Cognitive decline is a critical hallmark of brain aging. Although aging is a natural process, there is significant heterogeneity in cognition levels among individuals; however, the underlying mechanisms remain uncertain. In our study, we classified aged male Sprague‒Dawley rats into aged cognition-unimpaired (AU) group and aged cognition-impaired (AI) group by using an attentional set-shifting task.

Misfolding and amyloid fibrillogenesis of proteins have close relationships with several neurodegenerative diseases. The present work investigates the inhibitive activities of ankaflavin (AK) and monascin (MS), two yellow pigments separated from -fermented rice, on hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) fibrillation. The results demonstrated that AK/MS suppressed HEWL fibrillation through interfering with the nucleation period and AK was more potent.

Objective: To explore the clinical value of echocardiography in detecting fetal cardiac axis abnormalities during middle pregnancy for diagnosing conus arteriosus malformation, and to compare and analyze the genetic diagnosis results, in order to provide evidence for clinical diagnosis and intervention.

Methods: Four hundred twenty-one fetuses with conus arteriosus malformation from January 2020 to October 2023 were included as the conus arteriosus malformation group, and 917 healthy fetuses (all single fetuses) matched at the same gestational age were selected as the healthy group.

Results: There was no significant difference in gestational weeks between two groups ( > 0.

Red yeast rice dietary supplements have been proven to ameliorate hyperglycemia, but the mechanism was unclear. In this work, ankaflavin (AK) and monascin (MS), as typical pigments derived from red yeast rice, were found to exert noteworthy inhibitory ability against α-glucosidase, with an IC of 126.5 ± 2.

An increased neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a poor prognostic biomarker in various types of cancer, because it reflects the inhibition of lymphocytes in the circulation and tumors. In urologic cancers, upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is known for its aggressive features and lack of T cell infiltration; however, the association between neutrophils and suppressed T lymphocytes in UTUC is largely unknown. In this study, we examined the relationship between UTUC-derived factors and tumor-associated neutrophils or T lymphocytes.

This study investigates the impact of organizational commitment and job engagement on service quality, while integrating the influences of organizational climate and emotional labor. Utilizing data from 427 participants, acquired via structured questionnaires, the research employed the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for analysis. The findings reveal that heightened job engagement and organizational commitment significantly enhance service quality, primarily through reinforcing employees' trust in their organization.

Ankaflavin (AK) is a typical yellow pigment extracted from -fermented rice with several biological effects; however, its solubility is poor. Thus, research studies of the delivery systems of AK, especially those constructed from protein-polysaccharide complexes, have attracted considerable attention. However, the interactions that exist in the system have rarely been investigated.

Extracellular matrix proteins appear to be necessary for the synaptic plasticity that underlies addiction memory. In the brain, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), especially matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), have been recently implicated in processes involving alcohol reward and memory. Here, we showed for the first time, the positive effects of MMP-9 on alcohol-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) behavior and hippocampal neuron plasticity in C57BL/6 mice.

Background And Aims: Obese children are more prone to becoming obese adults, and excess adiposity consequently increases the risk of many complications, such as metabolic syndromes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease, etc. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of multi-strain probiotics on the gut microbiota and weight control in obese children.

Methods: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was carried out on overweight and obese children.

Colonic polyps are a common cause of persistent bloody stools in pediatric patients. Such polyps are easily diagnosed by a barium study of the lower gastrointestinal tract or by colonoscopy. Polypectomies utilizing electric ligators are generally performed on pediatric patients, and such patients can be easily operated on.

Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is the most frequent congenital cardiac malformations. Amniotic fluid (AF) contains a higher abundance of biological compounds that could reflect fetal health information. The aims of our study were to construct a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network based on AF-derived exosomal ncRNAs.

Monascus yellow pigments (MYPs), as food colorants, are of great interest to the food industry, because of their beneficial biological activities. In this study, a comparative metabolomics strategy revealed the metabolic regulatory mechanism of MYP overproduction, comparing ammonium chloride with peptone as nitrogen sources. Metabolomics-based multivariate regression modeling showed that metabolic biomarkers/modules, such as glucose, lactate, and the pentose phosphate (PP) pathway, were closely associated with the biosynthesis of MYPs.

The increasing prevalence of obesity and comorbid conditions worldwide requires the development of effective strategies for both treatment and prevention. In recent years, bariatric surgery has emerged as the most effective weight-loss therapy for individuals affected by moderate and morbid obesity. Behavioral alterations in eating patterns and anatomical and physiological modifications to the gastrointestinal organs may result in significant deficiencies in protein and micronutrients such as iron, folate, Vitamin B12, and thiamin.

Monascin (MS) and ankaflavin (AK), as typical yellow lipid-soluble pigments identified from Monascus-fermented products, have been confirmed to possess diverse biological activities such as anti-oxidation, reversing diabetes, and anti-atherosclerosis, and have received increasing attention in recent years. Certainly Monascus-fermented product with a high content of MS/AK is also a concern. The current work explored interactions between MS/AK and human serum albumin (HSA) as well as their influence on the anti-oxidant properties of MS/AK.
