Unlabelled: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) isolates share a restricted cellular tropism. Marc-145 cells derived from African green monkey are one of the few cell lines supporting PRRSV propagation and are commonly used for PRRS vaccine development. However, currently prevalent PRRSV isolates display different Marc-145 cell tropism while the exact determinant is not clarified yet.

Three-dimensional (3D) tumor spheroids in vitro have great potential in drug discovery and tissue engineering due to their similarity to real tissues. Herein, we develop a simple strategy, with time and cost-effective, noninvasive characters to produce high-throughput 3D tissue spheroids using the magneto-Archimedes effect. This method is versatile in producing various morphologies of tumor spheroids by using different templates, as well as spatially coded tumor spheroids by adding different cells in the defined orders.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus 1 (PRRSV-1) was first detected in Chinese swine herds during an epidemiological investigation since 1994. Even though PRRSV-1 has been existed in China for 30 years, much less attention was paid on PRRSV-1 than PRRSV-2. This review systematically evaluated the emergence, prevalence and evolution of Chinese PRRSV-1 from 1994 to 2024.

In a crowded environment, macromolecules occupy a significant proportion volume of cells to repulse other molecules in HO-rich phase domains. These HO-rich phase domains have been found to significantly influence material transportation and biochemical reactions. However, the accurate quantification of the size of these domains remains a challenge.

Previous research has revealed that the insula, pallidum, thalamus, hippocampus, middle frontal gyrus, and supplementary motor area are activated during odor memory and that the performance of olfactory working memory is affected by the verbalization of odors. However, the neural mechanisms underlying olfactory working memory and the role of verbalization in olfactory working memory are not fully understood. Twenty-nine participants were enrolled in a study to complete olfactory and visual n-back tasks using high- and low-verbalizability stimuli while undergoing fMRI imaging.

Article Synopsis
  • Astringent seeds from Chinese fir are recognized as abortive seeds, with unclear causes, prompting a study on their potential to reduce aluminum ion toxicity.
  • The study treated seeds and seedlings with low and high concentrations of astringent seed water extracts under aluminum stress, finding that low concentration extract significantly improved seed germination and seedling growth.
  • Results showed a 36.95% increase in root elongation and reduced aluminum accumulation at root tips, while high concentrations failed to provide similar benefits, suggesting a potential environmental advantage for seeds in proximity to astringent seeds.

It is said that a wide range of renal functions are at risk from arsenic exposure. We examined how lactoferrin administration may mitigate inflammation, apoptosis, redox imbalance, and fibrosis in order to counteract arsenic-induced nephrotoxicity. Accordingly, male C57BL/6 mice (6 weeks) were divided into six experimental groups with six mice in each group.

The prevalence of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus 1 (PRRSV1) isolates has continued to increase in Chinese swine herds in recent years. However, no effective control strategy is available for PRRSV1 infection in China. In this study, we generated the first infectious cDNA clone (rHLJB1) of a Chinese PRRSV1 isolate and subsequently used it as a backbone to construct an ORF2-6 chimeric virus (ORF2-6-CON).

Introduction: A better understanding of xylem hydraulic characteristics in trees is critical to elucidate the mechanisms of forest decline and tree mortality from water deficit. As well as temperate forests and forests growing in arid regions, subtropical and tropical forests are also predicted to experience an increased frequency and intensity of climate change-induced drought in the near future.

Methods: In this study, 1-year-old seedlings (a typical subtropical species in southern China) were selected for a continuous controlled drought pot experiment of 45 days duration.

  • A randomized clinical trial in China evaluated the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes (ECs), nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), and varenicline in helping smokers quit, involving 1068 participants who smoked at least 10 cigarettes per day and were ready to stop.
  • The study found that 6-month abstinence rates were 15.7% for the EC group, 14.2% for the varenicline group, and 8.8% for the NRT group, indicating that ECs were more effective than NRT and comparable to varenicline.
  • Participants received minimal behavioral support and the main measure of success was verified sustained abstinence, where those lost to follow-up were counted as non-abstainers

Type IV pili (TFP) are known to be functionally related to cell motilities and natural transformation in many bacteria. However, the molecular and ecological functions of the TFP have rarely been reported for photosynthetic cyanobacteria. Here, by labeling pili in model cyanobacterium PCC 7942 (Syn7942), we have quantitatively characterized the TFP and its driven twitching motility in situ at the single-cell level.

Constructing a synthetic community system helps scientist understand the complex interactions among species in a community and its environment. Herein, a two-species community is constructed with species A (artificial cells encapsulating pH-responsive molecules and sucrose) and species B (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), which causes the environment to exhibit pH oscillation behaviour due to the generation and dissipation of CO. In addition, a three-species community is constructed with species A' (artificial cells containing sucrose and G6P), species B, and species C (artificial cells containing NAD and G6PDH).

Article Synopsis
  • Integrating zinc oxide nanoparticles into collagen can enhance antibacterial properties, but collagen's low zinc binding can interfere with effectiveness.
  • Researchers created a modified collagen-like protein, Zn-eCLP3, which binds zinc three times better than typical collagen, leading to improved performance in hydrogels.
  • Tests showed that the Zn-eCLP3 hydrogel not only exhibited superior antibacterial action but also promoted faster wound healing in animal models, suggesting its potential for wound repair applications.

Genetically encoded collagen-like protein-based hydrogels have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in promoting the healing process in diabetic patients. However, the current methods for preparing these hydrogels pose significant challenges due to harsh reaction conditions and the reliance on chemical crosslinkers. In this study, we present a genetically encoded approach that allows for the creation of protein hydrogels without the need for chemical additives.
