Article Synopsis
  • Fluorescent carbon dots (hr-CDs) were developed from sustainable hydrogenated rosin, using a hydrothermal method, showing enhanced fluorescence and overcoming quenching issues.
  • The hr-CDs exhibit strong blue fluorescence due to the formation of J aggregates and are resistant to photobleaching, maintaining their fluorescence even in solid form.
  • These carbon dots can selectively detect Fe, have good biocompatibility, and are effective for cell nuclear staining, comparable to traditional dyes like DAPI.

A composite catalyst, Pd/C-SOH, has been prepared to depolymerize plant-derived polymeric proanthocyanidins (PPC). Different reaction conditions were explored and the catalyst was shown to have good performance and recyclability, as well as good thermal and acid-base stability. UV, FTIR and H NMR analyses showed that the depolymerization products (oligomeric proanthocyanidins, OPC) retained a condensed flavanol polyphenol structure and that the basic structural units of the polymers had not been destroyed.

Bioinspired by the morphology of osteoclast-resorbed bone surfaces, we prepared a calcium-doped titanium phosphate (Ca-TiP) coating, which consists of a nanofibrous network, on titanium (Ti) substrate via a simple two-step hydrothermal method, trying to mimic natural bone compositionally and microstructurally. The studies show that the Ca-TiP coating with synergistic features of nanofibrous biomimetic topography and surface chemistry could elicit intensively osteogenic behavior and responses including enhanced cell adhesion, spreading, and proliferation as well as alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and up-regulated expression of bone-related genes, which inevitably benefit the formation of new bone and the quality of osseointegration. When the two control groups are compared , the significantly improved new bone formation in the early stage and the much stronger interfacial bonding with the surrounding bone for Ca-TiP coating suggest that Ca-TiP coating modified Ti implants hold great potential for orthopedic and dental applications.

Spring maize sowing occurs during a period of low temperature (LT) in Northeast China, and the LT suppresses nitrogen (N) metabolism and photosynthesis, further reducing dry matter accumulation. Diethyl aminoethyl hexanoate (DA-6) improves N metabolism; hence, we studied the effects of DA-6 on maize seedlings under LT conditions. The shoot and root fresh weight and dry weight decreased by 17.

We propose a biomimetic strategy to construct engineered yeast cells (EYCs) by building intracellular silica nanoscaffolds as biomimetic organelles. These nanosilica-based organelles can coordinate with loaded drug and yeast as a shell could prevent drug leakage. In vivo results show that EYCs serve as a dually responsive drug delivery system, targeted with extracellular caps (folate) and triggered by intracellular SiO2 at the low pH of cancer tissue.

The aggregation of molecular metal oxides into larger superstructures can bridge the gap between molecular compounds and solid-state materials. Here, we report that functionalization of polyoxotungstates with organo-boron substituents leads to giant polyoxometalate-based nanocapsules with dimensions of up to 4 nm. A "lock and key" mechanism enables the site-specific anchoring of aromatic organo-boronic acids to metal-functionalized Dawson anions [M P W O ] (M=Ta or Nb ), resulting in unique nanocapsules containing up to twelve POM units.

Four new lanthanide(iii) coordination polymers (1-4) have been synthesized by using 2,5-dihydroxybenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate (Dhbdc, CHO ) as a ligand and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, TGA-DSC (Thermogravimetric Analysis-Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The isolated complexes include; [Ce(Dhbdc)(HO)Cl] (1) and [Ln(Dhbdc)(HO)] ·3(CHO)·HO [Ln = Eu (2), Gd (3) and Tb (4)]. The structural analysis reveals that compound 1 is a two-dimensional polymer in which the cerium atoms are coordinated by six oxygen and two bridging chloride ions adopting a dodecahedral geometry.

The molecular mechanisms governing the secretion of the non-coding genome are poorly understood. We show herein that cyclin D1, the regulatory subunit of the cyclin-dependent kinase that drives cell-cycle progression, governs the secretion and relative proportion of secreted non-coding RNA subtypes (miRNA, rRNA, tRNA, CDBox, scRNA, HAcaBox. scaRNA, piRNA) in human breast cancer.

In PAA-g-lignin, phase separation, caused by the difference in expansion properties between lignin and polyacrylic acid, is used to build a porous hydrogel. In this study, PAA-g-APL was produced by grafting polyacrylic acid with acid-pretreated alkali lignin. Acid-pretreated alkali lignin acts as a hierarchical pore-forming agent that enhances the simultaneous adsorption capacities for Pb, Cu and Cd ions from wastewater.

Ti-6Al-4V alloys with cellular structure fabricated by additive manufacturing are currently of significant interest because their modulus is comparable to bone and the cellular structure allows the cells to penetrate and exchange nutrients, promoting osseointegration. We describe here a unique simulation device that replaces the traditional steady electrochemistry approach, enabling in-situ study of variation of ion concentration and surface potential with pore depth for cellular structured Ti-6Al-4V alloys fabricated by electron beam melting (EBM) in phosphate buffered saline (PBS). This approach addresses the scientific gap on the electrochemical behavior of cellular structured titanium alloys.

The previous work of the authors indicated that the fluid-solid coupling effect of the magneto-rheological fluid and the brake disc is a necessary focus during braking process. In this study, a novel design of magneto-rheological fluid brake was proposed and studied theoretically and numerically, aiming to solve the prominent problem of heat dissipation, especially in the case of single emergency braking. First, based on the modified Bingham model, a parameter defined as the apparent equivalent viscosity was utilized to represent the relationship of magnetic field, flow field, and temperature field.

A Pd(ii) chloride complex supported by a Yamashita-Nozaki PBP pincer ligand, [C6H4-1,2-(NCH2PtBu2)2B]PdCl (1a), was synthesized. The structure, properties and catalytic activity of complex 1a were compared with those of the corresponding POCOP pincer complex [C6H3-2,6-(OPtBu2)2]PdCl (2a). It was found that the Pd centre in complex 1a is more electron rich and easier to be oxidized than that in complex 2a; complex 1a is a much better catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions than complex 2a.

Carbon dots (CDs) have been used for the first time as a sensitizer to initiate and activate free radical and controlled radical polymerization, respectively, based on an ATRP protocol with blue LEDs. Consideration of diverse heteroatom-doped CDs indicated that N-doped CDs could serve as an effective photocatalyst and photosensitizer in combination with LEDs emitting either at 405 nm or 470 nm. Free radical polymerization was initiated by combining the CDs with an iodonium or sulfonium salt in tri(propylene glycol) diacrylate.
