The collective dynamics of topological structures are of interest from both fundamental and applied perspectives. For example, studies of dynamical properties of magnetic vortices and skyrmions have not only deepened our understanding of many-body physics but also offered potential applications in data processing and storage. Topological structures constructed from electrical polarization, rather than electron spin, have recently been realized in ferroelectric superlattices, and these are promising for ultrafast electric-field control of topological orders.

Orthorhombic RMnO (R = rare-earth cation) compounds are type-II multiferroics induced by inversion-symmetry-breaking of spin order. They hold promise for magneto-electric devices. However, no spontaneous room-temperature ferroic property has been observed to date in orthorhombic RMnO.

We present a terahertz spectroscopic study of polar ferrimagnet FeZnMo_{3}O_{8}. Our main finding is a giant high-temperature optical diode effect, or nonreciprocal directional dichroism, where the transmitted light intensity in one direction is over 100 times lower than intensity transmitted in the opposite direction. The effect takes place in the paramagnetic phase with no long-range magnetic order in the crystal, which contrasts sharply with all existing reports of the terahertz optical diode effect in other magnetoelectric materials, where the long-range magnetic ordering is a necessary prerequisite.

Hierarchical porous carbon materials with high surface areas and a localized graphitic structure were simply prepared from sucrose using nano-ZnO as a hard template, activation agent and graphitization catalyst simultaneously, which exhibit an outstanding high-rate performance and can endure an ultrafast scan rate of 20 V s and ultrahigh current density of 1000 A g.
