Background: This study evaluates the clinical effectiveness of employing direct retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) laser photocoagulation as a technique for achieving chorioretinal adhesion to effectively seal retinal breaks.

Methods: A total of 20 eyes from 20 patients were enrolled in the study; all selected eyes exhibited either rhegmatogenous or combined rhegmatogenous-tractional retinal detachment. During vitrectomy, direct RPE laser photocoagulation was executed, employing a power range of 100-150 mW and a duration of 120-200 ms, targeting the peripheries where the edges of each retinal break were anticipated to settle post-reattachment.

BACKGROUND Combined retinal and choroidal detachment (RD-CD) poses significant challenges in ophthalmic treatment, often requiring surgical intervention for optimal outcomes. The selection of the appropriate surgical procedure is crucial for ensuring visual restoration and overall eye health. This study delves into the therapeutic benefits and outcomes of two distinct surgical approaches for RD-CD: pneumatic retinopexy (PR) followed by pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and PPV alone, in an attempt to guide optimal clinical decision-making.

Article Synopsis
  • Long non-coding RNAs, specifically MALAT1, play a significant role in the development of age-related macular degeneration by influencing choroidal neovascularization (CNV).
  • The study utilized both in vivo (laser-induced mouse model) and in vitro (human choroidal vascular endothelial cells under hypoxia) methods to assess MALAT1's impact on CNV progression.
  • Results demonstrated that knocking down MALAT1 reduced CNV development and associated vascular issues, suggesting MALAT1, miR-17-5p, and VEGFA/ETS1 interactions could serve as potential therapeutic targets for CNV.

With the rapid development of the 5G power Internet of Things (IoT), new power systems have higher requirements for data transmission rates, latency, reliability, and energy efficiency. Specifically, the hybrid service of enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) has brought new challenges to the differentiated service of the 5G power IoT. To solve the above problems, this paper first constructs a power IoT model based on NOMA for the mixed service of URLLC and eMBB.

Geniposide (GEN) is a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory product and plays an important role in the treatment of diabetes and diabetic complications. To explore the biological functions and mechanism of GEN in diabetic retinopathy (DR), we constructed the in vitro and in vivo model of DR by using primary cultured mouse retinal Müller cells and C57BL/6 mice, respectively. We found that GEN inhibited ROS accumulation, NF-B activation, Müller cell activation, and inflammatory cytokine secretion both in vitro and in vivo, which is probably mediated through the Nrf2 pathway.

Choroidal neovascularization (CNV), a feature of neovasular age-related macular degeneration (AMD), acts as a leading cause of vision loss in the elderly. Shikonin (SHI), a natural bioactive compound extracted from Chinese herb radix arnebiae, exerts anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic roles and also acts as a potential pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) inhibitor in macrophages. The major immune cells macrophages infiltrate the CNV lesions, where the production of pro-angiognic cytokines from macrophage facilitates the development of CNV.

One type of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), neovascular (nAMD), characterized by choroidal neovascularization (CNV), accounts for the majority of the severe central vision impairment associated with AMD. Endothelial cells (ECs) in direct contact with retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells are more prone to the pathological angiogenesis involved in CNV. Herein, we investigated the effect of crosstalk between RPE cells and choroidal endothelial cells (CECs) via the ANXA1/FPR2/NLRP3 inflammasome/pyroptosis axis on the development of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in vitro and in vivo.

Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is characterized by choroidal neovascularization (CNV), leads to vision loss. M2 macrophages produce vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which aggravates CNV formation. The histone acetyltransferase p300 enhances the stability of spliced X-box binding protein 1 (XBP1s) and promotes the transcriptional activity of the XBP1s target gene homocysteine inducible endoplasmic reticulum protein with ubiquitin-like domain 1 (Herpud1).

Purpose: This study examined the role of the CSF1/CSF1Raxis in the crosstalk between choroidal vascular endothelial cells (CVECs) and macrophages during the formation of choroidal neovascularization (CNV).

Methods: Quantitative reverse transcriptase (QRT)-PCR, Western blot and ELISA measured the production and release of CSF1 from human choroidal vascular endothelial cells (HCVECs) under hypoxic conditions. Western blot detected CSF1 released from HCVECs under hypoxic conditions that activated the PI3K/AKT/FOXO1 axis in human macrophages via binding to CSF1R.

Wet age-related macular degeneration (wAMD), characterized by choroidal neovascularization (CNV), is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss among elderly people in developed nations. Subretinal fibrosis, mediated by epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells, leads to unsuccessful anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agent treatments in CNV patients. Under hypoxic conditions, hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) increases the stability and activation of p53, which activates microRNA-34a (miRNA-34a) transcription to promote fibrosis.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. A common and disabling disease of the elderly, the standard dopamine replacement therapies do not arrest the ongoing neurodegeneration, thus calling for new treatment strategies. The present study aimed to clarify the functional relevance of the hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α)/microRNA-128-3p (miR-128-3p) axis in hippocampal neurodegeneration in a PD mouse model obtained by intraperitoneal injection of MPTP.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss in the elderly and is attributed to choroidal neovascularization (CNV), which is a feature of wet AMD. The hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α)/vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)/VEGF receptor 2 (VEGFR2) pathway contributes to the pathogenesis of CNV. M1-type macrophages/microglia secrete interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), facilitating the development of CNV.
