Heme oxygenase (HO)-1, a stress-inducible enzyme that converts heme into carbon monoxide (CO), iron and biliverdin, exerts important anti-inflammatory effects in activated macrophages. HO-1 expression is mainly governed by a mutual interplay between the transcriptional factor NRF2 and the nuclear repressor BTB and CNC homology 1 (BACH1), a heme sensor protein. In the current study we hypothesized that alterations in the levels of intracellular labile heme in macrophages stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a prototypical pro-inflammatory Toll-like receptor (TLR)4 agonist, are responsible for BACH1-dependent HO-1 expression.

Toxoplasmosis, caused by Toxoplasma gondii, is an important food borne zoonosis worldwide. Although goat meat constitutes an important dietary protein source, improperly cooked meat is a potential source of infection to humans. Data on prevalence of toxoplasma in goat is scanty from India.

Results from studies evaluating potential effects of prenatal exposure to radio-frequency electromagnetic fields from cell phones on birth outcomes have been inconsistent. Using data on 55,507 pregnant women and their children from Denmark (1996-2002), the Netherlands (2003-2004), Spain (2003-2008), and South Korea (2006-2011), we explored whether maternal cell-phone use was associated with pregnancy duration and fetal growth. On the basis of self-reported number of cell-phone calls per day, exposure was grouped as none, low (referent), intermediate, or high.

Development of a Telehealth Intervention to Improve Access to Live Donor Kidney Transplantation.

Background: Live donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) is underutilized by patients with end-stage kidney disease due to knowledge, communication, and logistical barriers.

Material And Methods: The Talking About Live Kidney Donation Social Worker Intervention (TALK-SWI) is a previously validated intervention demonstrated to improve patients' access to and pursuit of LDKT through in-person delivery of education and social support. To help overcome logistical barriers to LDKT, we adapted TALK-SWI into a telehealth intervention employing digital (ie, tablet, smartphone) and telephone technologies.

Small bowel and abdominal wall transplantation: A novel technique for synchronous revascularization.

Abdominal wall transplantation (AWT) was introduced in 1999 in the context of reconstruction of complex abdominal wall defects in conjunction with visceral organ transplantation. As of recently, 38 cases of total AWT have been performed worldwide, about half of which were performed in the United States. While AWT is technically feasible, one of the major challenges presenting to the reconstructive surgeon is time to revascularization of the donor abdominal wall (AW), given the immediate proximity of the visceral organ and AWT.

The National Surgical Quality Program (NSQIP) Transplant program was designed by transplant surgeons from the ground up to track posttransplant outcomes beyond basic recipient and graft survival. After an initial pilot phase, the program has expanded to 29 participating sites and enrolled more than 4300 recipient-donor pairs into the database, including 1444 completed liver transplant cases. In this analysis, surgical site infection (SSI), urinary tract infection (UTI), and unplanned reoperation/intervention after liver transplantation were evaluated.

Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the rate, predictors, and impact of complete pathologic response (cPR) to pretransplant locoregional therapy (LRT) in a large, multicenter cohort of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients undergoing liver transplantation (LT).

Background: LRT is used to mitigate waitlist dropout for patients with HCC awaiting LT. Degree of tumor necrosis found on explant has been associated with recurrence and overall survival, but has not been evaluated in a large, multicenter study.

First report of molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of Sarcocystis tenella from India.

Sarcocystis tenella is a common tissue coccidian parasite of sheep. It is reported worldwide with high prevalence rate ranging from 9 to 100%. However, there are very limited reports of this parasite from the Indian context and those reports are totally based on the morphology alone.

The Transplant Therapeutics Consortium (TTC) is a public-private partnership between the US Food and Drug Administration and the transplantation community including the transplantation societies and members of the biopharmaceutical industry. The TTC was formed to accelerate the process of developing new medical products for transplant patients. The initial goals of this collaboration are the following: (a) To define which aspects of the kidney transplant drug-development process have clear needs for improvement from an industry and regulatory perspective; (b) to define which of the unmet needs in the process could be positively impacted through the development of specific drug-development tools based on available data; and (c) to determine the most appropriate pathway to achieve regulatory acceptance of the proposed process-accelerating tools.

Validation of the Omni: A Novel, Multimodality, and Longitudinal Surgical Skills Assessment.

Objective: The breadth of technical skills included in general surgery training continues to expand. The current competency-based training model requires assessment tools to measure acquisition, learning, and mastery of technical skill longitudinally in a reliable and valid manner. This study describes a novel skills assessment tool, the Omni, which evaluates performance in a broad range of skills over time.

A Phase II Trial of Older Adults With Metastatic Breast Cancer Receiving nab-Paclitaxel: Melding the Fields of Geriatrics and Oncology.

Introduction: Phase II clinical trials including geriatric assessment (GA) measures are critical for improving the evidence base for older adults with cancer. We assessed the efficacy and tolerability of nab-paclitaxel in older adults with metastatic breast cancer (MBC).

Patients And Methods: Patients aged ≥ 65 years with MBC and ≤ 1 previous line of chemotherapy received 100 mg of nab-paclitaxel on days 1, 8, and 15 of a 28-day cycle.
