cost of reminders/recalls.

Objective: To assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of collaborative centralized (CC) vs practice-based (PB) reminder/recall approaches using the Colorado Immunization Information System (CIIS).

Evaluation of the UCLA department of medicine Malawi global health clinical elective: lessons from the first five years.

In 2008, the UCLA Department of Medicine established a three-week clinical elective in Malawi, Africa, for Medicine and Medicine/Pediatrics residents. We sought to determine whether the elective resulted in improved medical knowledge, alterations in career trajectory, and whether the opportunity for the elective influenced selection of UCLA for residency. A 29-question survey was distributed to all graduates of the elective from 2009-2013.

Phylogeny and biogeography of the freshwater crayfish Euastacus (Decapoda: Parastacidae) based on nuclear and mitochondrial DNA.

Euastacus crayfish are endemic to freshwater ecosystems of the eastern coast of Australia. While recent evolutionary studies have focused on a few of these species, here we provide a comprehensive phylogenetic estimate of relationships among the species within the genus. We sequenced three mitochondrial gene regions (COI, 16S, and 12S) and one nuclear region (28S) from 40 species of the genus Euastacus, as well as one undescribed species.

Surgical clips: a cause of late recurrent gallstones.

The formation of gallstones around surgical clips after cholecystectomy is a rare complication, with only seven reported cases in the English literature since its initial description in 1979. Three other cases report clip migration into the common bile duct and obstruction. We report a recent experience with "clip cholelithiasis.

Osteomyelitis of the pubic symphysis in athletes: a case report and literature review.

Groin pain is a common problem in athletes. Osteitis pubis, a chronic inflammatory condition involving the pubic symphysis, is a rare cause, and pyogenic osteomyelitis of the pubis is seen even more rarely in healthy athletes. We report one of four cases of pyogenic osteomyelitis of the pubis seen at our institution, review our experience with all four cases, and present a review of the literature (7 cases).

Colonic screening prior to renal transplantation and its impact on post-transplant colonic complications.

Colonic complications after renal transplantation are uncommon but have a high mortality rate. Some have recommended colonic screening in patients over 50 years of age prior to transplantation to lessen the impact of colonic diverticular disease. We report our 9-year experience of colonic screening for diverticular disease in potential recipients over the age of 50 and compare these results to the overall colonic complication rate in the same time period.

Bypass arthritis and the blind intestinal loop.

Arthritis and other inflammatory processes are well established complications of intestinal bypass operations, and recently have been reported after other gastrointestinal procedures. Bacterial overgrowth in blind intestinal loops, actual or functional, appears to be the underlying pathophysiologic mechanism responsible for these systemic inflammatory disorders. In the case we have reported, arthritis was the primary manifestation of blind loop remaining after incomplete reversal of a jejunoileal bypass.

The pill bottle desiccant. A cause of partial gastrointestinal obstruction.

Two cases of partial upper gastrointestinal obstruction were found to be due to a pill bottle desiccant. In both patients, an organic stricture was present. The cylindrical nonsoluble container of the desiccant had a very characteristic radiological appearance.

Results of jejunoileal bypass in two hundred patients with morbid obesity.

Two hundred massively obese patients were submitted to four variations of jejunoileal bypass during the last decade. The operative mortality rate was 2.5 per cent.

Morbid obesity: problems associated with operative management.

A review of the problems associated with extensive jejunoileal bypass for morbid obesity in a series of 175 carefully selected patients is presented. Five postoperative deaths occurred (3%). Nonfatal complications occurred in 21%, with wound infections (14 patients) being the most common.

Normal disposition of oxazepam in acute viral hepatitis and cirrhosis.

Oxazepam (Serax) is a tranquilizer-sedative of the benzodiazepine group that is predominantly metabolized to a pharmacologically inactive glucuronide and subsequently excreted by way of the kidneys. We administered this drug as a single oral dose to seven patients with acute viral hepatitis, to six with cirrhosis, and to age-matched control subjects. Elimination half-life (T1/2) and the apparent oral plasma clearance for the drug in patients with hepatitis and cirrhosis were comparable to values obtained in age-matched controls (P greater than 0.

Bacteremia with upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Fifty patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal fiberoptic endoscopy were studied prospectively for the development of bacteremia by aerobic and anerobic blood cultures obtained before, during, and at 5 and 30 minutes after the procedure. Forty-six patients were culture negative; four had positive cultures at 5 or 30 minutes after the procedure, or at both times. The level of bacteremia as estimated by pour plates was very low.
