Background And Aims: Visceral adipose tissue has been indicated closely connected with the severity of acute pancreatitis (AP). Visceral adiposity index (VAI) is a mathematical model that consists of waist circumference, body mass index, triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, which has been demonstrated to be a better indicator of visceral fat than other traditional indices. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between VAI and the severity of AP.

Background: The World Health Organization declared that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) constitutes an international public health emergency, which has strained health resources. In this study, we aimed to understand medical students' willingness to join the workforce fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic and identify factors associated with their decisions.

Methods: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study using the Wen-Juan-Xing platform and a pre-designed questionnaire from 23 March to 19 April 2021.

Purpose: This study analyzed the relation of energy and macronutrient intake at dinner versus breakfast with the risk of hyperhomocysteinemia (Hhcy).

Methods: Up to 12,474 adults, in which 1,387 with Hhcy, completed a questionnaire about energy and macronutrient intake in the National Health and Nutrition Examination. The differences (Δ) in that between dinner and breakfast (Δ = dinner - breakfast) were categorized into quartiles.

Background: The World Health Organization declared mpox an international public health emergency. Since January 1, 2022, China has been ranked among the top 10 countries most affected by the mpox outbreak globally. However, there is a lack of spatial epidemiological studies on mpox, which are crucial for accurately mapping the spatial distribution and clustering of the disease.

Objective: This study assesses the difference in professional attitudes among medical students, both before and after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and identifies the determinants closely associated with it, while providing precise and scientific evidence for implementing precision education on such professional attitudes.

Methods: A pre-post-like study was conducted among medical students in 31 provinces in mainland China, from March 23, to April 19, 2021.

Results: The proportion of medical students whose professional attitudes were disturbed after the COVID-19 pandemic, was significantly lower than before the COVID-19 pandemic ( = 15.

Article Synopsis
  • Developing an effective therapy to prevent colorectal cancer recurrence and metastasis is crucial for reducing patient mortality and morbidity.
  • A novel granular hydrogel, containing FDA-approved indocyanine green (ICG) for photothermal therapy (PTT), is designed to retain ICG at surgery sites and enhance its therapeutic effects.
  • The combined treatment shows promise by boosting immune responses, promoting the activation of T cells, and effectively eliminating postsurgery tumor remnants, indicating potential for broader clinical use in cancer treatment.

Introduction: Fear of progression (FoP) is associated with the quality of life and behavioral change in acute pancreatitis (AP) patients, but lack of assessment tools.

Aim: This study aimed to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Short Form in AP patients (AP-FoP-Q-SF).

Methods: Internal consistency, factorial structure, convergent validity, and criterion validity of AP-FoP-Q-SF were assessed.

Glyphosate is a widely used herbicide that has deleterious effects on animal reproduction. However, details regarding the systematic mechanisms of glyphosate-induced reproductive toxicity are limited. This study aimed to investigate the toxic effects of glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH) on reproduction in mice exposed to 0 (control group), 50 (low-dose group), 250 (middle-dose group), and 500 (high-dose group) mg/kg/day GBH for 30 days.

Article Synopsis
  • - Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) have been shown to cause liver toxicity in mice, leading to structural changes, inflammation, and mitochondrial damage after exposure to various doses over 30 days.
  • - The study revealed that GBH negatively impacted liver function and increased oxidative stress, affecting metabolic pathways related to gluconeogenesis and fatty acid synthesis.
  • - Researchers identified correlations between oxidative stress markers and specific gene expressions related to liver metabolism, offering new insights into how GBH leads to hepatotoxicity.

Aims And Objectives: To summarize the use of machine learning (ML) for hospital-acquired pressure injury (HAPI) prediction and to systematically assess the performance and construction process of ML models to provide references for establishing high-quality ML predictive models.

Background: As an adverse event, HAPI seriously affects patient prognosis and quality of life, and causes unnecessary medical investment. At present, the performance of various scales used to predict HAPIs is still unsatisfactory.

Background: We aimed to explore the association between long-term exposure to particulate matter ≤ 2.5 µm (PM) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components including fasting blood glucose (FBG), blood pressure, triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) and waist circumference among adults and elderly in south China.

Methods: We surveyed 6628 participants in the chronic disease and risk factors surveillance conducted in 14 districts of Guangdong province in 2015.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) induces tumour cell death by producing reactive oxygen species (ROS), and hypoxia is one of the main factors that limits its efficiency. In our previous study, bufalin (BU) enhanced photosensitizer mTHPC-mediated PDT therapy in colorectal cancer (CRC) cells, but its mechanism was not elucidated. To explore a strategy for improving the efficacy of PDT, we designed iRGD-modified nanoparticles to co-capsuled mTHPC and BU for simultaneous delivery to the tumour site and explored the underlying mechanism of the synergistic anti-CRC effect.

In this work, we designed and synthesized a novel series of quinazoline derivatives - and then evaluated their broad-spectrum antitumor activity against MGC-803, MCF-7, PC-9, A549, and H1975, respectively. Most of them demonstrated low micromolar cytotoxicity towards five tested cell lines. In particular, compound exhibited nanomolar level inhibitory activity against MGC-803 cells with an IC value of 0.

We hypothesized that exposure to polluting fuels for cooking was associated with abnormality of glucose metabolism and diabetes mellitus (DM) in south urban China. 3414 residents were surveyed in 14 urban areas of Guangdong Province in 2018. We recorded polluting fuels for cooking exposure, different DM status (DM, prediabetes), fasting blood glucose (FBG), oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), glycated hemoglobin (HbA ), and other covariates by using a structured questionnaire.

Article Synopsis
  • - We analyzed injury mortality trends in southern China during COVID-19, comparing data from January to June 2020 with the same months in 2019 in Guangdong province.
  • - Overall, all-cause injury deaths significantly dropped from 28.65 to 23.24 per 100,000, but notable increases in self-harm deaths (over 139%) were observed in the 10-14 age group and some rises in older age groups.
  • - The findings suggest lower mortality for most injury types during the pandemic, but highlight the need for targeted prevention measures, particularly for self-harm and other injuries in vulnerable populations.
