In this study, we evaluated the influences of graphene oxide (GO) on biofilm formation. Escherichia coli MG1655 and Bacillus subtilis 168 were used as models for Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The growth profiles and viability assays indicated that GO exhibited a high antibacterial activity, of which the negative effects on bacteria growth raised with the increasing GO concentration.

We quantitatively evaluated the effects of elevated O on arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) formation and on AM role in promoting plant growth in regard to several moderating variables (O levels, O exposure duration, plant types, AM fungi family, and additional stress) by means of meta-analysis of published data. The analysis consisted of 117 trials representing 20 peer-reviewed articles and 16 unpublished trials. Relative to non-mycorrhizal controls, AM inoculation did not significantly alter plant growth (shoot biomass, root biomass, total biomass and plant height) when O concentration was less than 80 ppb, but at concentrations above 80 ppb symbiosis was associated with increases of 68% in shoot biomass and 131% in root biomass.

Bioelectrochemical systems can effectively degrade antibiotics, but there is the need to better understand the fate of antibiotic resistance bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes during the bioelectrochemical degradation of antibiotics. In this study, a BES was developed as a platform to investigate the fate of chloramphenicol resistance bacteria (CRB) and the expression of chloramphenicol resistance genes (CRGs) under different operating conditions during chloramphenicol biodegradation. The results indicated that chloramphenicol was effectively removed and chloramphenicol removal efficiency could be improved under less chloramphenicol concentration and more negative cathode potential.

Photoluminescence (PL) from Si and SiGe is comprehensively modified by Au NPs under excitation without surface plasmon resonance. Moreover, the PL sensitively depends on the size of the Au NPs, the excitation power and the thickness of the Si layer between the Au NPs and SiGe. A model is proposed in terms of the electrostatic effects of Au NPs naturally charged by electron transfer through the nanoscale metal/semiconductor Schottky junction without an external bias or external injection of carriers.

High-quality Ge nanostructures are obtained by molecular beam epitaxy of Ge on Si(001) substrates at 200 °C and ex situ annealing at 400 °C. Their structural properties are comprehensively characterized by atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. It is disclosed that they are almost defect free except for some defects at the Ge/Si interface and in the subsequent Si capping layer.

In this study, we isolated and purified a polysaccharide (PTPA) from the tubers of Pinellia ternate. We aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of PTPA on human cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) cell lines and to identify the underlying molecular mechanism. PTPA at the dose from 25 to 200μg/mL showed significant inhibitory effect on the proliferation of four cancer cell lines (SNU-245, CL-6, Sk-ChA-1 and MZ-ChA-1), among which Sk-ChA-1 was a most sensitive cell line to PTPA treatment via induction of apoptosis.
